Heartbroken. The lives of several aviators and two pieces of aviation history have been lost in the skies over Dallas today. The P-63 King Cobra collided with the B-17 Flying Fortress during the Wings Over Dallas airshow, destroying both planes. Neither aircrew survived.

After 11 years of spotting at KIAH, I now have a mishap under my belt in the form of an off-roading United 737 MAX 8.

In the history of the Boeing 767, over 1,100 airframes have been built and only seven have crashed. Of those seven, four were due to hijacking, one was due to mechanical failure, one was due to pilot error and one (today’s) is TBD. Very safe aircraft.

When the limits aren’t enforced, the results can be fatal. Happened to a 14-year-old football player at Icon Park a couple of years back. He was healthy but a very big guy. Tragically, he lost his life when he slipped from his seat restraint.

When I was in college, I passed a buddy and his girlfriend in the hallway of our dorm. He said “Sup”. I said “Sup”. We kept moving. His girlfriend dragged him back to me, thinking he’d been rude. I explained to her that that’s how simple guys are. She was completely bewildered 😂

It wasn’t a fatigue crack, but a damaged section of fuselage skin from a tail strike in 1980. The cracks weren’t repaired and were, instead, just covered with a doubler plate. They spread for 22 years and the plane fell apart at 35,000 feet in May 2002 (CI611). 225 fatalities.

My first 747 flight will be aboard D-ABYG! She's the 1,470th Queen ever built and one of nineteen 747-8s in Lufthansa's fleet.
She's the subject of some of my favorite 747-8 pics, as she departed off 15R at sunset on 06 January 2020. Absolutely beautiful!

Whoops … United MAX 8 ran off the runway at KIAH. Looks to be UA2477 from KMEM. Plane is intact but she’s well and truly stuck in a ditch with her nose in the air.

Bingo. I spent 2020 outdoors … exercising, getting vitamin D, fresh air, etc. Kept my immune system strong (much to the consternation of the Covidians) and, three years later, I still haven’t had Covid.

Worked at Target as a teen 20 years ago. Customers were just as goofy then as they are now 😂 So many TVs and futons we’re refunded and repurchased later when they returned with their friends’ trucks.

Gotta say ... the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS Mk II is worth every. Single. Penny. I never knew that “USAF” was painted on the horizontal stabilizer of the VC-25A.

... My four catches of the VC-25As at EFD over the years. Caught 82-8000 once in 2021, and 92-9000 twice in 2018 and once in 2024. They've been carrying Presidents 41, 43 and 46. Always a joy seeing these incredible pieces of aviation history!

Reminiscing about the UA 747s which visited Houston in 2016/2017. These were epic catches for us, as they were never scheduled from Intercontinental. As of today, only one of these airframes is relatively intact. The other three have been scrapped.
