(aka Helena Handbasket) Transgender teacher (ret'd.) She/her.
Transitioned in 1983 and kept my teaching job with Baltimore Schools.
Support trans kids.
Yesterday I posted that I was approaching 40 years on HRT. I was mistaken. I'm approaching 41 years on HRT. My first injection of estrogen was on July 2, 1980.
I got it from a sketchy doctor in Baltimore known to our "community," for being willing to inject us. 1/7
So basically, If you're a trans woman with a publicly-available photo, you're at risk of JK Rowling posting about & mocking you?
Just for being a trans woman?
That is so fucked up.
It was just last week that I passed three anniversaries.
43 years on estrogen,
38 years since surgery to affirm my gender,
and 40 years since I transitioned socially.
Yes, the first week of July was a big one for me.
Here I am, doctors. Do you want a specimen to examine? I know others who have been on HRT for many years. Where are the studies?
The next generation of trans women need this info.
Thanks for reading my rambling thoughts.
Love you all.
Teresa 7/7
That was me, in about 1986. By then, I'd transitioned and somehow managed to keep teaching in the Baltimore public schools. Long story. If I ever get my memoir published, I'll let you know. 2/7
Anyway, I'm over 40 years into this estrogen thing and doctors still have no idea what effect this regimen is having on me. A few studies have begun, but much more needs to be done. 6/7
I never looked back. It was the end of the Carter Era, the hostages were still in Iran, and hardly anybody gave a damn about helping trans folk. We were a punchline for late-night hosts to use in their monologues. It was easy to get a laugh with the phrase "sex-change." 3/7
We were rare and, like the Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster, sightings of us were hard to confirm. The Stonewall Riots were seen as a gay male thing, though we know otherwise. 5/7

@cloudyycharlie
Yep, Jonah, we go way back. I'm 40 years on estrogen.
Kept teaching in public schools after transitioning.
There's a lot of history hidden in our stories.
This should ruffle a few GC feathers.
I am transgender. After I transitioned, I continued TEACHING for another 29 years, through the Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush Jr., and Obama administrations.
I taught EVERY GRADE from PRE-KINDERGARTEN to community college!
No kids were harmed.
Welcome to all of you who recently followed me. It's wonderful to see you all.
This is me after 43 years on estrogen (and, of course, 43 years older as well).
No more glamour photos for me, but I'm very happy.
Have a glorious day, everyone!
I just spent most of an hour blocking folks who replied harshly to this photo.
Now, all I want to do is boost posts by other trans folk to cleanse myself from wading through all that filth.
You rock,
@ZoAndBehold
@ErinInTheMorn
!
I am so tired of seeing all the "dick, cock, balls, titty, etc." comments.
Really, if you have nothing new to add to this post, just like it and move on.
I knew I was trans when I was 6. If I'd told my parents about it, I'd have been institutionalized (1960).
My parents groomed me to be cis. It didn't work.
There is no such thing as a trans kid. The trans child is a pharmaceutically-constructed demographic of children who were told that they are living in the "wrong body."
Their parents are convinced that if they do not medicalize their child's perceived identity before adulthood,

As a white woman myself I'd like to say that whatever punishment this woman gets (and I hope the video leads to some sort of prosecution: assault, vandalism, battery?) she deserves it. If she gets off, it will just reinforce her privilege to her.
I invite all who think that the transphobic comments are abhorrent to block them freely, as I've been doing.
It's a good way to clean up your feed, and they're all right there, ripe for the blocking.
I honestly can't believe how many people thought I was really asking for an explanation and feel the need to drop their opinions here.
IT'S A JOKE, FOLKS!

Yes, it's correct. This was a regular joke in my trig class.

I guess I am. I look back at Christine Jorgensen, Jan Morris, and Renee Richards as pioneers, since they were public. I had to stay in stealth mode for decades to keep my job, but I did it.
@lampjaded
Thank you.
And we sure existed before I came along. I am thrilled that I got to see and hear Christine Jorgensen when she came and spoke at my college in the early 1970s.
@personal_amber
@QuinntoBean
That may have been my first school faculty photo as Ms. Palomar.
As to erasure, actually, nobody was trying to do so, because it was generally believed that we were scarcer than hen's teeth.
In 1980, general practitioners were not versed in trans medicine. Through a local trans group (yes, in 1980), I learned of a doctor who would inject you with estrogen and give you pills. I went, got my shot, and was given a 'scrip for, no kidding, birth control pills. 1/4
@jk_rowling
Oh, dear Jo. I have no interest in caricaturing you. I don't want to be anything like you.
And calling trans women "men" is indeed bullying, except in your bigoted corner of existence. You are on the wrong side of history, and it would be better if you just stopped all of this.
Ms. Jorgensen had her surgery in Denmark in 1952. She was indeed a medical miracle, but she was judged harshly for it. Still, she persevered, and, on a personal note, I was in the audience when she spoke at my college in 1973. What a wonderful speaker! She gave me hope.
There was a time when trans healthcare was viewed as a medical miracle.
Now, there's so much red tape that it's been rendered unrecognisable.
I see a future where trans healthcare is as straightforward as getting a mole checked out.
Accessible.
Non judgmental.

I've often said that the transgender agenda is threefold:
1. equal rights for trans people,
2. unconditional support for trans youth, and
3. pockets in women's clothing.
@SabrinaMorgens
@CatgirlFingies
I love this! You have nerve, kiddo. I had to stay in stealth mode and transfer to another school back then, or I'd have lost my career. Good for you!
Eventually, I learned from someone in my group to ask the doctor to change my scrip to Premarin instead.
Pre-Mar-In was concocted from PREgnant MARe urINe.
I still went to that same pharmacy. I wonder if they caught on.
Ah, transitioning in the 1980s. Such fun. 4/4
Right now, the harshest threat to transgender Americans is NOT in the military.
It's in the schools. It's on the athletic fields. Transgender youth are in the crosshairs of the conservatives in this country.
You say you have our back? I'll believe it when you protect our youth!
Having transitioned in 1983, I have a lot to be grateful for.
1) My wife,
2) the Trevor Project and PFLAG,
3) much greater trans visibility today, and
4) Phyllis Schlafly, Strom Thurmond, Ronald Reagan, and Jesse Helms are all dead.
Pharmacist takes the 'scrip, starts walking away, stops in his tracks, looks at me, looks back at the scrip, comes back to me and says, "This is usually prescribed for women."
"Yes, I know."
Pause.
"It'll be about 10 minutes."
"Thank you." 3/4
States with strong trans rights: WA, OR, CA, NV, CO, MN, IL, NY, NJ, VT, ME, MA, CT, MD and DC.
States with fairly good trans rights: NM, MI, VA, HI, DE, RI, and NH.
Avoid: ID, MT, WY, AZ, SD, NE, OK, TX, MO, AR, LA, TN, MS, AL, GA, SC, and WV.
@ZJemptv
What a load of crock. All of the trans women I've known have been the ones who have been victimized, emotionally, financially, and physically, by their spouses when they transitioned. ALL of them.
I am a retired teacher (Math, English, Social Studies, among others) (Every grade level from pre-K to community college), writer (seeking representation), artist, lesbian (despite what TERF's say).
So anyway, I turned 70 today. I am officially a septuagenarian. I didn't mind 50 at all. 60 was no big deal. But this one's hitting a little harder. Anyway, I'm just one day older than yesterday. . . .
@trans_mum
Your daughter knows.
I knew when I was six.
The year was 1960, and I couldn't tell my parents what I knew about myself.
Your daughter is so fortunate to have you as a mum.

This comment is the equivalent of saying "All Lives Matter." You are NOT the focus, here. This is NOT put here so you can draw attention to white feelings. Just go away.

So apparently Adele really loves being a woman and the right-wing media think we've all got our knickers in a twist because of it. Sheesh.
Good for Adele. She loves being a woman? Well, so do I. So there.
(Photo from 1980s, when I did the whole femme thing.)
@MavenOfMayhem
I transitioned 36 years ago and never looked back. I have had a wonderful career (teaching) and have many wonderful, supportive friends. Life is soooo good.
Biden is far from perfect, but Trump is dangerous. His egotistical world view is a threat to my life.
And I lived through the Gore/Bush debacle. No third-party candidate is worth the risk of the Orange One winning this time around.
Honestly, sweetie, I don't have to imagine it. I've been using women's bathrooms since the late 1970s with no problems. Still do. By the way, I use them to pee. What do you use them for?
I taught your children for decades!
I'm more human and compassionate that you'll ever be.
@KatyMontgomerie
Honestly I really don't think a lot of people realise how terrifying this all is for natal women
Imagine if the state made it so just anyone was legally allowed to use the women's toilet or changing rooms, and had no legal protections from AGFs accessing women's spaces
