I noticed several guys unfollowed me this weekend after I posted about baking and crocheting a blanket. I want you to know that doesn’t take anything away from being a scientist. I am an academic chemist full time and a woman full time.
Friends, I got my promotion letter today. Effective 8/16 I will be a Teaching Professor. It’s strange to be promoted to a rank that did not exist when I took this job, but so satisfying!

I may publish a million papers, but I will never make a better figure than the one my student Allen Moore made for this paper.
Link to the paper in the next post.
Just finished making a geode cake for the boy who is leaving for college. Did you know you can cut yourself with sharp sugar shards? Well, you can! Luckily it happened during cleanup, after the cake was done!
Happy birthday to me! Baked my own cake: vanilla bean filled with strawberry mouse and orange blossom buttercream.
At the risk of sounding like Kekule, I had a dream about this cake, then just had to make it happen. I think it says that chemistry is the foundation for all I do?
Here is my laptop policy (works for other tech too):
Please use whatever resources you need to be successful in this class. Let me know if I can help with anything.
To the man who dm’d me to let me know that he would unfollow me unless I made some changes:
GOOD RIDDANCE!
I now leave you with some pictures of the things you complained about: weird foods from other countries, dogs, cats, and crafty things. You’re welcome!
Tonight I surprised my son by pouring hot soup from a very large pot into a much smaller container without spilling a single drop. He didn't know that, as a chemist, I have this superpower.
You will see your instructor walk in the first day of your Fall course, but you won't see all the work that took place to get to that moment. Under the surface, we're paddling as fast as we can to make it look seamless above the water. Some of us are more graceful than others...
Way before Instagram and fancy engagement photo shoots you just went to Olan Mills during your lunch break and got your engagement picture made, then each one right back to their lab (we were in grad school)!
Well, that was an ordeal, but I was able to get my account and username back, and in time to celebrate my birthday!
Now, who wants cake? It’s a mimosa cake: orange cake with sparkling wine icing!
You would think that Ivy has never had anything to drink, she found this jar of water and almost drank it all. The sound is kind of soothing.
She is very serious about hydration!
My dad would like to announce that he’s making paella today. For a man who is 87 and not on social media he seems to have a good understanding of how to create a buzz...
Piecaken is ready! A pecan pie topped with a pumpkin pie topped with a spice cake topped with apple pie filling and covered in buttercream! Happy Thanksgiving!
If you are teaching organic chemistry, do you have any good resources to include Black chemists in your course materials? I'm putting together a list of resources and would love to hear from you.
We have a lot of work to do to balance all those reactions named after white men.
It’s my birthday and I made my own cake: Port-poached pear! Even better, I was able to take the day off, my husband did too, and my youngest doesn’t have school. Off to lunch!
You know what would be great? If instead of saying that you appreciate women in science some people would actually support women in science. Follow us, retweet us, cite us.

These are not replacements for traditional labs, but to be used by students unable to attend the lab (pregnant, military deployment) or unable to complete it safely (some disabilities).
In case you have questions about LatinX last names, some information:
In most Spanish-speaking countries people routinely use two last names. The first one is the father's last name, the second is the mother's last name. The two last names are always used in legal documents 1/n
We adopted another dog! Lady joined our family yesterday and we are all smitten. Sake is not so sure, and won’t be taking questions at this time.

Why is it generally accepted that foreign language class sections should be small (generally less than 40 students) but organic chemistry classes can be very large? Learning organic chemistry is literally like learning a second language, but with extra science components.
If you expect teaching faculty to publish scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) articles you need to allow them time to read articles, collect the data, analyze it, write, and follow up. Educational research is research. It takes time and resources.
11/92 I watched a coup on Venezuelan TV while I made a lasagna. That attempt lead to Hugo Chavez's dictatorship and the ruin of my country. His first coup was 2/92. Most people dismissed it.
Yesterday I watched a coup on American TV while I was making dinner. Don't dismiss it.
Last update of the day: thanks for all the prayers and good wishes, the surgery was very successful and we’re already home. Laparoscopic surgery is amazing!
Please join me in wishing my daughter Victoria (
@whateveniscouth
) a very happy birthday. She’s a bit under the weather today, so maybe you can help me brighten her day?
Vanilla cake with lemon buttercream icing.
It’s my turn! As part of

(organized by

We help others just by existing out in the open. I am a Latina who made all kinds of mistakes, yet was able to make a life for herself in academia. I did it while also raising a family and pursuing many other interests. I'm only saying this because if I did it, it's possible.
Many of the people that you consider successful are just really good at stringing their failures into a cohesive narrative.
Never underestimate the power of storytelling!
My dog Sophie is turning 15 so I made her a Quinceañera cake. Yes, that is a real tiara that I bought (on clearance) just for this cake. Happy birthday princess Sophie!

If you review a CV and see a meandering path, you might want to consider that people from disadvantaged backgrounds rarely get first pick on programs/offerings. Or don’t have the means to work for free at prestigious internships. We did what we had to do. Treat us with respect.
Chocolate with hazelnut filling and orange blossom buttercream cake for tonight. I had a dream about making a dainty cake with a huge flower on top to sit on this plate, and this is pretty close to what I envisioned

Son (10yr-old) has been freezing and unfreezing this water-filled ballon since yesterday. He just told me that he started doing it to see how water freezes but is now more interested in how the latex balloon is becoming less shiny and more brittle. Material scientist? Send help!
Well, I have kept a very happy front up until now, but today I am struggling. I miss my students, my office, my friends, and all things normal. I will throw myself a tiny pity party and I will keep on going.
