My spouse and I wear respirators at work (we purchase). We wear them in the community. We do this to prevent infections for others and us. Many look at us with discomfort. Many ask if we are infected.
Congratulations to Dr. Cindy Blackstock for the 2021 CPA humanitarian award for her work on the mental health of Indigenous children and families. Well deserved.
We are not infected and we want to stay that way. We also want our vulnerable patients to not be infected. This is not to be morally superior. This is simply that we care about each other and other people. It is that simple.
At the NeuroSpark Clinic, we use masks, ventilation, and air filtration to protect patients, staff, and others. This makes spaces accessible for all. Support your community members by not passing on illnesses.
We need politicians and public health officials to stop politicizing a virus and to start taking action. January will be year six of SARS-2. We have done nothing to change air filtration and ventilation regulations.
We as HCWs read and update our practice with scientific research. The research on both SARS-1 and SARS-2 has shown repeatedly that these viruses cause long-lasting damage to the brain and other organs, particularly with repeat infections.
I am a HCW, standing in from of public health and our government, asking them to provide people with up to date information and tools to prevent harm and to make changes to air filtration and ventilation policies.
@CMOH_NL
@PremierofNL
We have done nothing to improve the public’s understanding of vaccination as a method to reduce harm or masking as a key prevention tool. Public health stopped testing. Outbreaks in hospitals and LTC are hushed.
As someone not born in NL, it is hard to hear people talk negatively about newcomers. Newcomers to NL and Canada should be welcomed. Diversity should be celebrated. Why would NLs not want to learn about different ways of doing things and share traditions from here with others?
This is year 4 of COVID19. We are removing all protections in places where people are most vulnerable. This is ageism and ableism at its peak. This is a lack of concern for staffing numbers at a time we have no staff to spare. This is not a political issue. This is a safety issue
Professionals are not telling children and youth to lie to their parents. They are allowing children and youth the space and respect to determine when they are ready to tell people their information.
I am utterly disappointed that the first person the new minister of mental health and addictions mentions as someone to consult with is the leader of a group pushing for forced treatment.
The view that mental health and addictions treatment can be forced is not a new one. This is the view that had people put in institutions. This view does not support that people have the right to chose treatment or not.
I have significant concerns with the view that individuals with mental illness and/or addictions should not have the right to refuse treatment. People with these conditions have rights. Yes, we need mental health and addictions treatment with improved access.
@MDinWaiting
@Vancbromycin
The mental health of HCWs is something that health organizations need to think about. Decisions are often made by management without consultation and knowledge of daily tasks. HCWs have to pivot and adapt quickly to enact changes. They are not okay but they keep going.
The CPC have decided to prevent gender affirming care in Canada. Having politicians decide on medical care rather than individuals and their medical professionals leads to harm. Gender affirming care is life saving.
A number of people have reached about to me advocating for forced treatment. With their permission, I am going to clarify some concerns with this approach. I am going to focus on substance use but it applies for mental illness too.
People say everyone’s opinion should be respected. When someone’s opinion is that another person should not exist for any reason, this is no longer an opinion, it is hate and may fall under hate speech. If you use a position of power to suggest certain people
Sex education is important at all ages. It is important for younger children to know anatomical terms and about consent. This prevents sexual abuse as it teaches children about who is allowed to touch them and under what constraints (e.g., medical exam, etc.).
Mental illness is not the same as mental health. Everyone has mental health. Not everyone has mental illness.
To have a diagnosis of a mental illness, the symptoms significantly interfere with functioning in social, educational, occupational, and other domains.
If there is not accessible voluntary mental health and addiction services, then no one should be thinking about involuntary services. As a clinician, to see mistakes of the past reoccur due to political desires is frustrating and disheartening.
Another province in Canada has chosen to violate the charter of rights for people under the age of 16 by forcibly outing their gender to parents. Parents say they have a right to this information. They do not.
Hospitals need to be safe for patients and staff. If patients who are ill (this is why they are patients) contract COVID-19 at the hospital, they are at highest risk for negative outcomes. If staff are sick, they are not there to provide care.
TW. Thank-you Paddy Daly for pointing out that anyone can be sexually assaulted, regardless of size, clothing, gender, age, and other factors. The power of coaches and other authority figures (e.g. boss, police, teacher, etc.) is a major factor that is often minimized.
We have more and more evidence showing that a mild acute infection with SARS-CoV-2 (aka, COVID-19) increases your risk of having long-term neurological changes. We also have more evidence that the risk increases each time you get an infection. Vaccinations appear to lower risk.
Some people have reached out concerned that I am picking on the Minister of Health. Holding government officials accountable for their words and actions is not picking on them. Unlike the MOH’s statements that were disrespectful towards me,
Human rights are for all, not just those people you value. Human rights apply to everyone or they protect no one. People have always found ways to justify hurting or taking away rights from others. This is why we need to fight for human rights for all.
Today, our best boy Renzo has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. I thank Paradise Animal Hospital for allowing us and our other dogs to be with him until he passed. He was a sweet lovable boy who loved naps and adventures in the car. He will forever be in our hearts.
@mynlcorner
This is not ethical mental health care. Patients need to have follow up for medications. Someone who does not have a way to get prescriptions will still be discharged, ensuring that stable patients will no longer be stable.
@JonathanCOnP
It is hard to see more referrals for neuropsychological assessments due to SARS-CoV-2 exposures and Long COVID brain damage and then hear public health say it is mild.
I would love to see leaders start taking action to address concerns with housing. For example, could Housing NL purchase the old Target or old Costco to turn into housing? There is a grocery store, bank, Walmart, etc. and it is on a bus route.
I watched the HOA NL recording from today. I have a few initial thoughts. First, it is unacceptable that the standing committee on MHA has not been meeting regularly. This shows a lack of concern about the people with mental health concerns and their families.
📢RCMP NL is warning the public of the presence of Nitazene in the Province. This powerful opioid is highly toxic and lethal. Reports indicate that the tablets are being sold as Oxycontin. An image is attached.

People in NL deserve accountability and openness about the status of mental health services. We are told they are recruiting and giving a one time small retention bonus. We are not told the steps they are taking to keep psychologists and psychiatrists in public service.
With many holiday celebrations coming up, just a reminder to not force children to hug and kiss anyone. If they do not want to have contact with someone, respect that. This is how we teach children that it is okay to determine their own physical boundaries for their bodies.
Today is a good day to remember that all people deserve human rights, even those with whom you disagree. Politicians using or stating that they will use the notwithstanding clause to overturn the charter of rights should be of concern to everyone.
Young people can be reluctant to talk to parents about things for a lot of reasons. It can be simply that they do not think parents are “hip” enough to get it. It can be that they themselves are not sure of things yet. It can be that they do not want to disappoint a parent.
@xLiserx
HCWs need a break. It has been 2.5 very long years in healthcare. Cancelled or minimum vacation. Extra long hours. No coverage. HCWs are a valuable resource. We need them to be okay. All it would take is for people to wear a mask and socializing with COVID in mind.
@VOCMNEWS
Two thoughts. 1. It is not helpful to push the narrative that individuals who use substances do not deserve to live. 2. We need accessible mental health and addictions services.
Monkey pox is spread through direct contact and droplet. It is not an STI. It can be transmitted via sex just like many other conditions such as measles or the common cold because you are in contact with another person. Please do not stigmatize Monkeypox. It impacts everyone.
Healthcare is not buildings, it is people. People can and do provide healthcare in any kind of building. A building alone provides no healthcare. We need to invest in people.
@VOCMNEWS
The lack of psychological assessment and treatment options for children and youth and lack of supports for parents has led us here. It is not fair to teachers or students.
Patients deserve to obtain healthcare that is safe. If HCWs do not mask or clean the air, for many it is not safe. Currently, we have multiple airborne diseases: SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, measles, strep A, RSV….. Healthcare should be accessible and safe.
If you do not understand alcohol or other drug use, that is okay. If you judge people and think harm should come to them for drug and alcohol use, that is not okay.
@rlegrow
I really want us to start having honest conversations about how to improve the system. Patients are experts on what is not working and their needs. Clinicians know why they have left or want to leave. It is not a failure to say it is not meeting needs. It is a starting point.
A certain premier has stated that gender dysphoria is trendy. This is an incredibly uninformed and harmful position. I would expect that leaders would actually speak to experts about the issue before they simply espouse hate.
What would help mental health care in NL? Having access to qualified clinicians and services in a timely manner. Public mental health has not been prioritized in the past and continues to not be. We need to have a system created with providers and clients.
Really disappointed to see Conservatives in Canada looking to limited women’s access to healthcare despite the fact that doing so endangers their lives. Access to healthcare is essential.
Today is a day to remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. We continue to lose girls and women. They and their communities deserve justice. Today is a day of mourning. Please respect people’s need for space to mourn.
If someone is intoxicated or unconscious, they cannot consent to any sexual activity. This is an assault. Please do not share the video made on George street recently. Send it to the police. Please respect the young woman’s privacy.
MAID is not a replacement for healthcare and other social supports. We need govts to start seriously addressing issues facing individuals in their provinces and federally. We do not need another sound bite.
People recovering from strokes, cancer, surgery, etc. should not then be exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in hospital. The lack of infection prevention and control for airborne transmission in hospitals is negligence. Patients are not even warned when roommates test positive.
Leaders who stay silent about harm or who support the harm of vulnerable communities are not leaders. They are followers who have decided to use vulnerable people as stepping stones. Leaders step up for all people in a community not just those that are profitable.
Today is world mental health day. As a psychologist, today I struggled with the anger I feel that there are so many who cannot access mental health services.
@TomOsborneMHA
Mental Health care needs to be accessible.
Shout out to
@mynlcorner
and
@VOCMOpenline
for the talk about access to mental health support and mental illness. We need politicians to listen and respond, even when they do not score political points.
Recently a police service posted about a person who had stolen some groceries. They demeaned the person involved and felt justified in doing so. If someone has to steal basic necessities such as food, I think we need to look at how effective jail is in this situation.
A Canadian politician has started to talk about radical gender ideology. This is not a thing. This is something that politicians in the US created as something for people to fear. Gender is not something to fear. Consider why this issue has been brought up.
Early shout-out to
@mynlcorner
and other mental health advocates! We need accessible assessment and long-term treatment for mental health and addictions.
@JohnAbbottnl
This would be a great week to start putting those in place.
For people who may not realize, many homeless people have jobs, sometimes more than one. However, for many housing is still out of reach. This is a problem of affordable housing.
Respect means treatment providers meet people where they are at and not where the provider or others thinks they should be. It means humility that you do not know what is best for another person’s journey.
@PremierofNL
Premier, I really hope there is a plan to improve assessment and long-term mental health and addictions voluntary treatment as well as plans to address housing, social services, transportation, food access, and other predictors of well-being. The people of NL deserve action.
How do we encourage HCWs to take positions in NL? Respect scope of practice and specialties. Competitive pay. Respect clinician and staff input. Allow vacations. Put in an updated electronic medical record. Make the workplace safer with clean air, adequate staffing, etc.
It should not be controversial that parents do not own their children. Parents have responsibilities to their children and we as a society need to uphold children’s rights as per the charter of rights. Rights for all means children too.
@mynlcorner
@GovNL
196 weeks of asking government to care about long term mental health.
@JohnAbbottnl
Please listen to people with lived experience and clinicians. Start implementing meaningful changes. We do not need another app.
People are asking to violate the human rights of those with mental illness and in the LGBTQIA+ community in Canada. Human rights protect everyone. If you want human rights to be removed for one person, they are removed for all, including you.
Improving mental health and addictions treatments is essential health care. This means care for individuals with long term mental health and addiction concerns. Walk-in service is great for some things but it does not allow for the stable therapeutic relationships people need.
Any holiday season can be difficult for people for lots of different reasons. Finances, health, grief, mental health, employment, family issues, etc. Be mindful when asking people to engage in activities. A no is sufficient. No explanation is required. No offence should occur.
Right now, in private practice, my wait list is almost 18 months. This is because my assessment focused position in public healthcare was not filled and other similar positions are frequently vacant. This is the reality of public healthcare.
Today is the beginning of another week where mental health and addictions services need to be accessible. People are not able to access care when they require it. Our health minister is silent.
The NL mental health plan did not adequately address substance use treatment. Short stays or no in-patient treatment (depending on where you are) are not adequate. For successful reduction of use, we need harm reduction (e.g., safe supply, clean needles), access to long-term
I would love to see a greater commitment to putting more resources in place for mental health by the NL government rather than hear government officials say they are concerned about mental health.
Just a reminder that mental healthcare includes accessibility, housing, food, anti-racism, physical health, and other factors as well as access to qualified professionals.
is adequately resourced with knowledgeable professionals, and is held accountable.
Most of all, we need a system that recognizes and protects the human rights of patients. We need a system that listens to patients and that is worthy of their trust.

Manitoba stood up to hate with their decision to reject the hateful campaign that one political party chose to run. Now for the rest of Canada.
#nospaceforhate
#SearchTheLandfill
A provincial premier has come out in support of disclosing to parents if a child may wish to use different pronouns or go by a different name. Some people may think “yes, parents should know everything about their child.”
At the hospital, I am one of the only people masking. I am not willing to endanger my patients or employee by picking up something and bringing it back to the office. Imagine if the health authority thought like that.
Listening to the MOH yet again say that the public mental health system is comprehensive is angering. It is not. We know it is not. At some point, it would be nice if the MOH listened to people with lived experiences as experts.
@TomOsborneMHA
If people are put into housing that is unlivable and unsafe, then it is not housing. Where are the standards, even for basic cleanliness and hygiene? If Premier Furey would not stay the night, why do we expect vulnerable people to do so? Good enough is not good enough.
