This is the lesson that I’m worried will be lost in an AI world. It’s already so difficult to convince beginning artists that detailed rendering is a stylistic choice not a sign of quality. The underlying structure is always what makes an interesting image.
Cool, dude. Bdw here is an overpaint from the artist with ADHD debuff and low proficiency with dynamic compositions. But who has some basic knowledge of art rules, 2 hours of free time, pirated Photoshop, and the freedom to create art without restrictions of AI software.
There's actually a name for this, it's called "positive alacrity." It's about creating micro-experiences for others that emotionally uplift them and create a better environment and you should absolutely start doing it now.
I've had such a great time Art Directing the Fright Night skinline with our incredible skins team. What's been truly exciting is the unique perspective each artist has brought to the skins in this line. Trust me, this was a tough one to crack, and I'm so proud of the team!
@Rahll
I don't understand what any of these demonstrations prove. "If you produce a big budget blockbuster film you can use this AI to make it look like a bad imitation of claymation." Who is this technology for?
When I joined the League Skins team they showed us the concept art for Star Nemesis Fiddlesticks and I said our team better get to make this one! Fiddlesticks in the
#StarGuardians
universe was such a wild idea and I'm so proud of how the team executed it!
I wish the word “learning” had never been applied to A”I” art software because it’s misleading. What it does is catalog, not learn. Just because it can interpolate the data from a database doesn’t mean it learns. Anyone watching a child learn language can see the difference.
This is the skin line I’ve been most impatient to share as an art director because I think the team did an incredible job! The challenge of this skinline isn’t obvious, nailing the contrast between dark and neon on the rift, but they made it look effortless. RGB fans unite!
Driven by the burning power of the Foreglow and an endless need for revenge, Pyke hunts down other versions of himself across realms. After each kill, the realm collapses and a new Empyrean is born with volatile powers from the Foreglow and a mission all their own.
The best concept art isn’t about creating a beautiful image: it’s about expressing an idea. If you’ve expressed the idea you want and you keep painting you’re wasting time. Sometimes the best concept art might get ignored for beautiful but worse concept art on social media.
I work with the League splash team regularly, and we can generally tell from the thumbnail which splash is going to be a banger. If ever we accidentally try a thumb we aren’t excited about rendering NEVER saves it.
It was such an honor to meet
@DRXGlobal
after their historic win. Even that night they were incredibly humble and sincere. When they say positivity and friendship led them to victory, I believe them!
I'm proud of our team's work, I believe they captured DRX perfectly!
There is no version of Riot layoffs where amazing developers are unimpacted; that's the tragedy. If you're wondering why so many talented developers that made incredible things were laid off it's because that is the only kind of person at Riot.
I am the franchise creative lead for Soul Fighter and I’m so excited to share what our teams have made for you!
There is nothing like working with hundreds of Rioters and partners giving it their all: you’re going to love their work!
Allow these new winter skins to bless you!
There was a lot of passion this year trying to discover something special for the season and I love what the team came up with!
Winter comes to Runeterra! With the first snow of the year, Polaris must choose whether to bless or burden the realm. Will good deeds or greed win the day?
Hey folks, I was not impacted by the layoffs but a number of folks I care deeply for are no longer with the company. Please extend support their way and your understanding to everyone navigating this terrible news.
Minutes ago, we shared an important update with Rioters about the future of Riot Games. Here’s what these changes mean for our games and what players can expect from us going forward:
You've probably heard Silicon Valley's preferred AI buzzphrase a dozen or so times by now; OpenAI CTO Mira Murati used it when she caught flack for saying AI will kill jobs. So let's be clear: AI is not "democratizing creativity"—it's doing the opposite.
And you can tell our artists slap because when they produce something like the Soul Fighter splashes in an entirely different rendering style they still pop off. It’s because they know how to construct a great image in a way an AI might imitate but doesn’t understand.
And then finally, this paintover is much better but it’s still such a mid foundation. A pristine cathedral basketball court with a grumpy school girl chopping the head off a dinosaur that’s just there inexplicably? It’s Sharknado without the irony.
You may have seen Fright Night has hit PBE! Surprise! Looks like we made the in-game models match as closely as we could to the incredible concepts from our team. Please let us know what you think!

Can we please stop pretending “the image isn’t in the training data” now? Image Generators are huge compression engines and databases. They cover up what they are doing by lerping data, but the data is THERE.
Midjourney is back to the blatant plagiarism again. They really can't seem to fix it, it's almost like it's inherent to the tech...
"The people suing Midjourney are going to have a field day with this."
Thanks to
@NelkMarge
for this.
I think about this study all the time where Gen AI helped low-skill workers but had little effect on high-skill workers. How do you think those workers became high skilled? Lower-skilled workers aren’t getting better faster they are being robbed of skill building.
Just so we’re clear: this is an obvious indicator that there is no path forward for a profitable OpenAI. This is an admission there aren’t any current applications for GenAI that provide a sustainable return and Enterprise customers won’t want the stink of a porn platform.
We wanted Foreseen Yasuo to feel like an extension past the moment of the cinematic. His body may be aging, but we can see himself harnessing the wind into himself to fight once again with a renewed and perhaps greater strength.
We hope you enjoy Heavenscale! We wanted to bring out a feeling of divine elegance and auspicious opulence while leaning into Dragon energy to celebrate this very important year. 新年快乐!
Drawing isn't just about making beautiful art: it is the foundational ability to communicate visually. Don't let AI rob you of your ability to communicate; learning to draw is the equivalent of learning to speak and EVERYONE ought to do it.
It was an honor to work on Yasuold with
@faeriefountain
, the PIE dev team, and the season start cinematic team!
We hope you love this special exploration of Yasuo!
You won’t get a job because you want to do something, you’ll get a job because you’re already doing it: build a portfolio of work targeting the company you apply for that sends that message.
Interact with industry folks, be polite and casual, and know when to back off.
Hey folks! We've identified an issue with Janna's hair where the model of the hair extends past the joints that animate it. This is making the ends of her hair feel very stiff. We're working on a solution now!
@SuperSnkrdoodle
First Janna skin that I really really liked in a long time. Her VFX IS AMAZING! Also can I ask if you guys added the IJ Janna hair tech? It's looking stiff than the usual. Can't wait to see the splashes.
I feel like I’m losing my mind with the commentary on this: has no one turned on the sound? I don’t even think OP knows it has voice over or he probably would have scrubbed it.
Yesterday, a Chinese company released an alarmingly advanced text-to-video AI:
Minimax.
It's like a Hollywood studio in your pocket.
10 mind-bending examples (plus how to access it for free):
@GforGannon
This is honestly incredibly true and true for any lived experience. The only solution is more diverse teams: you can’t independently learn your way out of this problem.
For those at Riot and other companies that have survived layoffs and are wondering, “why not me?” It can both be true that you deserved to stay and the colleagues you admire didn’t deserve to go.
If you are shaking with anger because an employee doesn’t just “do what they’re told” when you make a request outside of the work agreement you neither deserve to be a manager nor a business owner. Control your emotions and learn how to lead.
"It's fair use! It doesn't compete in the market of the images it's trained on!"
This company: we saved $10 million off our stock image budget with one easy trick
It’s frustrating to find GenAI continually capable of nothing other than forgery. It’s not designed to be intelligent; it’s designed to mindlessly impersonate intelligence through probability. Being and appearing aren’t the same: this is the software equivalent of a conman.
We can't settle for mediocre artificial intelligence systems based on current ML models that are only rehashing what people have done and by themselves can't possibly do anything novel at all.
What sort of intelligence is that?
“Your honor, yes, we are leveraging copyright material without a license but if we tell you what material we’re using we’ll be held accountable for our actions and that would be bad so we shouldn’t have to!” Is such a bizarre admission of guilt phrased as a defense.
OpenAI CEO threatening to leave EU if they force companies to disclose copyrighted training material feels like a declaration of bancrupty.
If they are not able to operate without violating copyrights they might just not have a sound business model.
#ai
#chatgpt
#OpenAI
All these tech companies wasting money, shedding talent, and pursuing solutions without a problem are gonna lead us into the stupidest economic bust in history.
So not only do they need copyrighted material for their technology to function, but energy demands are getting so high (think small country), they also need a nuclear fusion breakthrough to sustain it. The whole thing is such a joke.
@survivor_343
It's like a person watching a comedian that says "I can do it too!" and goes on stage and bombs and blames the audience for being elitists that only laugh when "professional comedians" are on stage. It takes the humility of understanding it's not them, it's you.
Love seeing the excitement for the Wild Rift Soul Fighter skins! I helped provide supplementary art direction during the concept stage and then later general creative leadership for maintaining cohesion with the world. I love what the team built and I hope you enjoy it!
Concerning the ethics of AI “Art,”
I’m not a lawyer, but I consider trained AI software derivative works. The images generated are irrelevant when the tools are made from the copyright works of others. An artists brain isn’t created by influential works, AI, in part, is. Short 🧵
@TBSkyen
I don’t know if folks often realize that Pokemon is the most profitable media franchise in history and >75% of that is merchandising, not games.
As an Art Director my job involves little drawing and painting, so I've been spending more time drawing for fun instead of for work. That also means I get to draw however I want! I've been buying and drawing with all kinds of crazy pencils and having a blast.
There’s a story about Halo 2’s development where they worked late nights and lived at the office to then later cut much of what they had worked on. Games are made by teams, not heroes, go home and rest.
Really excited to share our Soul Fighter Art Blast with ArtStation Magazine! There's a short introduction in there from yours truly, hope you enjoy all the amazing art from our teams!
Years ago when I was doing concept art for Heroes of Newerth we were designing a Hero that slurped up its allies and rolled around the map. I quickly sketched this loose thumbnail that I apparently saved as “froggydoggy.jpg”
To be honest, my largest contribution was walking by
@faeriefountain
‘s desk and asking “have you considered meat grinder?” and “can we paint a mustache on Draven’s mask?”
@Nickola81334927
When my son was born we said “no online pictures.” Once generative AI became popularized we felt even stronger about our position and we were thankful we’d already made that decision.
@Coelasquid
@TBSkyen
Pencil drawings like this one in the Warcraft 2 manual made it seem possible to be an artist for video games. I started with loose leaf printer paper and no.2 pencils mimicking them and now I’m an Art Director. Core drawing skills are accessible to learn and remain crucial.
My son says his favorite animal is "Dragons" so I'm trying to find dragon video games we can play together but I'm realizing nearly every game with dragon in the title either has no dragons or very little.
I don't understand what any of these demonstrations prove. "If you produce a big budget blockbuster film you can use this AI to make it look like a bad imitation of claymation." Who is this technology for?
Before I was a skins AD I was the Head of Art Outsourcing and I interviewed nearly every new Art Outsource Manager at the company. This was not our process and lays out some specific things we actually avoid. If I was interviewing, culture fit wasn't up for discussion. 1/?
Great art stands on its own as an expression which is why it’s revealing that every time someone makes some kind of lame AI art there’s an accompanying novel of “why it’s great actually.” Art is about expression and explaining it like this is an admission of failing to do so.
This is what a complete lack of vision with competent execution looks like. No amount of improvement in technology will change this and no one serious would want to watch this movie.
People aren't taking the "everyone will be filmmakers" seriously enough.
I made this 20s trailer in 15mins with an OpenAI Sora clip, David Attenborough's voice on Eleven Labs, and sampling some nature music from Youtube on iMovie
The fabulous
@StellaChuuuuu
did such a brilliant job with her Soul Fighter cosplay and was so pleasant to meet as well. Thanks for doing our girl Gwen justice!
I feel like the wave of flat, “sympathetic” villains in media are due to some creators never having seen or experienced truly evil acts of real people. Evil as a hypothetical by folks not writing what they know. There really are people capable of terrible things without nuance.
As a kid I’d sit at the kitchen table copying the pencil sketches from Metzen and Samwise in the Warcraft II manual. It was the first time a job in video games felt possible and Blizzard was the pinnacle. This is gutting, my heart goes out to you all.
BREAKING: Microsoft is laying off 1,900 people in its gaming division, including Activision Blizzard, just three months after closing its $69 billion acquisition. Story coming shortly (first reported by The Verge)
@Rahll
I think the music industry realizes this is an existential threat that completely eradicates copyright protections while the film industry still thinks they can use and absorb the tech. But, record labels have always been more litigious.
Glad to share some final concept with early explorations I did for Soul Fighter Viego! We also put a lot hard work with Isolde as well. Hope y'all like them!!
