A no vote won’t change my life. Neither would a yes vote. And that’s the point. It’s not about MY life. It’s about their lives. That’s what it was about. And that is what is so disappointing.
After 12 years, 3 WC’s, 11 TdFs and countless amazing memories, it’s time to do something new. My time with SBS is finishing in September. Will miss the place and the amazing sport team. A special group.
16 years ago I directed a Matildas match featuring
@swalshy9
@Bubs_11
@joeypeters10
in an Olympic qualifier at Coffs Harbour against North Korea. There were 2125 in attendance and about 65k watching on SBS. To see where we are now is mind blowing.
Meanwhile a guy deemed “too divisive” for the top administrative position in the game, is at a prison in Thailand trying to get a registered Australian footballer released 🤷🏻♂️
Outside the Bangkok Remand Prison after meeting

He called on

I have some BBL thoughts. This may take a few. Firstly, I’m a big test match “traditional” cricket guy. I love nothing more than settling in front of a day of the test. I loved ODI’s in the 90s and World Cups are great. T20 when it arrived was eye opening and cool. (1)
Outstanding. The most appropriate of words for the moment of my career I am most proud of. An extraordinary effort from a remarkable group of people. We were not supposed to do this. And we did. ❤️⚽️
Amazed that every 4yrs we see the WC ratings and go “wow, why does the AL not get this?” The WC transcends everything. It’s like saying “1.5m million people watches the Olympic swimming. Why aren’t they watching the WC short course in Budapest?”
The point has been made elsewhere but it’s important. The decision is made for the cash so own that. The wriggling to make it seem like it’s for the fans benefit is disingenuous, and to be honest, a bit insulting.
I can’t fathom organisations that go top heavy with “talent” whilst making swingeing cuts at the storytellers, the do-ers, the people who make stuff happen, the unseen thousands. Top down will fail. Compelling content comes from the ground up.
Really really hard not to think that football fans are automatically treated differently....on the same weekend we see more punch ups at the G. This isn’t a code war, this is about the way authorities prejudice sporting crowds.
I also absolutely love to see the SBS building overlooking the Fed SQ scenes. It feels fitting. For all the work that was done before. For all the years when they were the only ones covering. For all the people that went before. For the World Cups at all hours. They were there.
There’s been a bit going on, so just wanted to add one thing about someone I’m hugely proud to work with. This is
@LucyZelic
Lucy is smart, funny, dedicated, passionate, respectful and knowledgeable. Be like Lucy.
Debates on whether we’ll get an extra 5% of newspaper coverage in summer are a waste of time. Winter, summer, Pay TV, streaming, it’s all fiddling around the edges and a waste of time. 2 sports dominate media here. And it isn’t ours. So stop thinking like that. Embrace the future
Listen. I go to everything. AFL, cricket, basketball, netball, League, Union. You name it. My kids play everything. I happen to think that’s healthy. Football is in my blood but my mind is open enough to enjoy other sport. And no one is telling me otherwise.
This is what is needed. Not a public holiday. This is where investment is warranted. At
@AvalonSoccer
we have over 450 female players. And no interior toilets or a female changing room. We don’t own our facility. We need councils and state and federal governments to care.
Every club has their idiot fans, and this Xhaka stuff shines a light on it. And we’re all a bit to blame by glorifying and amplifying stuff like Arsenal Fan TV which ultimately is a diatribe against a club, coach and players. We need to be better.
My final trip through the doors in Artarmon, 12 years after my first. Great place, great people, amazing memories. Will be a strange day but looking forward to the next chapter which starts with a trip to 🇯🇵 next week and then a new challenge with
@ESPNAusNZ
So I wrote a thing following my tweets the other night. I know how this goes. I'll get praise from one group and dogs abuse from another. So be it. I actually believe in a direction the game needs to go. Enjoy.
From the GF deal, Keep Up, to GA. A lot of what feels like Captains Calls from a couple of people no longer at the AL. A huge number of people impacted by disastrous outcomes that have eventuated. This was supposed to be the adults….the football people in charge. What happened?
Our main mens footy media - both Sherrin and Steeden - need to take a long hard look at the culture that has been created and cultivated. The games themselves have issues - significant at times - and the ones who are supposed to hold them to account are often a mirror image.
$900 for 3 days at the "Man City Football School" in Sydney. $995 for 5 days at the Barca Academy. $1155 for 5 days at the Madrid Academy. Glad the parents of Australia can support these clubs in tough times.
This is high stakes for the APL now. The game has already alienated much of NSL era fanbase and the constant desire for the “theatre-goers”to embrace the league has ground the gears of many on the journey. Now it’s put the HAL generation offside. So what’s left?
Here’s the thing. The biggest impediment to growth of football is not other codes, it’s not “lack of clean air”, it’s not bad pitches or no stadia. It’s the fact there is a chasm between the pro game and the rest. Move to winter starts the process of bridging that gap.
Stunned to hear the news about Paul Sherwen. A giant of broadcasting, hilariously funny and a fantastic guy who it was a pleasure to spend every 3 weeks in July with. As the great man himself would say “enjoying the tour?” With Paul we certainly did. RIP
Congrats to
@Craig_Foster
for his role as 2023 NSW Australian of the year. Beyond deserved for everything you have done for years across human rights and equality. Football administration’s loss, is the broader public’s gain. Love ya mate.
The Roger Ailes series on
@StanAustralia
is terrific and
@russellcrowe
is absolutely spectacular in it. Captures a range of moods and emotions. Top notch.
My daughter turns 16 soon She’s the one in the ears. We have learn to drive, HSC choices and formals ahead. Next to her is Hinata,
@mcintinhos
daughter. He is being denied the opportunities I have thanks to archaic laws and our own inability to stand up for him. Shameful.
Olyroos performance a case study for giving youth a chance domestically. Instead of recycling or throwing cash at high risk oseas/vet players, the last 12 months of challenges forced a change of strategy. Just maybe it's the right strategy.....
Dispiriting, but frankly not surprising to see the lack of traction from our community in supporting the plight of Scotty, literally behind bars in Tokyo. He is one of our own - football, a father, a friend, a journalist. And he needs our support.
I was sceptical of the KeepUp strategy at launch, and didn’t enjoy some of their methods (the bait and switch YT stuff during the WWC was gross), but a further contraction of an already diminished football presence here and more lost jobs is never good. APL need a hard reset.
Johnny Warren Medal winners the last decade. All wonderful players. All have lit up the domestic competition. But whenever we need creativity domestically, we purchase it overseas.
Rant coming....Junior (u7) football teams who are encouraging their biggest player to shoot and score from halfway in a game with no goalkeepers and celebrate each goal wildly is not doing either set of kids any good!!!
Same with this. It’s wonderful they are getting a statue. But this isn’t job done. Give that money to to a club that need equipment; a club that needs a coach; a club that needs to buy kit; a club that needs to pay for fields. Make every cent a tangible investment in the future.
The Matildas will be the first-ever women's sports statue outside Brisbane Stadium 🙌
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says her government will pay for the statue and work with Football Australia on the design.

Totally overwhelmed by the response today. Twitter can be a hard place but it’s also allowed me to know and communicate to a whole new bunch of people. Thank you.
Can we not laud any of these clubs for their U-turn? It’s not honourable. It’s a deserved capitulation in the face of what should have been obvious outrage. CFG or Roman are not saviours.
I may be a little granular here, but why are players who have lost 8-2 at home, signing autographs? And why are fans happily smiling and asking them? Where’s the fire? Where’s the passion?
One of our football family at
@AvalonSoccer
needs your support. A heartbreaking story as 9 year old GK Jensen fights a rare form of liver cancer. His team were missing him today. Let’s help him get back to them. Please share.

We probably should've told old mate it was a race, with a medal ceremony and flags, and photos and Aussie Aussie Aussie. The whole lot. We'd be drinking Pina coladas in the Bahamas by now if we'd done that.
Despite attempts to talk it down as a property, NRL’s digital arm is, from an eyeballs perspective, wildly successful. It’s a shrewd play by 9 to take a property that regular has bigger numbers than Its own out of the market.
Really tough call for the FFA/AL clubs now. Bow to the pressure and accept the demands and meander through the rest of this year and the next 3. Or back yourself and the sport and take a leap of faith. Either way the bulk of the money isn’t returning. Control your destiny.
Fabulous effort from the whole

This guy. World champion on the track. World champion on the road. Olympic medallist on the track and the road. Stage wins in all 3 Grand Tours. Worn all 3 GT leaders jerseys. World hour record. Remarkable career. In the Aus cycling pantheon. 👏
You’d walk past Damo’s house, and his budgies would be drying on the wing mirror of his van after a morning at the beach, his house doors wide open and he’d be in his armchair watching football. And he’d always shout out that Southampton would get the win this week.
And FFS support women in sports media, both in the mens game and the womens. Read, click, consume, support. It’s no coincidence 98% of the controversy, issues and frankly juvenile bullshit in sport is not committed by women.
A while ago but

This is a simple “lack of talent” issue. The talent we have is also poorly/under-utilised. And there’s a fear in the way they play against a good team. A paralysis. At least try to win the game, go down in a fight, if you’re not good enough so be it. But don’t die wondering.
CNN have been sensationally good. Overly cautious in some ways to call results, but deliberately so. Clear, concise and factual. Constantly reminding viewers that we have to wait. Superb.
@Gatty54
Keeping the game in Gosford is the best decision the APL have made since they took control. Hopefully the start of reconnecting with the actual fan base.
