So, uh...
THE POISONS WE DRINK is an INDIE BESTSELLER!!!!!
A big, big, BIG thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to all the indie booksellers and readers that showed love to this deceptively pink book about love potions, politics, and power. I appreciate y'all SO MUCH. 😭😭😭💗
The 21-year-old boyfriend of a Massachusetts teen has been arrested and charged with murdering her hours before she was set to graduate from middle school.
Folks are telling her to move on, but y'all not listening to her. She said she refuses to date another man because her young daughter can't talk. And that's flying over too many folk heads! She's saying she'd rather be alone to protect her daughter from child predators. WAKE UP!!
Pregnant woman just found out her boyfriend of 7yrs got into an accident on a secret vacation with her bestie.
She paid for the $6,000 vacation and he took the lover instead.
She found out because they got into a motorcycle accident on vacation and the family made a gofund.
My issue with enemies to lovers is that a lot of these stories are actually bully-victim or oppressor-oppressed. Enemies-to-lovers, to me, means that they have a balance of power. If there's a power imbalance, they aren't enemies. Some of yall love oppressors and bullies.
The problem with enemies-to-lovers in real life is that it’s much harder to redeem a real life enemy. I could root for an elf with a penchant for cruelty towards other elves but wdym I have to root for the guy who owns the big chain bookstore putting indies out of business?
cw: suicide
me being told by my suicidal white friends in hs that they went to a guidance counselor. she counseled them. gave snacks&hugs. i got taken to her and she called the cops to baker act me. i got escorted off campus & put in a cop car in front of my peers.
White people will never understand that them little “phases” they went through as kids were life altering experiences for us. Your phases turned into our triggers, our funerals, our incarceration, our need for therapy
i need british mutuals to tell me what's going over there!!! are the flags at half mast? is there a bbc blackout? is it true that bbc told everyone to be on standby for a royal announcement?
i don't think folks give davy jones + tia dalma the 💐 they deserve. he carved out his🫀for her & put it in a chest so he couldn't feel. he plays their melody on an organ bcuz it haunts him. he played his musical locket so much, it's out of tune. his heart BELONGS TO HER.
Wrong time, wrong list. No, we were exactly where we were supposed to be. I have PTSD, depression, & anxiety. I understand the wrong meds or dose can make your mind feel like it's snapping in half. Meds don't make you racist. Racism is in you. You hid it by lurking and plotting.
one's a grumpy chef & one's an cheery food critic that gives the restaurant its first neg rating ever, calling the meal "soulless." their well-meaning friends accidentally set them up on a mystery date. they both show up. insults & sparks fly.
call it: taking a whisk
The gov knows ByteDance won't sell and the CEO confirmed it won't be sold, making the ban easy to pass. However, the CEO hoping Americans have power to influence the gov, when we've been protesting for years about bodily rights, police brutality, & genocide is sad & funny.
Barnes & Noble is withholding initial support of debut hardcovers til they find evidence it's worth stocking in their stores. They'll be focusing on guaranteed sales from paperbacks. A middle finger to debut authors esp if they're midlist & marginalized. Get mad, y'all. 1/?
@LydiaMWrites
folks don't be thinking at all. they're calling her stupid and all types of names, but she's literally trying to protect her young kids who can't speak for themselves. like???? make it make sense. folks just be letting anybody around their kids. she said: no, not on my watch.
i ended up in a state mental hospital w/ no rights and abusive staff. when i got out, my friends admitted they didn't even know what the baker act was. the guidance counselor never spoke to them about it. this was the emo era where cutting/slitting/attempts were visible & common
Some of yall will be like "it's enemies to lovers" and he's the bloodthirsty general invading the kingdom with 900 troops. No, honey. He's a war criminal that's going to hell. She's a baker's assistant that burns croissants.
sometimes i wonder if some of yall even watched the video or read the comments in the op mentions because folks are telling her to find another man. there's different types of "moving on" and ya'll know which one i'm talking on. get it together. 🙄
so, they want to send Americans protesting Israel's war crimes against Palestinians to Gaza to be murdered by Israel as punishment? am i understanding that correctly?
sometimes i wonder how different my life would be if i had gotten counseled, snacks, and hugs that day. i dropped out of hs a few months later at 16 and got my GED
Though it's good to see Cait face the consequences of her own actions. There was plenty of time for a private apology to be issued before a public announcement. I've spent days defending my name & reputation while Cait had the privilege to hide. Dropping her doesn't absolve you
Cait and I will not be continuing our partnership moving forward. I deeply appreciate the patience of those directly impacted by last week's events as I worked through a difficult situation.
Published authors with full-time jobs, how did you balance writing and work? And if you say "write everyday," bring your squad because we duel at dawn.
A first-time author has been dropped by her U.S. publisher and her agent after readers and fellow authors accused her of posting fake negative reviews to a popular book recommendation website.
You know what gets me? White authors upset about CC's outcome because they worry their own racism might 'accidentally' slip free and run wild. Their laughable excuse card may get declined. It scares them they could face actual consequences instead of walking away scot-free.
it's been brought to my attention that the pub date has been moved to 2027. i hope all the -isms and -phobias cait's dealing with will be cured by then.
miracles do happen if you believe. 🤷🏿♀️
so, pro-Palestine bipoc authors can be punished by their publisher for refusing to support a genocide, meanwhile pro-genocide authors can continue on in living their best lives with no consequence in their publisher's protection.
BIPOC AUTHORS ALWAYS GET FUCKED OVER.
If BookTok is the most influential bookish platform, name three debut Black YA books published in 2022 that hit the NYT bestseller or indie bestseller list due to BookTok's "influence." I'll wait.
the fact that a white author chose to write Black characters using bacon grease bcuz she thought we talk about "hair grease," it HAD to be bacon grease because that's the only kind of grease SHE knows. and wrote it with her whole chest. sick behavior lmao
The article didn't list all the authors. Here is the list, that I'm aware of:
RM Virtue
KM Enright
Francis White
Kamilah Cole
Molly X Chang
Thea Guanzon
Bethany Baptiste

the fact that Israel, a foreign country, is actively able to "donate" money to American politicians and that's not considered foreign interference is so fascinating to me. 🙂
Once again we have a piece of media that believes Black trauma porn is Black horror. This is why Peele is a top dog. He knows how to blend Black horror & social commentary effortlessly. Twice Lena Waithe has proven she has no business screenwriting Black stories.
So, many layers to Cait Corrain's lies.
And yet when I told my truth in a 62-tweet thread, I was called a liar and accused of doubling down.
When I was ... just telling the truth and I refused to be bullied into not standing on the truth.
I love, love love folks in the QRTa saying "white woman solidarity" and "white on white crime." 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there's a nigga operating Susan Christina Sheffield's puppet strings. SURPRISE!
this was due to the collective work of bipoc authors.
without bipoc authors, this wouldn't have been possible.
w/o our receipts and emotional labor, this wouldn't be possible.
remember that.
WE won, bipoc community, WE won.
yall niggas betta not be feeling discouraged as a writer over these racists saying they can't connect with Black stories. yall gone let dem folk COLONIZE your confidence?! absolutely not. we rebuke that!!
So, they've written off Black fantasies because they can't CONNECT due to Black culture and that Black folks can have ... emotions. And yet point to Asian books as the most relatable type of BIPOC book bcuz they're...educational and Asian stories are...easier to empathize with?
I made a post about how in 2024 we need to support more Black Authors and Black Creators, instead of pushing the same story over and over again because publishing has the tendency to gatekeep.
And to say that Black authors need to be like Asian authors is willld.
So, often I see white writers say their MC is a POC because they want to help with publishing's lack of diversity problem. But what they fail to realize is a marginalized character doesn't make a book diverse, whether the creators behind it are DOES.
Back in my day, we used lemons and limes for stories w/ sex scenes. Lemon fics went full-on nasty. Lime fics were toned-down, non-explicit. I like these terms better than spicy. They were very understood throughout the realms. Spicy is too vague & based on personal preference.
I'll never, ever forget Cait begging publicly for money to pay dental bills and having her fandom/writing circles show up for her. A few months later, we found out she's a trust fund kid, which should explain nearly everything
the way cait corrain went rehab, not to better herself but to learn how to weaponize therapy speak to try and gaslight and manipulate her way back into the public's good graces is SENDING ME
Cait Corrain deciding to give an exclusive tell-all to the Daily Beast filled with excuses instead of giving those she targeted an actual apology is actually on brand. She spent all that money on rehab and walked away with "i'm not a racist. autism and meds had me at gunpoint."
Hello everyone. I’d like to make a statement about recent events. A former friend severely harmed many other people and systematically lied to me for years on end. 🧵
when nora said: i've never heard of you and your book before now, but now that i have, i will most definitely not be reading it.
i would've moved to the mountains and lived off the grid.
If you think the backlash on this author is bad just remember the last time a specious claim like this caught fire, NORA ROBERTS came down from Olympus to pen the world’s most scathing blog. I still get chills of fear.
Today is, by all means, a mercy in comparison.
You have the audacity to harass a BIPOC author and accuse them of copyright infringement and the evidence you provide to warrant said harassment and accusation is your bad writing?
Pick a struggle, honey. Bubble in one answer only with a No. 2 pencil.
If you've read this far, you see what I see, thank fuck.
If you don't, why don't you go be more fucking productive and ask Cait's agent and publisher to bring that bitch out of hiding to face the people she harmed! How about that?
Stay safe out there.✌🏿 62/62
Before you buy that popular regency romance for its beautiful Netflix cover, remember you're supporting a white author who said writing diversity is "tricky" bcuz it's hard to explain why her white rich characters are so nice to POC because it isn't "historically accurate."
CW: suicide, mental illness
In FL, we've got this thing called the Baker Act. Basically, if you're an endangerment to yourself due to a mental illness, the state can take away your rights and becomes your legal guardian. Due to childhood trauma, I was suicidal as a teen. 1/?
For yrs, Netflix's marketing strategy has been BINGING shows. That's why it releases entire seasons. And yet its reason for canceling shows w/ millions "view hours" is numbers dropped after the 1st week. Y'all want us to REWATCH the same season we just binged EVERY WEEK?
i'm tired of the "falling in love" queer shows. falling in love is the easy part. an established couple with a few years under their belt? i want that kinda rep. we need to see what adult queer relationships look like after the honeymoon stage is over.
naw, keep that "she was mentally unwell" and "trad pub pushed her to this" off my tl. i have mental illnesses. i'm stressed. i wrote a book about BLACKITY BLACK WITCHES BURNING COPS AT THE STAKE AND POISIONING POLITICIANS WITH LOVE POISONS. a book being released ELECTION YEAR.
I'd love to know what S&S intends to do w/ a male author approaching young girls in the guise of book promotion, asking them to take nude photos with his upcoming book and tell him about their sex life.
I highly doubt this was included in his marketing plan from S&S.
folks say they're ready for angry Black girls and feminine rage, but they're not. ive been told far too many times i went too far with this book.
tbh, after the exp ive had with THE POISONS WE DRINK, im not sure if i even want to write more angry Black morally gray girls.
one day younger authors will speak of december 2023 and i'll finally get to say:
do not cite the deep magic to me, witch. i was there when it was written.
driving through the Appalachian mountains and admiring the view and my dude says “you know about the mountains, right?” and I say “you mean how they’re older than dinosaurs?” and he says “about how they’re the same mountains as the Scottish highlands” and I can’t stop screaming
i like how there's articles about this situation and half of the articles is about me being accused of ableism. and less about cait corrain's foolery.
this sets me up to look like an ableist.
i told yall a Black expression would be weaponized against me. 🤷🏿♀️
after receiving more horrible news from my publisher today, i've reached my breaking point. i don't give a fuck anymore. i'm going to be 100% honest like i've always been:
from 2021 to now, this has been the worst publishing experience of my life.
ANYONE can have endometriosis. i've had it since 12yo. the medical field disregard folks w/ endometriosis. we're told to deal w/ the pain or are suggested EXTREME procedures when there's other options.
at 15yo, my gyno recommended to my mom that i should get a HYSTERECTOMY.
The way white authors are threatened by BIPOC authors because they think we have an "advantage" when historically and presently across the board, they will always have a reserved seat at the table we're not allowed to sit at. We don't get to sit. We stand w/ a time limit.
is december national racist writer month? are racist white writers charging up in prep for the winter solstice? what's happening here?
yall way too comfortable out here like we don't know your name
Trad pub ALREADY don't give midlist and marginalized authors the marketing support needed to thrive and survive. If B&N withholds their support to stock debut titles in-store until they receive some sign a book is "worthy," 2/?
We’re aware of the conversations around the author of our May 2024 book, Cait Corrain.
We can confirm that Crown of Starlight will no longer be featured in the May 2024 Illumicrate Box.
@Ikarus_veiled
Rivals means competition, equals. Enemies, to me, means violence and power. Which is why I explicitly picked oppressor-oppressed and bully-victim. These are often mistaken for enemies to lovers. But one side does all the harm and the other can't fight back due to power imbalance
honestly, i'll admit i got a little misty-eyed when i found out a few minutes ago that POISON ended up on EW's 2024 anticipated reads list.
it's nice, for once this month, to be in an article for a ✨️good✨️ reason and not due to a bad one.
southern Black authors have been trying to break into the southern gothic genre, but consistently are told: can't connect, don't like the voice, etc. and yet white authors who aren't even southerners get to play on the aesthetics & skirt around what makes southern gothic southern
All the recs people are offering are by white authors. I can't wait for when we have mainstream gothic stories by authors of color. I want to see women of color loved the way gothic white women are.
i blame the rich white girlies on tiktok cosplaying as budget, penny-pinching bunnies. dollar tree keeps opening up fully staffed, fully stocked, clean stores in higher income areas while the lower income areas like mine are understaffed, barely stocked, and in need of support.
Publishing needs to re-examine its call for diversity. The authors and stories are there, but the mindset & system is still the same. You can't pledge to uplift diverse voices and still weigh the value of said voices on a scale of how they'll appeal to a white audience/market.
this will give trad pub MORE incentive to throw more money behind books they WANT to be considered worthy. And most of the time, the debut books trad pub uplifts are white or white-appealing ones. This is bad, bad, bad all around. 3/?
tell me why are ebooks 12.99? it requires no ink, paper, or transportation costs. all the publisher did was upload a file w/ some button clicks. are ebooks more expensive now bcuz their royalty rates are a generally higher % for authors and publishers want more off the top?
Hate that author brands are no longer just books but personality. That constant pressure to always be relatable likable presentable. Authors are burning out like fireflies bcuz everyone expects us to be influencers. No, baby. We broke. Books should be the influence.
I can't believe an ex-cop from Mississippi wrote a story where Black characters from present day go back in time to be enslaved people of the past.
I never expected this plot twist at all. We used to be a proper country.
btw, if you go to lauren's blog, you can read the first chapter of her book, including fun passages like this one where she sends her Black characters back in time and forces them into slavery
Sourcebooks and I have decided to part ways. As a result, the second book (a standalone; not in the POISONS universe) will not be moving forward. Honestly, I do not take this decision lightly. As a Black author, I'm full aware of how this could impact my career.
Have yall ever noticed how white creators love a good oppressor-oppressed romance arc & convince yall enemies-to-lovers? Ever noticed how oppressor characters get redeemable arcs & are cherished by stans? Ever notice how oppressors are given grace for atrocities? Have yall? 🙂
The thing about authors & revolution narratives isn’t that they actually support these narratives in real life (as evidenced by what’s happening now), it’s that they get to center themselves in these narratives and make themselves out to be heroes. It’s a power play, not activism
It bears repeating: The 1-starring, for me, was never the issue. Cait being a lurker on the 2024 debut slack as we share personal info while being messy was my issue from Day 1. That made the slack unsafe.
GR is for readers.
1-star reviews have a purpose & is y'alls business.
i got asked if there's romance in THE POISONS WE DRINK. yes, there is. venus is a bi girl & presley is an pan enby LI.
SO, if you like childhood friends ➡️distant strangers after disposing of a body ➡️"we're bad for each other but fuck it," this book ✨MIGHT✨ be for youuuu!
i can't get over this cover is a big fat BISEXUAL FLAG AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. YOU'VE GOT A MORALLY GRAY BISEXUAL BLACK TEEN WITCH THAT RUNS AN ILLEGAL LOVE POTION BREWING OPERATION AND THE SMOKE IS BISEXUAL TOO? AHHHHH
there's a big misconception that authors, esp bipoc authors, esp sff bipoc authors, get big, splashy advances. we don't. the smaller the advance, the less we have left after taxes & agent fees. i sold my two books for a small advance and i'll be writing Book 2 for 4K.
If I didn't have an unexpectedly successful YouTube channel, I would've had to get some other day job, bc I couldn't have lived off the ~14k USD advance I received for Iron Widow in 2020 and the ~4k in 2021. It's not "badmouthing" to be open about my book payments 3/?
they loved each other so much even though it went against both their natures. he betrayed her for not being there for him. he helped imprison her into human form just as loving her imprisoned him.
this is a true "lovers2enemies2fucking hate that i love you" couple. respect dem.
i don't know when maps stopped being functional and became decorative front matter for fantasy books but that shit needs to stop. like distance and timing mean things. if you show me a map, imma assume we going on an adventure which requires showing the ACTUAL journey.
Just to be clear: I'm not mad at the journalist. If you read the article, she uses punctuation, words and phrases in a way that let's the reader know she doesn't believe what Cait Corrain is saying.
no its not lost on me that cait corrain went to the same publication and was interviewed by the same journalist almost two months to the day since i and others did the same. during BHM no less. its a very fuckingly circular moment.
Sci-fi isn't dead. US publishing just doesn't know how to market it and is reluctant to throw support behind marginalized authors. I've told yall time and time again. Nothing is dead until marginalized authors have their turn with it. We'll show yall how it's done.
You started this back in April. You created more than 6 accounts. I believe you created over 10, if I'm not mistaken.
All psychotic breaks are different, but as someone who has had one myself, I simply could not function. I was inconsolable. The world was just too much.
i have an unpopular opinion that's gone make a lot of folk angry, but i think it really needs to be said. and i'm think i'm willing to argue about this about i feel very, very, very strongly about this.
Can yall imagine the ramifications of this in an industry that looks up to B&N like it's a deity? As the largest US book retailer, B&N already has influence on things such as book covers. This puts even MORE power into B&N's hands. Power that impacts a debut's sales & career. 4/?
