My issue with enemies to lovers is that a lot of these stories are actually bully-victim or oppressor-oppressed. Enemies-to-lovers, to me, means that they have a balance of power. If there's a power imbalance, they aren't enemies. Some of yall love oppressors and bullies.
The problem with enemies-to-lovers in real life is that it’s much harder to redeem a real life enemy. I could root for an elf with a penchant for cruelty towards other elves but wdym I have to root for the guy who owns the big chain bookstore putting indies out of business?

Back in my day, we used lemons and limes for stories w/ sex scenes. Lemon fics went full-on nasty. Lime fics were toned-down, non-explicit. I like these terms better than spicy. They were very understood throughout the realms. Spicy is too vague & based on personal preference.

there's a big misconception that authors, esp bipoc authors, esp sff bipoc authors, get big, splashy advances. we don't. the smaller the advance, the less we have left after taxes & agent fees. i sold my two books for a small advance and i'll be writing Book 2 for 4K.
If I didn't have an unexpectedly successful YouTube channel, I would've had to get some other day job, bc I couldn't have lived off the ~14k USD advance I received for Iron Widow in 2020 and the ~4k in 2021. It's not "badmouthing" to be open about my book payments 3/?

no its not lost on me that cait corrain went to the same publication and was interviewed by the same journalist almost two months to the day since i and others did the same. during BHM no less. its a very fuckingly circular moment.

Sci-fi isn't dead. US publishing just doesn't know how to market it and is reluctant to throw support behind marginalized authors. I've told yall time and time again. Nothing is dead until marginalized authors have their turn with it. We'll show yall how it's done.

we need to let times new roman go and start embracing other serif fonts for manuscript in the traditional publishing space. there, i said it.
i have an unpopular opinion that's gone make a lot of folk angry, but i think it really needs to be said. and i'm think i'm willing to argue about this about i feel very, very, very strongly about this.

Can yall imagine the ramifications of this in an industry that looks up to B&N like it's a deity? As the largest US book retailer, B&N already has influence on things such as book covers. This puts even MORE power into B&N's hands. Power that impacts a debut's sales & career. 4/?
