Correct. And that’s where most of life’s big outcomes happen, in decisions that seem unlikely but are for some reason still worth the shot. The inverse can happen too, for example m in surgeries. You may have a 1% chance of dying, but from the POV of the patient you still need to prepare for it, and the surgeon needs to expect it to mitigate it. The point the OP’s son is making is that to the individual, life happens in binaries, and choices therefore *may as well* be 50/50

The consequence is a binary one. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Therefore you take the shot. The conundrum is really the difference between successful people and the norm. The people who don’t understand this are the majority and are probably far more likely to be the norm.
