I'm David. Presenting tales from the attic archive. Trains of the 1980s in the North West. Bringing old photographs back to life. Hopefully someone might care!
𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝘌𝘓𝘌𝘊𝘛𝘙𝘐𝘊 𝘌𝘐𝘎𝘏𝘛𝘐𝘌𝘚
A series of photo-books covering the railways around Stockport from 1983-1991.
Free to download - This folder has the latest versions:
YORK: 254031
In 1980 we took a trip to York so that I could see an 'InterCity 125'. I'd received the Hornby train set for my birthday and was obsessed. I'm seven, and holding my pink OPC book. It's odd to think the HSTs are gone, and I'm now the old bloke behind the camera!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: A bit of everything
Mid afternoon, summer 1985. 304029 waits to go to Stoke or Stafford. Not sure what the 33 is still doing there. A Euston train on 5, Hazel Grove on 4, A Rose Hill or so, A 303 to Hadfield and a 31 over the Pennines. What a time it was!
LONDON EUSTON: 86259
I hung around for an hour after we arrived just listening to the loco. Not had the opportunity for a long time. After everyone had left I had a really long chat with Mr. Ross who showed me 259's bulkhead of fame and talked a lot about keeping the loco going.
LIVERPOOL LIME STREET: 47482
Literally the platform end at Lime Street sees 47482 waiting to depart with a Trans-Pennine service. This is most likely a Newcastle train. I would have taken it either to Piccadilly or Stalybridge. Summer 1987ish I think.
LIVERPOOL LIME STREET: 47482
(1/2) As well as looking forward to 2023, I wanted to look back at 2022 and say *Thank You* to everyone that has commented, liked, posted wonderful photos and anecdotes from times past and present and generally kept me going. I truly appreciated it!
STOCKPORT: 25190 & 43142
An appropriately chilly shot from Stockport. 25190 has been dumped in the slums, whilst 43142 on the up Plymouth makes a last, brave dash for the Riviera. February 1986 I think.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 82106
Brand new DVT stands in platform 1 for crew familiarisation in 1988. Nice to see this livery back in Manchester. Look forward to a run North next Friday with
@InterCity86101
. I had never noticed the Woodhead Tunnel plaque top left until scanning this.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47478
A typical 1985 Saturday lunchtime at Piccadilly. Platform 1 sees 47478 deputising for a 31/4 heading towards Sheffield. Platform 2 a 303 off to Hadfield and Platform 3 probably a Marple service or so.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: CLASS 105
The dawn of the Pacers is interrupted by the old order in the form of a 'Cravens' unit about the embark to Sheffield with a Hope Valley stopper in 1987. A shot included in vol 4 of 'Electric Eighties' which will be coming soon to a tweet near you!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: Arrivals
86405 and 254 showcase the rapid evolution of the Inter-City livery. The ultimate version was as 86405, but with bigger numbers. Spring of 1988 I think from the rest of the strip.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 33065
A warm looking afternoon in summer 1985 sees 33065 rumbling away whilst waiting time with the 13:45 Cardiff service. Interesting that there is an extra BG at the front of the formation.
LIVERPOOL LIME STREET: 47475
The unique provincial sector liveried 47475 awaits departure from Lime Street with a Newcastle service. I joined the train for a good run over to Piccadilly. Think this is 1989 - a grey rainy day for a bright livery!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86411
'Airey Neave' stands at the platform 9 blocks awaiting its next turn in 1986. A repost - I'm re processing a few scans to better correct the red colour fade in the Agfa film. I think this is an improvement, but the colours are perhaps a bit 'digital'!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: SATURDAY AFTERNOON
304029 waits to go to Stafford. The 33 is still there, although it should have gone south to Cardiff. A Euston on 5, Hazel Grove on 4, Rose Hill or so on 3, a 303 to Hadfield and 31443 over the Pennines to finish off. What a time it was!
MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 45124
On one of the last weekends before the end of the peaks on the Trans-Pennines 45124 has just arrived into Victoria with a Liverpool service. Despite the please to 'save me' 45124 didn't make it and was cut by MC metals in 1992. Fine locos the peaks.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 45106
45106 is somewhat unusual visitor to platform 8. IIRC in summer 1987(?) a SO Paignton trip ran often formed of a Pullman mk3 set. It was rumoured to be a 45/1 diagram, but one never turned up, until it did! Decent light as well, definitely an odd day!
POYNTON: 47/4
An early spring afternoon in 1990 sees a 47/4(463?) moving a Euston service south at pace past Midway, Poynton. Interestingly the set still has an NHA and no DVT, and by my reckoning can be no earlier than 1990. Anyway a nice record of a once ordinary Sunday scene!
MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 45049
Complete with Tinsley snail (which I have to say is an unfair characterisation) 45049 awaits the next duty in the centre roads at Victoria in 1987. This was what Victoria was all about. A look, feel and smell all of its own!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47503
On a balmy, sultry summer Sunday night 'The Geordie' attempts an inconspicuous getaway from a newly extended Platform 13 with a Newcastle service. Might be running a tad rich! Seemed appropriate to post on an equally balmy night! July 91 (I think).
EXETER ST DAVIDS: 50041
'Bulwark' runs round a Waterloo-Plymouth service at Exeter in spring 1989. I always liked 041 - she was the great survivor - probably should have been withdrawn following the Paddington accident, but somehow stayed with us.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47460
Beautiful illumination for a busy Piccadilly scene in mid 1985. 47460 runs round the stock to form the 13:45 Cardiff service. For a while this was mainly class 47s before becoming reliably a class 33 working. Just needs a centre plough for perfection!
GLASGOW CENTRAL: 50009 & 50036
Blimey it's a pair of large logo 50s in Scotland. Given today's tour this seemed appropriate - 14th May 1988 and the 'Hoover Dambuster' has arrived in Glasgow after an epic run up the WCML.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 85003
A clean and tidy 85003 runs off the blocks to await her next turn in mid 1987. She's likely brought the stock in forming the 11:45 Birmingham - possibly as a ECS from Longsight. The fog of a departing DMU is just hanging in the air. Unforgettable!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86225
'Hardwicke' runs into platform 5 with a down Euston. This is spring 1985 I think. 86225 had an odd centre headlight, long before they became the norm. It was basically a car spotlight I think!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 33005 & 31/4
The challengers for the 13:45 'Ardwick Classic Challenge' are under starters orders. Plungers pressed, who will win the race? The 33 is off to Cardiff, and the 31 bound for Cleethorpes. The highlight of the day!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47650
It is a lovely spring afternoon. 47650 has brought in a down cross country service. I see evidence around the front carriage window that I have ridden the train up from Macclesfield. A touch of mirror slap has blurred things a bit, but nice light.
DARLINGTON: 43085
The very last passengers join as 'City of Bradford' waits impatiently for departure to Edinburgh or beyond around Easter 1985. I love that all three of the train-crew are visible - Traction Inspector, Driver and Guard all seen performing their duties.
POYNTON: 87/0
A unidentified class 87 rushes a northbound express through Poynton around Summer 1990. Sadly can't get a good enough read on the name to identify her.
CARLISLE: 26038
Inspired by
@nickbro76777852
shots of Carlisle I'll post this - the only time I ever saw a McRat south of the Border. It was late in the day, Jan 1987, I'd travelled down the G&SWR from Glasgow and there it was. The Fuji neg hasn't fared well, but worth a look.
PRESTON: 37373 / 37370
A pair of Scottish 37/3s take a cement train north through Preston. I don't know a lot about the 37/3s, but I think they were modified for work on heavy trains, without full refurbishment. What I do remember is the noise this pair made through the station!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86438
@miles_chains
brilliant shot of 87002 inspired me to pull this out. On a sunny afternoon the train-shed at Piccadilly fills with a warm, beautifully diffused light. 86438 sits on the blocks on platform 9 having brought in a down Euston in spring 1987.
STOCKPORT: 87012
A de-named 87012 hurries an up Euston into platform 2 at Stockport. In the background Stockport no.2 signalbox, most famous for being the place where I did my work experience aged 16. It was a brilliant time. Prime achievement - put one these through platform 1!
STOCKPORT: 37685 & 37683
A pair of tractors ease a Peak Forest aggregate train out of platform 3 at Stockport. 1988 or so. Pure filth. Shouldn't be allowed!
MACCLESFIELD: 310095
The stylish class 310 EMUs were regulars on the Manchester-Stafford services in the early 80s. Spring 1985 sees 095 pause at Macclesfield. A shot that features in the soon to be released 'Electric Eighties' Volume 3.
𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗚: 𝙀𝙇𝙀𝘾𝙏𝙍𝙄𝘾 𝙀𝙄𝙂𝙃𝙏𝙄𝙀𝙎
I've created an eighty page photo-book! Somewhat in the style of the 70s and 80s publications from Bradford Barton or OPC, production values are a tad low, but If you are interested take a look here:
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 37428
'David Lloyd George' runs around before taking the afternoon Cardiff service south in 1988. I think that's 48598 in the background sporting a nice red buffer beam. The 37/4 were fairly new at this point, and the filters left a lovely smell in the air.
CREWE: 89001
The Badger backs onto a test train at Crewe in Summer 1987 (I think). Always thought it was an ambitious set of contradictions, but a mighty machine nonetheless. Looking forward to seeing running again!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47410
A slightly different angle looking over the platform 10 blocks. 'Generator' 47410 has brought in a service from the Southwest. I can't remember exactly what working this was, probably Plymouth or Paignton - it often produced a generator. Autumn 1985.
LLANDUDNO JUNCTION: 25322
The ice cream van known as 'Tamworth Castle' shunts in the yard at Llandudno Junction in summer 1987. I'm in two minds about posting this one, it is a rescue job of a fairly poor shot, but I think it has value, and to me has many points of interest.
STALYBRIDGE: 45135
'3rd Carabinier' arrives into Stalybridge with an eastbound service. This looks like early 1987. The May 1987 timetable saw huge changes to the Trans-Pennine with the 150/2s picking up all but Liverpool-Newcastle which became class 47/4 diagrams.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: CLASS 304 TC
The interior of a first class compartment in a class 304 TC. These were often locked out of use, but sometimes not - most of the niceties had been stripped, but there was one at least left with pictures and mirrors still in place. Good times.
LONDON EUSTON: 86401
Had the proper camera with me today so some decent images of 86401 catching some rays in the centre road adjacent platform 16 at Euston.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 87101
Super power for a couple of vans! 87101 awaits the off from the twilight zone that was platforms 11 & 12. Interestingly, the track in platform 12 seems to have been lifted. 1987 I think.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 87101
Superpower for a couple of vans as 'Stephenson' waits to take the train south on a sunny day in 1987. A hard image to prep - there's both shake and softness - which is odd for a bright day! Anyway, lots to see all around in this one!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 87032
'Kenilworth' runs through platform 13 with a southbound liner on a damp, murky day in 1988. A scan of on of the very few prints I have remaining. Interesting how much dynamic range and detail is lost scanning the print vs a negative.
POYNTON: 86236
A crisp winter day sees 'Josiah Wedgwood' push south through Poynton with an afternoon Euston service. Most likely very early 1987. Sorry I've not been about much - very busy at the moment with a few things. Hope everyone is ok.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 87002
'Royal Sovereign' waits departure with an up Euston service on a spring day in 1988. This is a shot from the 'Electric Eighties' photobook series. Free to download:

Volume 2:
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86233
'Hector' waits for time with the 11:30 Birmingham New Street. I believe this to be 27th December 1985. I remember the day - grey and cold, but nice to be out and about at last after two days of no movement!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86402
I think there were four rail blue class 86/4s - one of them was 86402 seen here awaiting departure with a Euston service on a dampish day in 1986.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86401
The sole example of NSE liveried class 86 sits on the platform 5 blocks having brought in a down Euston service one evening in very early 1987. Seemed appropriate as there's a few night time shots of class 86s on Platform 5 knocking about :-)
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: CLASS 43
What a nose! An unidentified HST waiting to head south in the late 80s with a Plymouth or Paignton service. Hard to believe these are gone. Just the 91s left now, and then I guess that's it for my era. We've had a decent run!
POYNTON: 253033
An IC125 bursts out of the dawn light under the Chester Road bridge in Poynton on an icy morning in Winter 1987. This is the first from the 'overlooked collection'. Shots that I didn't scan on grounds of quality or interest first time round. I'm happy I went back!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 45106
45s were not that common in Piccadilly, but did show up from time to time. 45106 is therefore a somewhat unusual visitor to platform 8. The summer timetable in 1987 saw a SO Paignton trip run, which was often formed of a Pullman mk3 set.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 87024
'Lord of the Isles' stands at the platform 8 blocks having brought in a Euston service circa summer 1986. The little glimpses into everyday life in many of the shots are a joy. The old guy with the trolley and hat on platform 6 takes me back!
MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 31162, 31206 & 31107
Classic Victoria, classic lineup. Three thirty ones sunbathing in the middle road at Manchester Victoria. You've seen this one before, but this is a new processing. Fair to say I've picked up some new tricks in the last couple of years!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 31/4
A dark, damp spring day sees sees a Liverpool - Yarmouth service pause in the newly extended platform 13. This was very shortly after the platform opened, and canopy hasn't yet been erected. I'd ridden the train over from Lime Street - a spirited run!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47411
'The Geordie' stands at the blocks having dragged in a down Euston in 1987. This would be just before the managed decline of the generators began. 411 was always a favourite along with 407 and 413. Didn't see a huge number of them at Piccadilly.
STOCKPORT: CLASS 104
The hourly Stalybridge - Stockport works the last few chains into the bay platform. This used to be a crucial link to the northern Trans-Pennine services.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86427
86244 lurks in the background, as 'The Industrial Society' is released from the blocks. It will follow the departing train to the signal at the platform end and wait, before proceeding to the engine siding or Longsight. Summer 1986.
MACCLESFIELD: 304032
Hard mid day light greets the arrival of 304032 into Macclesfield with a Stoke service at some point in 1987 or 88. I don't remember making a point of shooting the 304s, but I'm glad to say I seem to have a fair few shots :-)
ADLINGTON: 304027
Two Fresian cows studiously ignore 304027 heading North from Adlington. The 304s were the trains I grew up with. I've found it is the images of what was then 'ordinary' that are the most special now. D200 at Stockport could happen again. A 304, never again!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47613
'North Star' waits departure with the 13:45 Cardiff. The latter years of this working usually produced a Western Region 47. The service was always a point of interest, mainly because it involved a run round and propelling manoeuvre. Probably 1987.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 310084
A colourful start to 2023! NSE liveried 310084 waits departure with what I think is the 13:36 to Stoke-on-Trent most likely in autumn 1986. Unusual by this point to see a 310 on the Stoke runs, although they were frequently used on the Birminghams.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 37350
The evening Cardiff departure in the hands of 37350 in mid 1988. Seems odd to post this today having had a Peak day yesterday. However, I'm agnostic and always enjoyed my runs behind these to Stockport of Wilmslow.
LIVERPOOL LIME STREET: 47569
A bright spring day sees 47569 beautifully lit in the trainshed at Liverpool Lime Street. I think this is spring 1990 towards the end of loco hauled TransPennines. Happily, 47569 is alive and well, and I saw her today as 47727 heading though Reading!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 25059
A sub zero, snowy 1987 day sees an unusual visitor to platform 7. I recall serious IRROPs with diesel workings, and a big shunt to get the failed mk2 FO behind out of the consist of the morning Brighton. I went to Buxton for a day out in the snow!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86213
'Lancashire Witch' catches the last of the winter afternoon sun most likely in 1985. Shortly after this was taken the AEI crossarm would have been replaced with a Stone Faiveley or Brecknell Willis type pantograph.
MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 31162, 31206 & 31107
Classic Victoria, classic lineup. Can you believe that this was once an everyday, almost boring scene. It's a repost, but I've sorted the colour and exposure from the original. A celebration of
@Bennybizzle1
reaching 1000 followers today.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 87002
Arriving passengers stream past 'Royal Sovereign' which has safely delivered the 08:15 from Euston into platform 8. Most likely spring of 1987. A slightly different angle. Not sure why I didn't wait for the passengers to all pass by. Glad I didn't.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86233
Winter 1985 and 'Hector' waits for time with the 11:30 Birmingham New Street. A shot from Volume 2 of 'Electric Eighties'. Check it out here...
GLASGOW CENTRAL: 85037
A beautiful spring afternoon sees 85037 working an ECS out of Glasgow Central. This is 14th May 1988 - I spent a lovely couple of hours in Glasgow after being whisked up the WCML by Conqueror and Victorious on the Hoover Dambuster. Happiest of days!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: DAWN OF THE DINSOSAURS
Two 304s rest in the morning sun having just arrived from Stoke and Hazel Grove. Note the 'Manchester Pullman' sign on platform 8. I'm currently prepping the content for volume 3 of 'Electric 80s' Look out for volume 2 very soon!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86219
Saturday 9th November 1985 sees 'Phoenix' catch the very last rays of the afternoon sun at the head of 16:00 Euston. I was thrilled to see her. I had the model and she was my favourite. Also the day before my Birthday, so a very good day all around!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86205
'City of Lancaster' waits for departure with a Euston service in 1985. Inter City executive livery was about to become widespread and the AEI crossarm pantographs would soon disappear.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 31432
Emblazoned with Stratford cockney sparrow 31432 takes what is probably 1E55 10:45 Liverpool - Yarmouth out of platform 13 likely in 1987. Was 432 a Stratford loco? I'm very hazy on such details!
KYLE OF LOCHALSH: 37414
A grey, cool day in Kyle of Lochalsh sees 37414 about to depart with the afternoon service to Inverness. Taken from the bridge in your photo I think
@miles_chains
? Summer 1986.
MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 47463
Continuing our look at the glamorous side of life, here's another shot of Victoria station in the mizzle. 47463 waits for its next duty as a Pacer prepares to bounce off somewhere. Seems other worldly now.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: CLASS 90
A smart looking mainline liveried class 90 has arrived into Piccadilly with an ex Euston service. I think this is late summer 1989, but can't be sure. Always thought that mainline looked very neat and tidy!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 56080
The rain is set in for the day, but some grid action lifts the spirits as 56080 screams through platform 13 with some bogie tanks. I presume that this is a working from Stanlow. It was usually a 37 IIRC. Anyone know more about the working? Late 1986.
MANCHESTER VICTORIA: 47612
'Titan' prepares for the run north to Preston with a Glasgow/Edinburgh service. A page from volume 3 of 'Electric Eighties' - details on my profile.
STOCKPORT: GROWLER ACTION
It's all go at Stockport on this late summer afternoon. Four class 37s head north through the station whilst a 47/3 takes a loaded limestone train south formed of ICI hoppers. Stockport was good for growlers, generally.(sorry)
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 47478
There's a lot of focus on the end of the class 68s on the southern Trans-Pennine. A look back to how things were. 47478 makes an somewhat unusual appearance on platform 1 vice the more usual class 31/4 on a Hope Valley train in winter 1985.
STOCKPORT: 81017
81017 roars its way through platform 2 at Stockport on a southbound liner. Didn't see so many of these back then compared to today. I'm going to say spring 1987.
SHEFFIELD: 43038
Just heard the sad news of the passing of Sir Kenneth Grange. Only one image I could think of to pull out of the archive - this one of the record breaking 43038.
STOCKPORT: 87027
'Wolf of Badenoch' eases a down express into Stockport in 1987. Ahead, just the final eight minute sprint to Piccadilly before the wolf take her rest. An image prepared for volume 3 of 'Electric 80s'. Volume 2 will be available to download very soon!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86425
Summer 1987 sees 86425 brings empty stock into platform 10 which will form a southbound cross country service. Apologies I've not been so active on here of late, an awfully busy time on a number of fronts!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86421
'London School of Economics' on the platform 8 blocks. This is winter 1985/6 when I used a tripod and tried to expose for the shadows. Even so this has had about plus four stops in the scan to deal with the winter gloom. Love the glow of the lights!
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 82106
A beautiful spring day in 1989 sees 82106 parked on platform 1 for familiarisation. I was doing work experience with the Area Movements Inspectors at the time and we came out and had a good look over the DVT. Also of note is the ex WM DMU behind.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86431
Recently converted 86431 heads a short van train on platform 11 in mid 1986. Platform 10 felt remote, but in comparison 11&12 were a shadowy foreign land where anything could, and did happen. I posted a shot of of 86031 earlier which I'll link below.
MACCLESFIELD: 90008
The driver of 90008 has a look back to see what the hold up is. 90s were starting to pop up and I'd ridden this down from Manchester for one of my first bits of class 90 haulage. I think the train is the 11:30 Birmingham, and it is probably early summer 1988.
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY: 86257
A weary, tired looking, still blue 'Snowdon' waits at the platform 7 blocks. Interesting to note a full suite of mods - wipers, headlight, jumpers but still rail blue. Summer 88 I think.
LIVERPOOL LIME STREET: 47448
'Gateshead' awaits departure from Lime Street with a Newcastle service in 1988. This was the second 47 to be named Gateshead, the plates moving from 402. 448 was as far as I can tell never a Gateshead loco, being mainly Crewe allocated.
