@thehistoryguy My wife's boss was at primary school in the next valley that day - she still hears the voices shouting outside in the street and the sound of people running down the road to help. NCB heads should have rolled - and survivors and families were treated appallingly.

It's 29th December 1981 & 55017 has only 2 more days left in service as it arrives at Grantham with 1A08, the 0807 York - Kings Cross. The bitterly cold & gloomy weather is one of my clearest memories of those last few hours of the Deltic era in BR service.

OK so I'm a day late for #MidWeekPeak but it's #ThrowbackThursday so I thought I'd share this reminder of a time when us Provincials could rock up at St Pancras and not have to walk halfway to Luton to catch a train home. 45103, 1E49, 1600 to Sheffield, 3/6/1982.

Right, who's up for a bit of #Roarer mileage? 85018 arrives at Crewe on 1st September 1981 with 1M55, the 0740 Penzance - Liverpool Lime St, which it would have worked forward from Birmingham. #ThrowbackThursday

I've posted these 2 pics before, but now they've had a bit of a clean they look even better. Remember when every holiday train that crossed the Pennines had a Class 40 on the front? 16CSVT cornucopia, York 22/8/1981.

It's 31st July 1980, and a sneaky bit of lunchtime breaking of the 'no photography' rule sees 'vacuum only' 25 080 hooked up to the big kettle upstairs in the Test House at Derby Loco Works. #Raturday

IIRC 50013 'Agincourt' was the last 50 to be refurbished and outshopped in Rail Blue, as opposed to large logo blue. I'd just ridden behind it from Reading to Banbury, where this photo was taken on 6th April 1982 on 1M07, the 1350 Paddington - Liverpool. #FiftiesOnFriday

This will be my last photo of an HST in regular service in the Shire - 1V50 passing Breadsall this morning. I learned my trade from (& owe so much to) the engineers who designed this fleet - after 40+ years of service, I think they can be rightly proud. Job done ✅️.

Next slide out of the box is this one of 40194 calling at Llandudno Junction on Saturday 24th July 1982 with 1D29, 1045 Manchester Vic - Holyhead. Another one in the seemingly endless procession of 40's to be enjoyed along the North Wales Coast in the early 80's. #FortiesOnFriday

Time for #ThirtySevensOnThursday - here's an immaculate 37061 outside the weigh house at Doncaster on 21/1/1981. Think it had at least an Intermediate overhaul, judging by the repaint? Static tests are in progress prior to a load run to Newcastle with the ex-LMS parcels van set.

Ahh, a typical 1980's Dawlish scene. Happy holidaymakers waving to a Class 50-hauled train with a head sticking out of every droplight. Except that isn't a head protruding from the leading one!😀 No record of the working, but it's 50034 and the date was 23/5/81. #FiftiesOnFriday

This is what a Class 50 power unit (EE 16CSVT) looks like 'out of the box'. This one was being reassembled after overhaul at BREL Doncaster in Jan 1981. The turbocharger & intercooler on each corner of a gives it a nice symmetry (us engineers like that😀) #FiftiesOnFriday
