Ok-deep breaths. I wrote a deeply personal piece re some of my experiences/observations of family violence. Sharing such stories can be part of the collaborative effort to denounce violence against women, girls & people of all genders.

grammar news is yet more in a long line of evidence that illustrates the nonsense/classist logic of framing boys from poor suburbs as ‘the problem’. The issue is up and down the socioeconomic spectrum, but the ‘elite’ boys take these attitudes into positions of power.
You know how we want to normalise academic experience of ‘failure’? Well how is this for an academic who failed. I just got back from dentist & turns out I had a (clean) SOCK on my shoulder the whole way there, during the treatment & payment & all the way back. No one asked why!

At 19 I married someone who was pregnant (not ‘my’ baby). Marriage lasted 4 years, but parenthood forever. My nearly 21 year old daughter represents my best ever decision. Kindest, most lovely human I ever met. This is she with me, my brother & my son.

Off the scale happy and honoured to be able to formally announce that I’ve been appointed Professor of Education & Social Justice at

A few thanks and thoughts on interdependence & ‘the journey’:

Fun personal news: it’s been announced I’ll be Head of School of Edu, Culture & Society

Reminding everyone that it’s significantly easier to ‘make it’ in the world when you have a 300 million dollar head start.
My biological dad died few hours ago. We were not close but he wasn’t cruel, like some ‘dads’ who came & went in my life.
Emotionally blurry times. By luck we managed to exchange some kind messages just last week.
Be kind. Bury those hatchets. Proceed with love where you can ❤️
We stayed there for two days. Somehow the perp was talked down. Eventually made a new life elsewhere. Counting dead women as a measure of men’s violence is the tip of the ice berg. Many more are ‘almost’ on that list too. Men must join women to stand against masculine violence.
late summer 1987, age 9, mum woke me. She was panicked, crying. ‘Jimmy’s coming, Jimmy’s coming we have to go NOW’. Wearing pyjamas + a Parker, I walked bare foot over a mile, holding my little brother’s hand while my mum &cousins carried my other siblings. 1/n

My other big life news this week: am Aussie now :)
#globalcitizen
I do want to stress, though, that insisting the event takes place on invasion day is shocking and deeply sad. :(
Earlier this year my wife observed that some of my longstanding friendships in UK are sustained only by me checking in. So I took the test. Didn’t initiate a single message (for a change) for six months. And not a single peep. Some things are transitory, I guess 😥
So grateful for the many who have shared this. Can the few who think this is ‘politicising’ pls reflect on: a) how the personal/ familial experience is at the very heart of the political. B) all experience is shaped by policy!
And can they also stop being so bloody heartless.

😢😡 just can’t with the academic dude bros.
Will we ever have the reckoning of ‘Superstar academics’, more broadly, and their histories of sexual misconduct and/or relentless bullying??
Boaventura de Sousa Santos, who is known for writing about the epistemologies of the south and decolonization, has been accused of sexual misconduct. His former students at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra detail his actions in chapter 12.
I’m hurt and angry to see particular academics essentially reducing innocent Black and Brown people being attacked in England’s streets as ‘protest’ or the seemingly more palatable ‘breaking the law’. This is RACISM. It’s aided, abetted & stoked by academics & far right grifters
I want to again normalise that rejection, as well as success, is everywhere in academia. Today we had another article rejection.
And yes we are sad and (for me) even a little bitter. And in my bitterness want to acknowledge that reviewers don’t always enhance a paper. 😝😬🤷🏽♂️✊🏾

Am extremely grateful, but the timing of announcement is horrid for 1000s :(
Yes, I am an all too easily emotional chap, but don’t care that much for Xmas. Yet felt fully caught off guard emotion and lump in my throat watching this guy be excited by Christmas tree for the first time 🎄🎅🥹
Finally, FINALLY after a long 2.5 years or so I have a work from home set up that will be good for writing books that, let’s face it, do not look like they are gonna write themselves. Fingers crossed for productivity ahead!
4yo had back from kinder talking gendered shit for the first time - I’m devo. Only girls have long hair; boys have power, girls have no power (maybe he is right but he ain’t being critical!); all the boys together is better. And he doubled down when we tried to talk about it. 😭
@Benavidez_Gabe
Sadly there are far too many occasions when people describe themselves as first gen in relation to the PhD. I see this a lot. It’s almost always without malice, but it’s a problematic lack of insight.

Commiserations to the unlucky many. I’ve been that end of the stick many, many times. It’s going to suck to get this news in Xmas eve for the majority of colleagues. Bitter sweet feeling for the funded peeps.
Congratulations to those successful in this ARC DP round. Sadly, that is not me/us! A huge kick in the guts after receiving only praise from the reviewers. Important, though, to share these losses as much as we share our wins.
Not ignoring institutional privileges, but

Absurd and surreal given COVID. This week has seen accepted co authored articles in Sociological Review, and in Cultural Sociology, publication of the Youth Sociology text book, and a acceptance to co edit an Emerald book series on masculinities. Utterly April 1st type stuff.

The maths seems to be confusing some people here. But let’s be clear, it’s the working poor who are disproportionate givers. When the poor can’t give to the poorer, this is the result. :(

Amidst all the Greta discussion, I’m stuck again that while 97% of scientists agree that climate change is a human made disaster, denialism and associated conspiracy is wildly, disproportionately high. The number of people going after Greta with that tune is a horrible sight.
My 4yo has recently started to get his head around that I have a job, and I cannot get enough of how he talks about me going to the ‘you know versity’.

This guy had previously broken my mum’s jaw, almost drowned my brother, damaged my bladder with a punch along other things. We took refuge at the home of a kind man, someone who was widely derided in the community for no real reason. He was kind. He saved our life. 3/n

‘Manfluencers’, masculinities & the practice of misogyny in educational settings: critical analyses, theoretical advances…
If you loved being a royal subject or just think it’s sad when life is done, do mourn for the Queen all you like. BUT stop the grotesque policing, vilifying & undermining of the voiced feelings of those across many nations who were/are on the receiving end of colonialism.
Our little guy had such bad gastro bug; he hadn’t eaten since Wed & couldnt drink even water for nearly 3 days. in & out of hospital since midnight Friday, including 14 hours through to 1am last night . Tough exhausting times. 😵💫
But today, finally eating a jam sodden pancake! 🥳
Even after 8.5 years here, I still feel surprised by the limited industrial relations literacy, including and maybe especially that many folks seem generally unaware that union members sacrifice pay when on strike in pursuit of better conditions for all staff 🤷🏽♂️
What the Shore School scandal should reminds us, but what is often fundamentally overlooked, is that ‘working class lads’ are NOT the standard bearers of ‘toxic masculinity’. We must stop using poor kids as scapegoats for this stuff.

This was the threat of my step dad in the months after their finally separating - it was the slow culmination of yrs of manipulation, terrorising, property destruction, violence against kids & mother. Entitled, with masculine outrage, he wanted to hurt us to hurt my mum. 2/n

celebrating my mum. What if mum was believed about her sexual assault as a child? What if she didn’t have to endure men’s violence for decades? What if she didn’t *have* to be more resilient than anyone? What if women could thrive & not just try to survive?

I’m just a skinny brown man boy, in my rain soaked trackies and hoodie, standing in front of yet another medical/professional staff member who is overtly double taking me because they expected someone else to stand up when they call out ‘Dr Roberts’.
