This is true - but not what enjoy writing, or what I enjoy reading. But it's a trend. I am interested in uncovering narratives around people, not analysing list management and defensive patterns. And I don't read that stuff either. It's a big generational shift in taste.
@BradWalterSport @SteveMascord Players (and to a lesser extent coaches) are far more guarded these days. Journos can add value by analysing the nuances of the game, esp tactically - we do watch the game for a living, after all. Almost all the best soccer writing involves no players and nobody cares.

I resisted pressure from sports editors to offer my own opinion for years but when you get older it does start to feel like a responsibility ... when you see officials making the same errors over and over again and there's no corporate memory. It feels like a duty.

An important lesson. When people know your opinion on things, too, they trust your reporting less. I had an example of this just last week.
