Look who made an appearance yesterday! Our beautiful snowy owl, Snedge, seemingly awoken by a noisy oystercatcher. She wasn't worried about me - taking time to regurgitate a pellet and have a preen - so I left her to it! 🦉

We spent an unforgettable hour with Snedge on Thursday as she was down in Village Glen for a bath. She came to rest on the other side of the glen from us where she preened and dried off in the sunshine. A fantastic encounter shared by the @N_T_S team! #snowyowl

Snedge was found perching on Lady Grange's Cleit in the village yesterday, with the Factor's House beyond. She doesn't usually shelter inside the head dyke, so this was a privileged sight, and demonstrates the severity of the force 10 storm! Thanks to Will Miles for the photo.

817 years ago this month a stormy series of events lead to the earliest mention of St Kilda in history. An Icelandic Bishop was blown very much off course on his way to Norway, and took shelter in ‘the islands that are called Hirtir’. Later recounted in an Icelandic saga.

It's been a spectacular day out here on #Stkilda where we're on island doing some essential winter maintenence. Glad to have a few hours off to climb Conachair in the snow! #worldheritagesite #visitscotland #fortheloveofscotland

This view is of the ‘other side’ of Hirta from the smaller island of Soay. Sometimes it's good to look at things from a different angle !

Snedge presented herself again yesterday. She makes fine use of St Kilda's cleits - there's always one to provide shelter whichever way the wind is blowing! Heading up the hill in search of a sunset this evening, so we'll see if she's still around 🤞🦉🌅 #snowyowl #rangerlife

As this evening draws to a close we're thinking of the St Kildan families 89 years ago who were spending their final night on Hirta prior to the evacuation early tomorrow morning. What a mixture of emotions it must have been seeing darkness fall over their homes for the last time

In June I found a puffin that had sadly died in a burrow where an egg had been laid. The puffin was ringed as a chick in 1981 at the same colony on Dùn - making it nearly an incredible 38 years old! Let's hope this year's chicks are still laying eggs on Dùn 40 years from now!

St Kilda is a beautiful spot on this amazing planet but we are already witnessing the effects of climate change here😥😥We are nowhere near where we need to be but have to believe progress is still possible #COP26 #WorldHeritage
