One of the last big fishes to come say hi last week before we left the islands! It was a fair size of fish when you see it next to the boat! Cearban Mhor is 12m long so how big do you estimate the shark to be?

Basking Shark 🦈 vs Bluefin Tuna 🐟
Exclusive for
#worldbaskingsharkday
a 🧵
A world’s first moment from this summer. We captured this amazing event, where a bluefin tuna attacked a basking shark for around 20min. Check out the drone footage 👇 /1
Classic Hebrides weather at the moment but we’ve had some great
#baskingshark
action in the calm periods. We had our best shark day in 3 years this week- great to be back in the thick of it! We’ve captured some great scientific results and footage which we’ll try and share soon
.
We’ve captured a lot of cool footage of basking shark encounters over the years, but this must have been one of the most epic! This poor shark was harassed by the blue fin tuna for quite some time. The Sea of the Hebrides really is a wildlife hotspot! What will we see this year?!
Do you sometimes feel like a basking shark during the Christmas period, constantly feeding? Just substitute copepods with mince pies! In this film you can see the gill arches flaring as the shark filters a vast quantity of water, gathering it's tiny prey.

The second recorded trans-Atlantic movement of a basking shark! Malin head, Ireland in 2014 to Massachusetts, USA in 2017! The shark was a satellite tagged female, the tag had stopped working but researchers were still able to ID it when it was photographed off the US coast!

Very obliging of this basking shark to indicate it was turning left before it passed in front of my camera! Want to get this close? Still a few limited spaces left on our shark trips this season.

cruising out in the big blue!
This is the first time we’ve filmed a basking shark like this, with fish schooling to move out the sharks way. The situation makes it look very predatory! 😍🦈
2/ Forgive the sensational headline, it was a dramatic scene with one very p

off shark. The shark swam in very tight circles in a defensive posture, thrashing as it tries to evade the tuna. The drone footage allows a really great aerial perspective and shows….
After thousands of miles of searching and a number of fleeting views this season we had our first proper
#baskingshark
view! As suspected the plankton layer is 2-3m below the surface and the shark was happily feeding away below the boat.
Join us on one of our multi-day wildlife and swim adventure tours to encounter these amazing animals. Help with our science programme whilst having a great time exploring the Hebrides!

What a special day we had to visit St Kilda this week. After spending 5 hours exploring ashore on Hirta. We had glass calm to motor around Stac Lee, Stac an Armin & Boreray before heading back to Barra. Trip of a lifetime!
3/ …the tuna constantly pursuing the sharks tail. Numerous times it’s bumps into the shark for unknown reasons. t’s was an amazing spectacle and one which is being looked at for hopefully future publication. In the meantime then enjoy a few crazy clips.
We found this absolute weapon whilst snorkeling. The bell was around a metre with the tentacles extending 4-5m behind it. A predator in the water column, a good sign to see big ones like this. Amazing to watch them from a safe distance.

Great news- the first report of a
#baskingshark
in the
#Hebrides
today. It is early, as the main season is later in the year, but not surprising given the recent conditions. We’ll be out to see them soon. For info - our earliest sighting was 5th April 2015.

SCOTLAND!
Yes many people's perception of Scotland is of grey skies, wind and rain - we certainly get our fair share of that but we've been also treated to a fair bit of sunshine and great conditions lately. This is the view from Coll looking north to the islands of Rum and Eigg.
Unbelievable first day on
#barra
. One the most exposed places was very calm and allowed the swimmers to take on King Kong and swim the arch. Some very very luck people on our trip!

Although we mainly talk about our bigger sharks friends, we can also spot the small spotted catshark whilst snorkelling in the Hebrides. Growing to around half a meter in length these little sharks are one of the most abundant species found in British waters.

We're heading offshore tomorrow to start our main 'shark season'! It's quite a logistical effort to get boats/vans/gear/people out to the islands but it's all worthwhile being in the heart of the action and scoring days like this!
When we're swimming with sharks sometimes you'll see only one the surface but there are more hiding below! We think one of the reasons that you see sharks following one another like this is that it can give them a hydrodynamic advantage.
Trips live here:
Snorkelling, SUPs and a lunch ashore on perfect white sand beach. Amazing to easily reach stunning coastlines like this not far from

Sometimes we see them a few minutes from the pier. Other times they disappear for weeks. Or sometimes you are just floating along and one swims under the boat. This was an amazing

encounter, it fed merrily as we drifted with the current. Join us in summer 2024!
Wow! Fin whale for us today. First time we’ve seen one this far in.

When a basking shark's mouth is closed they look at their 'sharkiest', you can see how mistakes can be made between them and their close cousin the great white. We will soon be releasing dates for next years trips and will let you all know when the 2020 shark tours are online!
Happy world oceans day! This video from last years day is worth reposting again. We’re about month away from starting our main basking shark season and we’re looking forward to seeing the sharks arriving in bigger numbers soon!

eDNA in action. We used to capture this by skin slime and physically touching the shark. The university has refined the technique so we can capture it from the shark swimming past only. Great to be part of this project and have a fridge full of samples this summer.
Great secret beach as a stop off for lunch on our tour today. Off out to swim in fingals cave and visit the puffin's again tomorrow! Can't beat Scotland in the sun!
A close up look at the basking shark!
Like other sharks basking sharks are covered in dermal denticles! These tiny scales are actually more like teeth than the scales we see in other fish, in whale sharks these have even been found in the eyeball!

this evening. They are featuring a 5 min film made by our head guide Luke, all shot while guiding our trips over the last few years - excited for our summer season!
Whilst it’s not been a stellar summer season so far for sharks around the inner hebs. There is an increase in sightings now so fingers crossed for a stronger August.
