YouTube claims this change is to "create more consistency" and (via Creator Insider) that this is in line with instagram, facebook, and twitter. Though we prefer seeing the full numbers on YouTube we're 100% fine if they want to change their site to have abbreviated numbers.

If YouTube's goal was to stop live counters alone this would be sad because there are so many good reasons to watch a live counter as you reach a milestone. We love seeing people celebrate hitting their first 1k, or 100k, or 1m etc but even this we'd understand.

YouTube announced they are going live with abbreviated subscriber counts in September. While we're not happy they're going this route we'll be adapting the site to support this change to keep providing you data.

The compassion to the other sites though is wrong in two regards. Yes, they might show abbreviated numbers, but if you mouse over the values you see the full numbers. Also, unlike YouTube's proposed change, 3rd party's get the full data.

Seeing a lot of reports of weirdness on YouTube right now, sub counts mismatching, views flat-lining, weird recommendations (especially on kids chans). Our *GUESS* (since YouTube can't say this) is they're throwing ever experiment at it they can in preparation for Jan 1st.

Now that those items are out of the way, what we're hearing unofficially is this is in response to negative attention to people watching live counts. We get that. This is why we stay away from talking or promoting any youtube fights but only promote people reaching milestones.

As of about 3pm ET (19:00 UTC) today YouTube has started to abbreviate subscriber counts via the api. Right now it seems to be hit or miss which channels have exact numbers & which ones don't. Read this to see how to best use Social Blade going forward:

So far almost all responses to YouTube's tweet, support article, and creator insider video are saying this is a bad idea. We're hoping that YouTube looks at this feedback and takes it into consideration. This doesn't just effect us, this effects the entire YouTube landscape.

The biggest issue we see from all of this is in the longer time frame. Our site will still work if they go through with this change, but the granularity will be lost. For example, PewDiePie hit 95M subs on April 28th and 96M on May 22nd. Right now we see updates each day.

To be clear, the only feature of Social Blade that is massively impacted by YouTube's change is real time sub counts. The rest of our features will still work is pretty much the same way. You can still research a channels historical performance, find channels to work with, etc.

For what its worth our theory for the real reason of the #YouTubePartnerCulling is to compete better with Netflix, Amazon etc. If YouTube has less people to pay (and still the same ad $) they can pay big partners more, so they don't leave the platform. Wish they'd just admit that.

Reminder, when looking at anyone's YT Social Blade forever into the future. Sept 17th 2019 you may see a big red number. This is due to YouTube removing all but the first 3 digits of a sub count. So for example 101,456,396 subs changes to 101,000,000 or a rounded "loss" of 450k
