“Despite the gravity of these issues, these bills have received almost no media coverage and have attracted very little public attention. … It is a sad indictment on our polity that neither major party has taken these steps – nor even conceded that they are necessary. Instead, it takes two independent senators to call out Australia’s apparent indifference to its obligations under the most fundamental of international human rights laws. But now that Senators Thorpe and Payman have done so, it is incumbent on the media, and ultimately each of us as voters, to ask our federal parliamentarians where they stand on these bills, and if they do not support them, why not. For those of us who want to see our nation uphold international humanitarian law, their responses should be a litmus test in the coming federal election.”

My mother aged 19 and grandmother are pictured here around the time they were deported by cattle train to Auschwitz on 1st June 1944. On arrival at the terminal seen in the picture they were selected by Dr. Josef Mengele for the Vernichtungslager C (Extermination camp C) and the rest of the family went directly to the gas chambers. My mother and grandmother were liberated by the Russians 80 years ago today. In view of the shameful exploitation of the Holocaust to justify the crimes of Israel, Palestinian representative to the UN Majed Bamya put it eloquently: He said that exploiting, instrumentalising the Holocaust in this way is a desecration of the memory of the victims. "Never again" means never again to anyone.

In line with the precept of the philosopher J.S. Mill in his classical 1859 essay 'On Liberty' Chomsky said: “Goebbels was in favor of free speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you’re really in favor of free speech, then you’re in favor of freedom of speech for precisely the views you despise. Otherwise, you’re not in favor of free speech.”

As @ggreenwald points out, it’s all very well to defend free speech when it is about views you agree with but the real test is if you defend it when it comes to views with which you disagree.

@Ostrov_A I get it now. This must be a parody account: Outrage about peaceful protesting outside a hospital but supporting Israel’s destruction of all hospitals in Gaza and murdering medical staff and patients. Clever irony.
