If a man threatens to rape a woman, he is unlikely to know if the victim is born a woman or a trans woman. That behaviour should logically be seen as misogynistic. Again, this aligns with existing legislation protecting people from abuse motivated by prejudice. This is not new.

Very telling that in Ireland, where we already have self ID, and there have been no issues , there are no transphobic comments under this. Something has gone very very wrong in the UK, and it has to be acknowledged that the far right are behind it.

Anyone supporting Kate Forbes should seriously have tried growing up in Ireland when I did

Here's Dublin, on the night that Ireland became a Republic. Hopefully something similar lies in Scotland's future. #45 http://t.co/P0kfa1mJmw

🚨 NEW: Starmer has called for a "reset" of Scotland's gender reforms. "Changes which don’t carry public confidence are almost certainly not the right changes", he said.

Yep none of the guys acting concerned about this actually care about women and girls, and have actively done us harm at some point previously for the most part

It's striking how both the anti-trans and anti-migrant backlash are using the same rationale - 'protect women!' - using the all too real endemic crisis of male violence against girls and women to specifically target two vulnerable minorities.

I'm not sure why any immigrant would be OK with this kind of chat from Keir Starmer really

As always, I really wish people in the SNP would stop using Ireland as some kind of positive example. It's essentially a corporation tax haven, and most Irish people aren't benefiting from this surplus at all given the current Irish government

Small independent country in EU. With no where near the natural resources of neighbouring Scotland. Makes you think, eh?

Additional misogyny. Whatever you think of her politics, she's the elected fm, and you're some man calling her a meeter and greeter

I'm actually just so sad and angry that almost nobody seems to give a shit about women's rights or how women are treated in the criminal justice system outside of transphobia

I have absolutely no desire for kate forbes to win at all, but if she does end up doing so, suggesting that the entire system is rigged really won't work out in her favour. Incredibly silly indeed

having checked i am able to confirm that i understand Scots i’m curious as to whether the English census asks if people can understand Geordie, Scouse and Cockney (all of which are, on the same basis, examples of languages i also ken)?

As an indy supporting immigrant, I just love to be painted as some kind of Scottish supremacist, divisive, nationalist extremist by the UK Labour Party, while seeing them suggesting that formerly labour supporting brexit voters just have legitimate concerns that need understood

What's courteous is surely using the pronouns that the person you're speaking to or about wants you to use. This makes no sense if what you're actually concerned about is being courteous

Neither Stonewall nor gender critical absolutists should compel speech: I will use whatever pronouns I think courteous. My @thetimes column.

I'm really glad that quite a few columnists are now saying that Kate Forbes would be a disaster as FM, as a result of her conservative views, but I do think it was quite obvious during the actual leadership campaign, and it probably would have been helpful to be saying it then
