I've read that Alabama in the 1800s attempted several times to buy part of the Florida Panhandle from Florida to increase their coastline and potential ports. Had they been successful, Gore would have clearly won Florida in 2000 since that area is heavily GOP.

Mexico has some of the same geographic advantages the U.S. does, e.g. long coasts on both the Atlantic and Pacific. Plus a much shorter distance between them than the U.S.
If they ever get an effective government, you're right, they would be an economic powerhouse.
