The Golf GPS App Designed to Help You Play Smarter Golf. Quickly overlay your typical shot dispersion (aka your 'Shot Pattern') onto any hole in the world
Today’s a huge day at Shot Pattern:
🎉🎉
Our Shot Entry mode just went live!!
🎉🎉
Shot Pattern is now an incredible tool you can use before, during, and after your round.
Let me walk you through all the ways we’re trying to help golfers play better and score lower.
Let’s take a look at Augusta through the eyes of a PGA Tour Shot Pattern.
So, as you watch the broadcast, you’ll have an insider’s look into challenges, strategy, and where they really don’t want to miss.
Holes 1-6 👇🏼
At one point, smart golfers were getting ahead by using Google Maps to measure the satellite image of the course for their upcoming round.
Now they’re using Shot Pattern.
Boom! On the same day that
@practicalgolf
drops his newest book on competitive golf, we get word that
@ShotPattern
is officially “Permitted Under the Rules of Golf” 🥳
You can use the app in any round where rangefinders are allowed.
What a HUGE advantage for tournament players!
@LouStagner
From 192, anything inside 45’ is excellent for a scratch golfer. Here’s a 50’ circle. Key is to make sure the next shot is on dry land. I don’t want anything in my shot pattern that’s better than average to end up wet.
On this line, it’s about a 166 carry to hit the green.
A very cool “first” happened on the golf course today…
Playing a competitive round with two guys I’d never met. On the second hole one of them turns to me and says, “So have you ever heard of the app Shot Pattern?”
🥳🥳
🧐🧐🧐 A little behind the scenes on the work we're doing on THE MOST POWERFUL SHOT DISPERSION TOOL WE'VE EVER SEEN! - Expected strokes gained on any shots based on YOUR dispersion data.
This feature would be *highly* illegal during live play, so we're putting it in our Course
First off - this is a one man show. My name is Eric Duffett.
(You read that right. It’s pronounced “duff it.” Shoutout to
@acschenk1
@Kourtney_Schenk
@damonhackGC
and all the others who love this game despite the irony of our last names.)
I do all the jobs here.
Building out the Shot Pattern stats portal.
What are the most important stats you want to track?
One stat I haven't seen tracked anywhere that's critically important is "in play drives." Fairways hit + regular rough with a chance to hit the green.
What else?
@LouStagner
Cheat codes courtesy of Shot Pattern!
In this range, rough is about a 0.10-0.13 penalty bs fairway. But every 5 yards closer is going to lower the expected score by 0.04.
Rough is better by a little more than a tenth of a shot.
To everyone teeing it up this morning
• Have fun
• Be grateful you get to play
• Take several moments to soak in the experience
Remember, i̵t̵s̵ ̵j̵u̵s̵t̵ ̵g̵o̵l̵f̵ some of us are staring at four months of THIS 👇🏼and will be fighting the urge to punch you if you complain.
The next era of strokes gained is going to unlock incredible insights.
We have the technology to add more context to the shot.
I.E. Instead of expected strokes to hole out on an 8’ putt, we’ll have expected strokes to hole out on a downhill 8’ putt with 1% of break.
Let’s go!
‼️COMING SOON‼️
For those who want shot by shot tagging & strokes gained with zero on course distractions.
Full Round Entry Mode coming to the Shot Pattern app.
@LouStagner
Lou, you provide incredible value to the golf community. For every whiny DM there are hundreds, if not thousands, of us who love your statistical perspective, your sense of humor, and the way you share your love for the game. Keep statting!

It’s Shot Pattern’s birthday.
Holy 💩 have you guys made it a great year.
Every tweet, screenshot, email, phone call, feature request, poll vote - you guys are shaping the future for what comes next. Thank you!!
Let me tell you how we got here 👇🏼
We just unlocked a strokes gained feature in Shot Pattern that’s so good it’s almost cheating. 🎥 👇🏼
We tell you whether or not you’re going to gain strokes *before* you hit the shot.🤓
Tell us what club you’re going to hit and where you’re going to aim, and we can tell you
@LouStagner
From 150, I’ve got 76.1% of the time they’ll hit the green, average prox of 25’3”, and inside 20’ about 40% of the time.
Credit: your past tweets 🤣
Once we started overlaying a 30’ dispersion onto greens, the exact location of the pin became FAR less important.
Two screenshots below:
Front pin @ 124. With a 30’ dispersion, a good target is 131.
Back pin @ 140. Target distance becomes 135.

I’ve used a rangefinder for about 12 years
For the last year I added Shot Scope GPS to get data on my game
My rangefinder packed in a couple of months ago so been solely using GPS since. Have to say I haven’t missed it and don’t intend on replacing it
I thought I’d still want
In the past month we’ve:
✅ Signed our first Division 1 golf team
✅ Had a pro tell us the app helped him win an event on a course he’d never seen before
✅ Fielded multiple calls and e-mails from some of golf’s top influencers with interest in working together
✅ Been
Extended target line just went live!
The dashed target line now extends past the aim point to make it easier to mark your exact line using far away markers (like the right edge of the distant bunker here.)
To use this feature, you’ll have to turn it on in your settings.
We’ve sponsored our first professional golfer! And you’re not going to believe who it is…
Rob Hogan is a multiple time speed golf world champion and was featured in Golf Digest by
@LukeKerrDineen
in March.
And now, he’s using Shot Pattern to prepare in true Rob Hogan style.
One of our D1 golf clients asked us to extend the target line beyond the aimpoint so that it's easier to use far away markers (like buildings, towers, tall trees, etc.) to dial in the target line.
Will you be toggling this feature on in your settings?
Warning: this might bend your brain a little…
Your irons don’t go one specific number on a full swing. They cover a range. And we should use a *range* not a singular number, as we select our club.
I’ve never seen this visualized clearly until the latest Shot Pattern update 👇🏼
Make the most of your launch monitor sessions‼️
1️⃣ Hit 10 shots with your driver. Maximum focus on hitting it on the target line.
🔁 Repeat with all other clubs you use off the tee.
⬆️ Upload your data to Shot Pattern
🤯 See those drives on any hole in the world.
@LouStagner
There are currently 81 players on the PGA Tour averaging better than 20’ from 100-125 in the fairway. Tour Average 20’7”. From 75-100 the Tour Average is 18’. So, for a tour player, the math is darn close to equal outcomes (it’s almost like you looked it up before this post! 🤪).
Been working with some Arccos users to understand their dispersion off the tee with various clubs. Some interesting finds so far!

Closest guess wins a free year of Shot Pattern!
I just sent DMs to a handful of people who are getting early access to our HUGE update dropping next week so that they can provide feedback.
If you want to test out our new stat entry mode and get access to shot by shot strokes gained info, just comment or DM to apply.
I created Shot Pattern because I needed to solve two problems:
1) None of the apps let me measure sideways so that I could quickly measure how far to aim away from hazards.
2) I needed to know *MY* dispersion size, not a Tour pros.
The result turned out pretty good... 🤩
It’s so easy to play “Golf Swing” when hitting on the launch monitor, and end up wasting time trying 20 different feels while not getting better.
Try this instead: focus on your side offline number. 👇🏼
Hit fairway challenge: Keep the number under 50’
GIR Challenge: Under 30’
Enter every shot from your round - including club and taget data - in a way that’s fast, easy, and doesn’t make it a chore to record your stats.
Coming soon to Shot Pattern
Behind the scenes of some awesome stuff we're cooking up for you! Coming soon...
Track, See, and Share every shot in your round.
Coaches are going to love seeing the targets their player selected!
Add and tag every club in your bag.
Now all shots can be associated with a club.

5% rule says anything inside 25’ is a good shot.
Here’s a 30-foot circle, shifted a few yards long of pin high because of the water.
Still plenty of time to make birdies! This par 3 is not the time to try to force one.
Just holed out for eagle from 55 yards on 18 to tie for the win!!!
How do we inform the haters in
@LouStagner
‘s replies who were insisting earlier today that being 95 yards away would be better?
The simple act of measuring the fairway / safe landing area on every hole teaches you how to play smarter golf.
Played with a couple single digit handicaps yesterday who were ADAMANT this hole required driver.
Trying to squeeze driver into a <20-yard wide fairway with water
The PGA was electric today!
I’m still hung up on Tosti driving 13 green and how the announcers kept acting like it was a viable play.
Here’s a side by side of 13 green vs 17 at Sawgrass. 30’ radius circle on each.
Imagine trying to hit a 320 yard drive onto 17 at Sawgrass!

Apparently treating this first LIV event like your coworker who was a last minute invite to the charity scramble.
“Well, geez. I haven’t swung a club in while, but yeah, sounds fun. I’m in.”
@DoerflerJared
What do you expect for the growth of a golf gps + strategy app that allows players to upload data from their launch monitor to see their dispersion mapped onto any course and predict strokes gained? 👀
I love studying tee shots.
You just can’t win at this game if you’re taking penalties off the tee. It’s gotta be in play.
The biggest shock of building this app was finding out just how far *I* had to aim away from trouble to make that happen.
Do you know your answer?
A quick look at number 12.
Left side: my approach dispersion going straight at the Sunday pin. 🤢
Right side: my approach dispersion just trying to find a place to catch max GIRs and stay dry. 😎
Recorded these shots at an indoor facility on TrackMan and uploaded to the app
At Shot Pattern we’re building the best golf GPS, strategy and data tool we can imagine.
The app is approaching 6 months since launch and the feedback and suggestions from all of you has been incredible!! Thanks for helping us build this.
We’ve got lots more coming.
If we hired one of the best storytellers in golf, and a phenomenal production crew, and got one of the games great strategy experts to create a video for how
@ShotPattern
can help you score better, this video would have been the dream outcome.
Brilliant,
@LukeKerrDineen

Oh my! Tantalizing tee shot for the big hitters out there!
18-hole stroke play tournament. Pays one place.

I’ve cracked the code on

The consistency number at the bottom of the report (circled) shows the standard deviation for the data set… except on the Side and Side Total metrics, the number appears to represent a proprietary
👀 Making progress on full round shot entry and stat tracking!
Open to your feedback if you want to drop a comment. Hopefully calling for testers relatively soon.
Awesome to see
@practicalgolf
bounce back with a couple birdies after a less than ideal start. Hard to imagine the birdie on 15 was anything other than a full send off the tee toward right green side bunker.
USGA doesn’t do shot by shot, so I’m here being a total sicko pulling
How to dominate strokes gained off the tee:
Be long enough with your driver that you can gain strokes, even when you miss the fairway.
For those trying to get to scratch this means you want to carry it 260+

So excited to share this next update with all of you and all that’s to come this year.
Happy new year, golf addicts!! 🥳 🎉🎊
In 2023 we got messages from the top 1% of players saying they were loving the app, but one thing was missing: a compass.
Most players who are new to competitive golf might be surprised about how crucial this feature is to the game’s best. Swipe to see why.

Opening tee shot tomorrow. What would you do?
3-wood on left. Driver on right.
Important thing to consider is that if you drive the ball pin high but don’t hit the green, you’re guaranteed to be short-sided. The green is only 8 paces wide.
Take a look at 16!
A 300 yard drive is going to leave you about ~215 to the hole. From this distance, average proximity on Tour is ~45 feet.
Look at the difference in margin for error if you shift your target away from the pin!

One of the coolest parts of the Shot Pattern app is that we can spit out some really useful numbers (like the width of the area where we predict 95% of your shots will fall within).
But it can be hard to play enough golf to record that data.
No more! We added a manual stat

These are the kinds of holes where smart players with knowledge of their shot dispersion pick up a massive advantage.
When there’s a penalty on one side and a bail out area to the other, you can 💣 away with confidence when you know just where to aim to take trouble out of play.
This is an example of a hole where far too many players hit into the water...
...because they pick targets that are too close to the water.
Sometimes your target should be in the rough!
Important note:
Target is where you want the ball to FINISH.
Scott Fawcett took course management and strategy to a new level with his ideas. Total game changer.

You mean like this? Where we plot *your* dispersion data points (with ability to upload launch monitor data to quickly build out your dispersion) and show you anticipated strokes gained as you move your target?
@ShotPattern
This is a very good visual but as you will know more so than me, shot patterns are not a nice circle like this. Can your shot pattern be more personal and then overlayed onto the greens as you have done here. That then would make the visual that much more personal.
Plenty of work left to do on v1 of our round entry mode, but it’s coming along! Excited for users to be able to track full rounds and get strokes gained insights!
Will be looking for testers soon!

We gained some new followers today. Hi! Let's make sure you know what the Shot Pattern app is all about and how to use it.
For starters, Shot Pattern exists because we hated that the existing GPS apps made it so hard to measure the width of the target areas up ahead.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but using a green map to plan your approach shot is a waste of time for just about every amateur.
You don’t need to be on a certain portion of the green based on 2% differences in slope.
You just want to be on the green.
Period.

@LukeKerrDineen
Was just about to agree! Then decided to look it up.
Given his length, it might be better than it first appears. Here’s a 65-yard wide dispersion @ 310.
Don’t know his actual dispersion or if this matches his intended target, but it’s probably in the ballpark.
Super grateful for the opportunity to share some learnings with all the indies out there who use (or are considering)

Thanks for reaching out!
Indie developer Eric Duffett launched his golf strategy GPS app,
@ShotPattern
, as a passion project. Four months later, someone offered to buy it. Here's why he didn't sell.
@LouStagner
Drew a circle around left rough so that any shot finishing pin high left would be assumed to be in the water.
Given the shot pattern, aiming just a couple yards right maximizes strokes gained for me.
Would love to have > 100 shots of data, though. To then launch monitor we go!
Results are in!
I didn’t dig through the detailed ShotLink data, but to my eyes, the pattern seems to be centered around that 5-wood shot where the landing area is widest. (Red line.)
