Guess which medical school in East Texas has an ACGME Neurology residency program? ;-)
New job alert: Chief of Neurology/Residency Program Director @ UT Health Sciences Center, Tyler, TX (only 2 hrs away from Dallas). New med school opens in August; exciting to build new depts & programs. Grateful to all my amazing mentors for getting me here.
@MichaelOkun
Trying to figure out how to be helpful to deserving FMGs who want to apply for residency spots in the US. The pandemic has closed rotations and observerships. Research positions are few. USMLE scores are imp but so is US clinical experience. Thoughts?
Come October, I get to step into some heavy shoes.
Director: MDS LEAP program. Inspired by none other than
@CindyComella
Hoping to work hard, learn and grow the program.
Shout out for amazing mentors!
I am very fortunate to have found so many people who care about me. This thought was reinforced at the AAN annual meeting with so many people reaching out to me just to see me. I thank you, you know who you are and I am grateful for your generosity of spirit.

For all medical professionals, please try to educate yourself about functional neurological disorders. All of us will see these patients, the earlier we diagnose them, counsel them and put them on a path to recovery, the better their chances are of recovery.
@FNDSociety
@UTTyler
Happy to find out that I got selected into the membership of AUPN (association of University Professors of Neurology). Got appointed by the Dean of the medical school to be Chair of promotions & tenure committee of the school of medicine. Important responsibilities, grateful.
Functional neurological disorders is a huge area of learning, no one can know it all but I am happy about my clinical skillset in diagnosis & planning treatment, teaching others & supporting unfortunate patients with real needs!

Hated to miss AANAM this year after two years of a hiatus. Love Seattle and can't wait to visit again. Especially excited about winning the fellowship director award alongside

(residency director). Time to retire now!!

Building an academic career is HARD! In the end it is all about what you want to do and where you want to go. You need the right mentorship, direction and focus. Balancing this with family, health and fun activities is really important. It's all about time management and passion!
Academic careers are very gratifying but also realize that they are very demanding. Clinical care is never the % you sign up for, research is unpredictable, teaching and mentoring is fun. Love academics!! For young people, go into academics only for the love of it!
#stress
It does not matter how smart you are, if you do not have the time to counsel your patients adequately and educate them, they will not take best care of themselves. I ponder how one can do the best job in a 15-20 minute follow up visit???

Happy and proud to be appointed adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern medical center. This will allow me to be an integral part of the FND program that we have painstakingly built and colloborate with

Amazing learning at the FND Society meeting in Verona. So many pearls and great tips. The agenda is so comprehensive and covers all aspects of FND. Great to see some great colleagues.
Ignorance about FND even amongst Neurologists is so sad and appalling. There is so much science behind it now, why don't people want to learn. Diagnosing these patients appropriately and setting them up for success is so critical. Our health system would not be so overwhelmed.
When a mentee becomes a peer mentor! She was my resident and fellow. I have loved, supported & mentored her over the years. She is brilliant, humble & dedicated. I run to her with my queries now. So proud of my wonderful Svjetlana Miocinovic, teaching fellow's lecture last night!
After a really long night without sleep I just came to the hotel, packed and left for London. Amazing MDS Congress after 2 years hiatus. Great to see friends from far and near.
New additions to the board of Directors of the FND Society! Humbled and honored. Shout out to
@SanjayP30043502
for what an amazing person and professional he is.
Very proud of my MDS-LEAP class of 2021! Was really excited to be able to conduct graduation in person with so many graduates, Presidents and attendees.

I am convinced that when I no longer work for money, I am going to start a non-profit website and help people with unexplained medical illnesses. Some may be organic and some functional. There is nothing worse than an undiagnosed & untreated patient!!
Mov Dis Fellowship directors need to be aware that institutions may not support a J1 visa for FMGs. The VA system will also likely not support J1 visa applicants. This is a HUGE problem as a decent chunk of aspirants are very good FMGs. The dialogue needs to begin now!
Grateful for successful completion of the new format MDS LEAP basic course. Congratulations to the faculty, participants and MDS secretariat (Kate Rudolph/Annette Schott/Jennie Socha) and all the MDS leaders/presidents who participated in the panel.
Take home message: getting good sleep is important for optimal brain health!!
Exercise: aerobics and weight training. Skeletal muscle building.
Good diet.
Avoiding metabolic syndrome: DM, HTN, obesity.

Check out my talk on "Navigating an academic career": accolades and challenges in the ELA session on Sunday 4/18/2021. It's a lot of information condensed in 30 minutes but a great blueprint for anyone with an academic interest. Email me with questions!
I want to put in a plug for two of the most prominent educators and mentors in our field who have launched many a career! They are selfless, committed, insightful, benevolent and effective. Without them, many of us would be still lost and wandering.

Proud of this kid who has demonstrated so much psychological hardiness and strength in light of health adversities over 7 long years. Still continues to be kind, empathic, bright and witty.
I am happy to set up a webinar to address concerns of FMGs and to discuss ways and means to help deserving candidates meet the promise of their lives. I will be happy to include some awesome FMGs who are successful in the US.

So gratifying to see so many of my UT Tyler FND patients much improved and some well on their way to recovery. It is one of the most gratifying things I do as a Physician. Happy faces and smiles are great to see after tears and despair initially. We need more trained personnel.
What a wonderfully successful day # 1 of the new and improvised MDS LEAP basic program. Inspiring lectures by amazing faculty. Look forward to day # 2.
Good will and connections/engagement will get a lot of things done. So many leaders totally miss out on this element. Our faculty are our best asset, why aren't they treated with the respect and kindness they deserve along with fair compensation?
After building connections for 17 long years in one job, having to move and find new connections seemed hard. Seven months later, I am so happy to have found the right kind of people at UT Tyler SOM. Building new educational & clinical programs is so much fun.

Recruiting heavily for qualified neurologists in all specialties at UT Health East Texas in Tyler, Texas. All interested send me a message. An amazing opportunity to build the future of Neurology in an underserved population with tremendous potential. Thanks.
End of an era! Sad day for Neurology all over but especially for Columbia. Blair Ford (legend) dies. A valiant fight against a horrible, incurable enemy. What an inspiration for all of us. We will remember you!! Rest In Peace sir. Tip my hat to you.
Taking care of patients with neurodegenerative disorders is a privilege & honor, these are long-lasting relationships. Really hurts when a patient is doing badly. We have to do all we can to alleviate suffering! Please don't forget palliative care in these situations.
Everyone out there looking for jobs: even if you are not interested when you get an email inquiring about your interest in positions, it is professionally appropriate to write a short email even if it is denial. Neurology is a small world & word gets around. Just saying...!
Open forum: all are welcome.

Excited to be doing more in the FND space. I am happy to join Edu committee of the FNDS & also serve on the board of FND Hope, USA. I am putting together a nice group of people at UT Tyler School of Medicine for FND as I did 5 years ago at UTSW. Grand Rounds tomorrow on FND.
UT Tyler Neurology residency program will be ready to accept residency application this fall with the PGY-2 start date of July 1, 2025. Not taking any residents starting this July. Just FYI.
I can't overemphasize the importance of great training to build the foundation of a great career. One has to be thoughtful to recognize what one really wants to do and then find the right institution, mentors, resources for training.

Happy International Women's day! More power to this amazing group of women jump starting the MDS LEAP Basics program this morning. May our tribe continue to grow and do amazing things for ourselves and the next generation.
Professional connectedness: follow a professional code of conduct for responding to communications and doing what one said they would do. Give a time frame & keep it. Unresponsiveness: unprofessional conduct!

A patient needs to know what they "do have", not what they "do not have"!! Helping a patient to find A diagnosis is the least we can do. Which also means disavowing them of their abnormal perceptions and beliefs!! Loving my FND journey!

25 years since I defended my PhD. thesis at Tulane University. What an amazing advisory team I had; Dr. Agrawal, Dr. Morris, Dr. Fisher, Dr. George & Dr. Roberts. With the tools available now (adobe etc), I could have saved time & completed in less time but productive 5.5 years!
What a wonderfully successful day # 1 of the new and improvised MDS LEAP basic program. Inspiring lectures by amazing faculty. Look forward to day # 2.

Spent 35 min speaking with an MD trying to convince them that FNDs are truly neurological disorders & not all mental (as they called it). At the end of it, he said he was going to deny the patient's claim. WT*!!! We have to fight this battle hard for our patients.

How do we educate insurance & disability companies so that they do not cancel coverage for FND/FMD patients?? These patients need the support while they are learning & undergoing treatment which could take a year or more. With loss of coverage, these patients have nothing left!!!
