UT Austin goes from firing staff to arresting students in a span of a month. This is just showing that institution is not a safe place for all and does not foster a sense of belonging... Truly a shame.
The "pendulum swinging" concept is wild to think about in a larger reflection of this year.
2020 was the year of "racial reckoning" and "social justice" and just 3 years later, all of that is undone with anti-CRT and -DEI legislation. Only 3 years.
I've debated on whether I want to
#shoutmyabortion
but I think it's important. At the age of 22 in the state of Oklahoma, I did not want to be a mother. I came from a single teenage parent and I know my mother had a hard time making ends meet. (1/x)
We'll get an apology from
@OUPanhellenic
and
@OUTriDelta
and they'll say that they'll fix it and it'll never happen again.... But white supremacy is pervasive and you can't apologize it away. So that's why these "incidents" always happen... Because they'll never learn.
A cool exhibition on UT Austin's campus celebrating the Precursors or the first group of Black students at UT Austin. I haven't had a moment to look at it for long but glad it's here:
Good morning, Twitter community!
Based on the state politics in Texas: , I am actively searching for a new job and seeking roles in higher education, consulting, or non-profit work in either an assistant director, associate director, or director roles.
SB 17 has taken away so much that I cannot fathom right now. Our jobs, our values.... There's so much hurt that I cannot personally and professionally articulate right now.
A little history lesson: DDCE, or DCCE, is/was almost 20 years old. So for state politics, like SB 17, to dismantle this fixture at an institution is shameful.
I'm so proud of UT Austin students for drafting a letter for the UT community to sign out their behalf. Please take time to sign it to let UT's administration understand the impact of the layoffs:
My heart goes out to the Black and Brown students at the University of Oklahoma. It's definitely a sad day to know the adminstration is failing to acknowledge their racism and continue to let Black students suffer. As a higher ed professional, I'm disappointed.

Thanks to
@jasekugiya
for the pictures! Testifying is probably the scariest thing I've done (and I've done a lot of scary things) but it needed to be done. 👏🏾
The attack on higher education is like burning the candle at both ends of the stick. The laws are trying to keep marginalized communities from getting recruited and admitted into institutions and not wanting these folks to be retained at the institution... (1/2)
I never thought that my research would be so timely as I plan to discuss how university presidents' commitment to DEI may inform their leadership... But here I am 🤷🏿♀️
I didn't expect to be in the
@chronicle
in this way but I'm happy that it was published to highlight how anti-DEI legislation has been so harmful to higher ed practitioners and communities.
After waiting (impatiently 😅), my article is finally ready to be read in
@GPCjournal
! I was drafting another copy of this article after Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland were murdered and their deaths struck a nerve in me...(1/x)
Without that choice of having an abortion, I wouldn't know where I would be. I stand with all people who need access to abortion and will always be of support for anyone who needs it.

This year, I'm attending
@NASPAtweets
to talk about my experience navigating a racial incident at my alma mater but realizing how that incident made me passionate about authentic DEI values in my current and previous roles at the University of Texas at Austin. (1/2)
I'm livid that Texas failed to prepare for ANOTHER winter storm. And there are folks, including myself, without power. All of the preparation that could have happened but DIDN'T. 😒
Receiving an honor this morning was not on my task list but it really warmed my heart to see this happen in
@UT_SG
! Thank y'all so much as the work you do is so impactful, important, and needed and I'm just happy to be in support where I can 🥹🤘🏾⭐
I feel so much right now all at once. As someone who has been poured into by DEI office and poured back into others working as a DEI professional... This is all hurts and it's frustrating. So I'll feel all of the feelings right now.
Here to share good news! I'm going to travel this semester and I've been accepted to attend
@NASPAtweets
this Spring! Looking forward to being in Boston for April -- If y'all have any recommendations for coffee, food and fun, send them my way!

So I made the choice that I couldn't be a good parent to an infant because I could barely support myself at the time and nonetheless a child. And being a parent at 21/22 was not of interest at that time. (2/x)
I saw this memory show up in my Facebook memories from 2 years ago. When I received my acceptance letter for my PhD program, it was such a surreal feeling and now, in the midst of it, I'll have about 2ish years until I'm finished. Where has time gone?

The disappointment in our House HE Higher Committee Reps cannot be articulated in 140 characters but just know if
#SB17
and
#SB18
, Texas is not going to be a place where staff, faculty and students are going to invest in. Shame on...

#SB17
, if it passes, is going to ruin the infrastructure of Texas institution. From Living Learning Communities to research labs to admissions to grant funds. Folks have to realize it's more than just DEI offices, it'll chill ALL of campus programming and functions.
Based on my academic research, DEI programs cost about 1% of the institutions' budget, so I think he'll need to start there as most programs struggle for money to begin with:
NOW:
@JCHartzell
told
@UTAustin
staff at a Staff Council meeting that the recent post-SB 17 program and staff cuts, including unspecified “fringe” cuts, amounts to about $10 million that the university will now redirect to teaching and research.

#SB18
. If the
#txlege
passes these bills, it will have a great impact on Texas Higher Education and the reputation of Texas institutions. I hope the House Higher Ed Committee let these bills die.
I had the amazing opportunity to chat about all of the different hats I wear: from working in higher education navigating anti-DEI laws, being a
@TADOHE2
co-president, & as a part-time PhD student focusing my research on DEI! Check out the this episode! Thank y'all for having me!
Tomorrow is when the House Higher Education Committee is going to hear

. Diversity, equity, and inclusion may be my full-time job but it is the reason why I became interested in this type of role in higher education. As a first-gen, Black woman from a working 1/x
The time that I'm proud of the University of Oklahoma is when I see wonderful educators such as
@Melli75
,
@TheRealDrRodB
, and
@suzettegrillot
speak up and support for students of color. Thank y'all! 👏🏾👏🏾
It's been exhausting trying to get
#txlege
to understand the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion work and tenure, I'll continue my own little fight and send them emails as they review

We are back at the capitol to fight for transgender Texans. They want to shake our movement, but we will never abandon this fight.
#SB14
is on the

house floor today.
Have you taken action?
I need some Texas alumni to call their presidents and left them know how their support will change, especially due to the legislature impacting higher education. Apply the pressure there!

Today, I finished my first keynote as
@TADOHE2
Co-President with the MACE Fund () and it was amazing time to chat about SB 17 and student advocacy & organizing. So happy that I share my activist experience and passionate for DEI.

Well, this is complicated for university staff members because how does testifying before the lege as a staff member affect our jobs? If they cared about this perspective, they would have made this person an invited testimony.
@UTAustin
.
@PhilKingTX
asks if anyone who works for a Texas university or a DEI office who can speak on what they do will be testifying.
The answer is a bit unclear. The subcommittee didn't invite anyone who works for a DEI office to speak and no one on the subcommittee answered.
Very excited to be the incoming 2021-22 Membership and Community Engagement chair for
@TexasBFSA
! I'm excited for all new ideas that I hope to implement! 🙌🏿🥳
I wish Creighton would understand the amount of work and limited budgets that DEI offices navigate to help students even consider UT or any Texas institution, to survive being "the only one" in most of their classes, and then help them graduate.

Happy to have attended
#SXSWEdu
for the second time! And I'm at my last session for the day, but happy to receive helpful information from amazing presenters!
My phrase for 2023 will be "slow down." We're resting. We're pausing for a second. We're saying "give me a moment and I'll get back to you." We finding comfort when we need it. ✨
My therapist really affirmed all of my feelings this morning. We're slowing down this week: yoga, meditation, journaling, and hot drinks to move through today.
For those who couldn't attend

and didn't catch the livestream, you can catch my SA Story and the other stories shared here:
I start around 41 minutes into the video!
UT organizers are collecting responses from individuals who have been impacted by SB 17. Share your testimonies via this Qualtrics form that will be read during the interim subcommittee session tomorrow, May 14th. Responses are anonymous!
It's officially my last week in the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT Austin and I'm happy to announce that I will soon be starting a new position in

apparently want to "stop the indoctrination happening at TX institutions bc of DEI offices" and yet, at UT Austin, they approved the Civitas Institution or the Liberty Institute, after the rebrand, to start teaching the students...
I sent my family my thesis and I was something I am proud of, like they get insight of what I've been doing the past two years. I remember my first of my Master's I wanted to do that for them.
I spoke about it in the keynote I did but I'm really sitting with it more deeply... Will we witness social change?
I have no answers just more questions 🤷🏾♀️
After a whole year working with
@TADOHE2
. as their VP of Student Development, I am thrilled to announce that I will be the co-president with my wonderful co-president, Florencio Urías Aranda III, M.A., M.S., M.L.S., Ph.D. for 2023 - 2025. (1/2)
For my research studying Black women faculty at an university... There's only 57 Black women faculty (including nontenured, tenure track, and tenured) out of 3162 faculty members, nontenured, tenure track and tenured.
Sending all of my energy and positivity to the folks physically present at the Capitol to testify against
#SB17
and
#SB18
. It's such an evil tactic for the
#txlege
to make this day so long for folks using their rights as a citizen to share their voices. ✊🏿
You know, after my class yesterday, I am reminded that I am okay with not knowing everything and I won't pretend to know everything. Hence, I'm going to office hours because I am confused. 😵

Closing out the semester with the TADOHE . Summer Summit was really one for the books! I am so honored to work alongside amazing diversity, equity, and inclusion advocates in the state of Texas. While we are working in a hostile in environment for the work that we do...
