Cat and Mouse. Great battle between Darren McCurry and Chrissy McKaigue. Lots to learn here for inside forwards and full back line. Evasion movements, scanning and 1v1 defending.
Conor McGregor, his shitty stout and whiskey should not be given any publicity again by the media in Ireland. His influence has only incited this violence on the streets tonight. Anyone associated with him should be ashamed of themselves.
Please sort out the charging rule
@LadiesFootball
Will turn people away from watching the game. Not sure what player in possession is supposed to do here, the rule rewards bad tackling technique.
I've done a lot of thinking about the Gaelic football calendar/tiered championship so I've put together a proposal that links the league & championship. Everyone gets a minimum of 7 championship games and an equal chance of competing for All Ireland. Any thoughts are welcome.
Dublin kickout, great view on
@GAA_BEO
. No player within the Dublin 45m line and all players on the pitch between the width of the two goalposts. I imagine this is a goalkeeper's dream for chipping into space
#GAA
Between the linesperson and referee they gave a yellow to Vikki Wall for this. She was running forward at pace with 2 minutes to go as her team were down by a point. In the men's game this would be a black card for the Dublin player.
I'm delighted to have passed my PhD Viva today. 4 years and 7 published papers later. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of my supervisors, collaborators and family. Nice early birthday present too before I turn 27 next week!

This is absolutely scandalous. Yes Dublin probably would have won the game. Yes it would have been a free in. But to allow this stand, the referee shouldn't be given another game in the championship.
Wow. That's a yellow card in rugby, yet a free to the defending team in
@LadiesFootball
. Every week there is multiple instances like this. Change the rule now before more people get hurt.
If watching the
@DubGAAOfficial
SF1 final this Sunday, watch out for these diagonal runs from Eoin Murchan. Good clip to show players - What is the advantage of this method of transitioning the ball over kicking the ball to the same area?
Videoing training is a useful tool for identifying habits in players that you might not spot in real time, reinforcing that skill execution is important in training not just matches & most importantly inflating my ego when I have to step in to keep a drill going 🤣

Nice feeling to get this printed & handed in last week. 296 pages. 5 years of a postgraduate journey. After 23 consecutive years in the education system I'm no longer a student! Graduation online will be strange. Thanks to all in

This is extremely tone deaf
@JacobSteinberg
and disappointing to see the article framed this way. 20 people were offended versus others speaking up about 30,000 people being killed. I would much rather my club facilitate a rally like this than discourage it.
The IRFU are looking for an intern with a minimum of a BSc in Sport Science to work 40 hours a week for 6 months for no wage... From a company who’s total income was €77m in the last financial year. Unpaid internships like this are hugely damaging for sport science in Ireland!
Yesterday I graduated with a PhD (remotely). Quite an odd experience graduating this way but fair play to
@CIT_ie
for putting this ceremony on and giving graduates something to celebrate (quietly at home) at this time!
This Gaelic football training game is 130% of Match Demands for High-Speed Running. Players will average 5 possessions per minute (versus 0.25 per minute in a 15v15 match). Add 2 goals at either end or use endzone if players stand blocking infront of goals. For 4v4 go to 60x20m.
On the 60x20m pitch players hit 117% of the relative high-speed running demands of an inter county player & 131% of the relative high-speed running demands of a club player✅. The frequency of technical actions are much higher in the SSGs versus match-play✅. Avg % HR Max: 86%✅
Great to have my latest PhD paper accepted for publication today in the International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport. We analysed the physical, physiological and technical performance of Gaelic football players during 4v4 4 minute SSGs on 3 different pitch sizes.

I noticed Armagh calling this set play a few times against Roscommon - hand up in the air was a signal for players to push up the pitch & get narrow. The footage from

shows the signals and pushing up. My behind goal footage shows the narrow formation. Set play for a mark?
Great win today with

Hat tip to
@lonesharkoy
for pointing out this comic. Uncanny. All those intercounty players who travel 2-3 hours to train twice a week in cars they bought themselves, the lads who take 1/2 days off work to go to away games. All they have to do is to sacrifice more and work harder
Ethan Rafferty,
#Armagh
goalkeeper, got 2 points from play & won a score-able free on Sunday. Having a keeper who can contribute to open play makes sense, it gives you a 15v14 advantage. Short video showing how Armagh made the most of that advantage.

Something needs to be done about who is allowed on the sideline at inter county matches. The Offaly Maor Uisce punched one of the Meath players mid way through the second half and was allowed to stay on the sideline for the rest of the match 🤷
Drills get a bad name but can be as good as a game when they are;
✅Under Pressure,
✅Involve Decision Making,
✅Similar to a Match Scenario

Lose the kickout battle, you normally lose the game. Dublin got 12 of 18 1st half scores v Meath from kickout possessions. 7 from their own & 5 from Meath’s kickouts. Meath allowed Dublin to win ball short but then didn’t know how to press in play, leaving their backs exposed.
Over 145k views on this video of Kerry Intermediate championship. Unfortunately Meath GAA don't see any value in streaming games. Imagine the views on Ratoath's last minute goal. Missing out on a revenue stream and most importantly exposure.

A mistake I often see is practicing attacking/defensive organisation (backs & forwards) with 6v6 in their traditional positions. How often in a game does that happen? (Hint:Twice). Better to start where players are likely to be based on your principles of play

What a pathetic response from the IRFU. They tried to abuse their power to get someone to work for free then when they were called out on it, they don’t have the dignity to admit what they did was wrong. The part about them not having any unpaid internships is nonsense too!!
In addition to atmosphere. Dublin have had home adv in Leinster SFs for the past 26 years. Croke Park is not a neutral venue for Dublin. Meath have played more competitive games in Parnell Park in the past 12 years than Dublin have. Fairness has to come into it too
@gaaleinster
The last Leinster football semi final double header in Croke Park pre-covid in 2019 - Dublin v Kildare & Meath v Laois was attended by 36,000 people. Two semi finals in O'Moore Park/O'Connor Park/Nowlan Park could fit up to 49,000. Would make for a much better atmosphere.

I get a lot of questions about what stats club teams should be taking during matches. There is no magic answer that fits all teams. The best advice I can give is to follow these basic principles.
#GAA
Players visualise better on full pitches compared to SSGs. E.g. you may want your team to kick the ball in transition from/to certain areas. You may not have numbers for a full pitch game so break the move into 2 parts with smaller numbers. 9v9 or 8v8 works for this principle

Revised edition. Inter-county season shortened. NFL linked to championship. Provincial retained but shorter. Min 4 championship games for all. Provinces get cut of group & last 16 tickets. Midweek games=more TV revenue. 202 matches v current 184 matches. Clubs have fixed schedule
Rather than doing a linear kick passing drill after a warm up, use a 5v3 or 5v2 to practice decision making, movement, scanning, and skill execution under pressure. There might be more mistakes initially but it will lead to longer-term improvements.

I'm a big fan of LSGs in warm ups. In Championship you might have 20-30 players togged out & only half a pitch to warm up. Many teams will do separate activities with starters & subs. This game mixes an SSG with a LSG to include all. Change rules to suit principles of play

Defence to Attack SSG. 2 channels along sidelines - team in possession has to have 2 players in each channel at anytime - promotes width. The defending team can only have 1 player in a channel - promotes communication when ball is switched. Ball is delivered to 2v2 in endzone 1/2
