@manofnoproperty @TOR_EuroCon He made some early (August 1914) comments which seemed similar to Lenin's view, but he didn't act on it. He then was gung-ho for a German victory from a socialist perspective, and this was entirely coherent at the time. He followed the same path of the war socialists, not Lenin.

@manofnoproperty @TOR_EuroCon A slogan aside, his wartime writings were immensely favourable to Germany - borne out of a sincere belief that the German state was approaching socialism. This was totally different to Lenin's analysis of the war. Connolly and Lenin were on very different tracks.

@manofnoproperty @TOR_EuroCon He didn't take the Leninist view of seeing the war as senseless inter-imperialist carnage. He actively wanted Germany to win in the interests of socialism, not just tactical expedience for Irish nationalist reasons.

@manofnoproperty @TOR_EuroCon He had been a Marxist and I've never seen evidence he abandoned or denounced Marxism, but he evolved in a direction that was the opposite to burgeoning Leninism in 1914-16. Pilsudski is his closest parallel, whom Connolly respected.

@manofnoproperty @TOR_EuroCon Connolly was following the same path as the European war socialists by allying with the progressive national bourgeois and launching his own national liberation war. He was also very pro-Germany in WW1.
