Geographic differences in acoustic signals may provide a line of evidence for population-level discrimination in some species, investigated here for Blainville’s beaked whales. @Scripps_AEL, @Scripps_MBARC, @NOAAFish_PIFSC

New article on our recent paper showing impact of ultrasonic antifouling noise on Cuvier's beaked whales at Guadalupe Island, Mexico. These devices are increasingly installed to keep ship hulls clean, popular on cruise ships, but use is not controlled.

Meet the night crew! Our collaborator Joe Warren (@Warren_Lab) and a team of @Scripps_AEL grad students went nocturnal to collect deep-sea specimens and eDNA at our acoustic monitoring sites. The data they processed will help us better understand the ecology of this region!

Our new paper highlights an overlooked (and unregulated!) source of noise in the oceans. Ultrasonic antifouling technology has become increasingly pervasive worldwide, but we have now documented that it can be an acoustic disturbance to marine life.
