On a sunny afternoon, a man pauses in a churchyard to remember his wife. He has visited every day since she passed. Earlier he politely asked, "May I join you?" as I sat on a bench, enjoying the sunshine. Little did I know I was about to have an extraordinary conversation... 🧵⬇️
It was a lovely reminder that even the most unassuming man, on his daily walk along the country lanes to the churchyard, has lived a rich life and has amazing stories to tell 😇
I found myself sat talking to Dr CH Fry, international ornithologist, and author of several books 📚 including the Poyser book 'The Bee-eaters', co-author (with his wife) of 'Kingfishers, Bee-eaters and Rollers' and one of lead authors on the series 'The Birds of Africa'...
After I noticed a Goldcrest in the Yew tree, he remarked how with age they are a species he now struggles to see and hear. As we chatted more, it quickly became clear he was a lover of birds, and knew a great deal...
Out cleaning the

hides today with the volunteers ready to reopen tomorrow. Realised that the debris in the Decoy Hide was mainly discarded moth wings, left over from bats hanging here at night to feed on larger species

Joined by a friendly Jackdaw this lunchtime. Managed to read

ring ET82800, quick check online revealed bird was ringed as a chick in May 2001! Another check and appears it's a new longevity record for species,19+ years, beating previous record by over a year! 📸
@birdingfox
Never did I expect to find a corner of a small pond at over 700m up a fell, full of breeding Common Frog! 🐸 Wouldn't be an exaggeration to say hundreds of people probably walked past today and never even noticed them
Not what I expected to find in the

swan pipe this morning! At least 11 newly hatched and tightly packed Mallard ducklings, with 3 unhatched eggs left behind this afternoon

Rescued from the tyre tracks
@slimbridge_wild
this morning, a Skylark that's not quite fledged yet. Safely returned to the longer grass, and hopefully getting airborne soon
Big THANK YOU to the TWAT 🤬 who decided it would be nice to fly over a legally protected site, well below the height limit, and flush birds from the entire reserve. Top job. Definitely not following the new Paramotor Code👍🤦
The lights are going out on another
@slimbridge_wild
swan season. Our Bewick's are getting ready to return to Russia. A few more days and they'll be gone, and we hope that'll they'll return for many winters to come
Sitting in the dappled shade amongst the wildflowers growing in the cemetery, under a warm clear blue sky, finally crossing something off my bucket list... Not a bad way to celebrate my birthday. Wild Hamster 🐹 in Vienna 🇦🇹✅️
Britain is internationally important for wintering birds, estimated to host 12.8 million individual waterbirds each season. They rely on our wetlands and us working together to protect them

On the late feed tonight. The Centre may have closed early to visitors but the birds still expect their supper. Merry Christmas from the Rushy to all, and to all a good night...

'Tis the season 🎄 Tree rehomed from a reserve where it shouldn't have been growing. A bit of browsing damage from deer, looks a bit sorry for itself, but now decorated and festive, it makes me smile everytime 😁
Exploring the wilds of Cumbria today, discovering a couple of 'my' new

Haha, the sneaky b... 😅
Couldn't have asked for a better duo to work with. This pair are true conservation heroes. Dedicated, unstoppable and inspiring. We've been the perfect combination, and built an amazing team of volunteers. Very sad to leave, but new challenges ahead
This week, we say farewell to a very special someone. 👋🦆
Good luck to our Reserve Warden, Scott on his next adventure; thank you for all you do for wetlands and wildlife. We will miss you very much!

Real reason I came to Cumbrian Solway coast was to search Kirkbride area for

colour-ringed Whooper Swans. Success! 🥳 Sightings of 44B and 42J added to database. Amazing to think we last saw these birds in Iceland 🇮🇸 a few months ago!
@KaneBrides
@Stephen8Vickers
An emotional week saying goodbye to my conservation heroes 😢
Proud of what we've achieved in the last 7 years, and that I can call them friends, not just colleagues. Keep being awesome Dave and Martin. See you soon 🦆💙
The Coot with a love of flower arranging is back nest building on the

Rushy, making use of the daffodils. This year they've also managed to find two coconut shie - no idea where from as we don't use them on site!
Walked the long way 'home' taking in some scrubby pathways and accidentally did a proper birding thing, and found a Little Bunting 😇 Showing very well near our accommodation at Rantum, Sylt 🇩🇪
Finishing a great day on the south Solway coast, watching the tide come in at Drumburgh under the pink and orange skies of sunset - 1500+ Golden Plover, 37 Bar-tailed Godwit, 6 Redshank, single Greenshank, several hundred Dunlin, thousands of Lapwing and gulls
#CumbriaBirds
May have seen the White-spotted Bluethroat well this morning, singing away - but for me this was

Latterbarrow. I believe the wasp is Argogorytes mystaceus? 🤔🐝
Lovely surprise to see

At least 146 hirundines sat on the wires this morning in Slimbridge village - 9 Swallow, 51 Sand Martin and 86 House Martin. A treat to see, but a sure sign that winter is coming

Bizarre one this evening. This dog fox tracked a Roe Deer buck the whole length of the

I've been putting off thinking about this, every time it creeps into my mind, but the time has come to say goodbye to my colleague, my hero & above all my best friend as he leaves WWT 😭 Wishing you all the very best
