Introducing Bernie's Freesources, a free guide to free resources for the MCAT: .
The mission of this website is simple: to provide completely free resources to students preparing for the MCAT.
Medical students that publish 50+ (let alone 100+) papers throughout medical school-- how? Most students will not come close to this.
Quality > quantity, but quantity is still important if the research is well done.
Unique tips, advice, dos/donts are all always welcomed.
To my med student friends applying into neurosurgery + other residencies re: the publishing arms race.
Great talk by Dr. Amin-Hanjani at
#CNS2023
. She points out: the mean is higher than the median, driven by the outlier students that publish an incredibly high number of papers.

, I have an MCAT resource that I’d love to share for free. It’s a simple Psych/Soc guide with every term and definition—broken down by subsections—I’ve seen from Khan, Kaplan, reddit, practice exams, etc.
DM if you want this. And also DM with any MCAT questions.
@meganranney
This is an awesome & important read. I strongly recommend.
Great example of clear & concise sci/med communication. Language is to the point & humble. Bereft of the dramatization & overconfidence of modern media that seems to frustrate Americans on both sides of political isle.
Started my first rotation in pediatrics. I've loved working in the hospital. My residents and attendings have been so kind, caring, and yet challenging with their teaching. My patients are precious. I feel like a (student) doctor.
Anyway, here is what I made for dinner tonight!
Why does registering for USMLE STEP 2 cost $670?
Is the profit that the NBME makes from student exam registrations excessive? Can we perhaps get this cost down?
Sincerely,
Medical Student
Just attended perhaps the most captivating lecture I've ever been to by
@gradydoctor
. Was such a gift to hear you share amazing stories and insightful lessons.

hot off the press.
“…50% of all applicants who successfully matched having [less than or equal to] 5 publications and 25% having [less than or equal to] 2 publications”.
The older I get, the more the kitchen has become a sanctuary for me. A place and moment in time to dive into deep focus, creativity, precision.
It’s meditative. And ends (usually) in a good meal.
Our medical school soccer team lost to the business school team 3-2 in intramural soccer tonight and my friend said “sometimes capitalism defeats science”.
2 things I’ve done since last new year that have afforded me some added peace are:
-first 10-15 minutes of day are stretching/yoga without phone
-charging phone over night in living room (not in bed room)
Trying to start and end my days with body and mind. Try it out w/ me 🧘
My sister and I decided we'd sit down with our grandparents and interview them with recorded video.
First half is rapid fire personality/interest questions, i.e. "what's your favorite book", "who is your biggest influence", or "what's a happy memory from teenage yours".
An unexpected highlight of my medical school experience has been teaching at a local high school through our Young Physicians Initiative. These kids are so curious. It makes me realize how far I’ve come that I can answer (some of) their questions.
Teaching is so much fun.
Woah. Woke up to so much love. It’s amazing how supportive and kind this online community can be. I’m starting school with a really really full heart. Thank you everyone☺️😅❤️.
And if you followed me, I will be following you right back!
A great birthday gift-- I'm officially a published researcher. This work was truly a team effort and I'm grateful to have had such supportive teammates at

My first ever published manuscript in the Journal of Hand Surgery. Check it out!
I’ve mentioned to friends/family I’ve had difficulty feeling proud of myself as a pre-med with such a long-term journey ahead. Apparently, I’m “too hard on myself”.
But, for the first time in a while, I feel proud of the work I’m doing. It feels good.

Anyone else wonder why NBME practice exams have 4 blocks of 50 questions (200 total) when the real exam is in blocks of 40 questions?
Can we make those 200 total questions into 5 blocks of 40 questions?
Add this to the "Things We Do For No Reason" segment in

The year was 2011. 2 eighth-grade point guards went head to head in the Hoop Group Summer Camp All-Star game in a competitive match up.
1 of those point guards went on to become the starting point guard for the New York Knicks.
The other, is

Big shout out to El Azteca (Park Ridge, NJ) for opening a second location in Mahwah, NJ. This is big news.
Best burrito I have ever had by a long shot!!! Amazing food. Amazing service. Grand opening is August 26th.
Second half is open-ended, philosophical questions, i.e. "are people inherently good or evil", "do you believe in god", or "what does it mean to be happy".
Just completed our first interview of our mom's dad, our papa. We laughed and cried. A lot of both. Heart is full.
250 miles ran for the 2022 year. Looking forward to beating that in 2023.
Always love supporting others runs, bikes, hikes, etc. on Strava. Follow me @ Zachary Bernstein ✌️🏃♂️🌎
My take:
-pursue meaningful scientific projects that spark your curiosity
-don’t be intimidated
-prioritize quality > quantity in your research portfolio while also being mindful that there is a non-zero component of quantity
No, I am not eating a salmon filet for breakfast (although I would). This is from dinner the other night.
Butter basted w/ garlic, lemon, and rosemary.
@jenkins_paul
In my short career, I can confidently say you’re one of the smartest and most welcoming scientists and mentors out there. Too good to quit, Paul!

Thank you so much for leading such a comprehensive and educational session

My grandpa told me stories of harsh competition and sabotage when he was in med school, but I’ve discovered the opposite so far.
Classmates reminding each other of deadlines, sharing resources, checking in on each other’s wellbeing. It’s really nice.
Rainy, cold day = chicken soup.
Used a ton of bones I’ve been saving in the freezer from whole roasting chicken. Going to let this simmer for the day.
Good UWORLD study break. Have a great day everyone. 🙂
My first garden and really my first time trying to grow any plant. Mint, sage, rosemary, basil, thyme, chives, and lavender. Hoping these little guys provide our kitchen w/ fresh herbs for the next 3 years. 🌿🪴
Case reports are fun. A great chance to dive into a (sometimes very limited) literature and learn about something niche you may not otherwise in medical school.
As is the case with this case! Link below to read.
Thank you to Dr. Adamson for the guidance here.
Took a page from

Chicken thighs w/ garlic, cumin, coriander, lemon, s/p, yogurt marinade
Long grain brown rice w/ lemon, cinnamon, butter, and diced kalmata olives
My first pickeling.
And I learned that garlic… turns… blue!?!? A quoogle (quick google) told me that it turns blue in acidic solutions. Anyone know if this is true?

Medicine is not the only discipline with financial barriers to higher education.
After I shared Bernie's Freesources with the world, I had a good friend from college (currently in law school) reach out to me. It turns out--not to my surprise--that there exists a lack of free or
When--and only when--I am scrubbed in do I then realize I have a really intense itch on my ear or lip or cheek or head or eyebrow. Every time. 😇
Is this just me or do others also experience this?
First day back living in NYC after a few weeks staying in NJ.
I wake up excited and ready to have a productive day in the lab. Go to the bathroom to take a quick shower.
Aaaaand the water is brown.
Taking my grandparents to get vaccinated!!! They’ve been so cautious throughout everything. They’ve been looking forward to this day and I’m very grateful it’s finally here.
