What stops people being
#vegan
❓
I think a great deal of individuals hold vegan values (at bottom). But these are suppressed by tradition, culture, false beliefs & closed hearts.
I think that most non-vegans agree that unnecessarily harming animals is morally wrong.
The problem is that they (mistakenly) think that killing animals for food is necessary.
Just because I’m vegan doesn’t mean I promote eating unhealthily. If you want to eat it, go for it. But don’t fool yourself or anyone else thinking it’s “healthy”. Because it’s not.

Reminder: "THEY" TOLD US TO:
⚫ Reduce salt
⚫ Limit saturated fat
⚫ Eat less sugar
⚫ Stop eating so much junk
⚫ Eat less red meat
⚫ Limit alcohol
⚫ Use sunscreen
⚫ Eat +++fruit & veg
⚫ Exercise
... 📢 & they were RIGHT!
You know what,
#veganism
might just win one day.
Why do I believe this❓ The depth of our sadness, moral anger, frustration, commitment: it is fathomless.
💬 As our numbers rise, we will overwhelm the average Joe that eats meat because "mmmm bacon".
AS A DOCTOR IT’S MY DUTY TO TELL YOU that dietary changes can improve your metabolic health and thereby reduce your risk of suffering from severe illness from covid-19.
If
#animalfree
diets were intrinsically unhealthy, I would still eat this way for ethical reasons.
Fortunately, this is not the case.
While there are potential disadvantages to
#vegan
diets (as there are for all diets), with a little planning these can be overcome.
I'm eating like a "junk food
#vegan
" for 28 days, then I'll measure lipids & glucose.
Are you interested to see the results❔ Or do you think it's a pointless exercise❓
Being
#vegan
is not about "being nice" to animals.
Being vegan = living in a way that is consistent with extending basic rights to non-human animals.
💬 This is a *duty* that we owe these sentient creatures.
They told us to reduce salt 🧂
They told us to limit saturated fat 🥓
They told us to eat less sugar 🍭
They told us to stop eating so much junk 🍔🍟
They told us to eat whole grains 🍞
They told us to eat less red meat 🥩
And they were RIGHT ✅
Did I miss anything❓
Many people complain that
#tofu
is bland, tasteless & unappetising 🤮
Few people complain that flour is bland, tasteless & unappetising 😋
💬 Both are insipid on their own. Both can be used *as an ingredient* to make a variety of phenomenal dishes 👌
If you think organic, grass-fed, regenerative beef 🐄 is the way forward...
... you should face the fact that this is utterly impractical unless combined with a large reduction in the amount of beef eaten 🌎.
Question: When you see footage of animals being harmed/mutilated/sexually abused/slaughtered in order to "harvest" their "products" for profit, what do your moral intuitions say to you❓
To my surprise, since adopting a
#lowcarb
diet I've received no unpleasant/aggressive tweets from the lowcarb community (despite the fact I'm eating a 100%
#plantbased
/ plant-only diet).
But I've received many enquiries and supportive comments from lowcarbers! 👍

(1/n) CONFESSION TIME 😢 (this isn’t an easy thing for me to reveal).
A year ago, I did a self-experiment whereby I added
#eggs
to my otherwise
#vegan
diet. As expected, my "bad cholesterol" went up. 💬
But what I didn’t say is that I felt SO MUCH better for those 🥚🥚.
Regarding the "plant milk is not milk" comment: see Stephen Fry's analysis below.
Regarding the claim that they're junk: why then, does soy milk outperform dairy milk in clinical trials❓
Those that are
#vegan
today... are part of a revolution that has not even begun.
Of course, in the end humanity will see that needlessly sexually assaulting, torturing, enslaving & killing animals is wrong.
It's a matter of time.
When I learnt about the way the
#dairy
industry treats cattle, I went dairy-free on the spot.
Within a week, I adjusted to soy milk & I've never looked back 🌱🥛
Luckily, soy milk is not just more ethical, it's also healthier ⬇️
📢 There's no need to fear
#soy
milk.
✨ Soy 🥛exerts beneficial effects on health markers (compared to dairy milk):

💬 I'd worry if I had high LDL-C & I'd worry more with each day that goes by.
The endothelium is subjected to mechanical & oxidative stress day in, day out. With age our ability to combat this inevitably declines.
So keep LDL-C low for me. Thanks guys 💫

I refuse to use terms like "meat" or "milk" to describe animal products.
This upsets some people (especially those that consume animal flesh & bovine mammary secretions).
I'll do you a deal: I'll use the terms I want to use & you use the terms you want to use. Fair❓
Red meat 🥓🥩🍖 (especially fatty red meat) most likely increases one's risk of death & disease versus most other sources of protein.
Kick, scream, stamp your feet, call me names, it won't change the situation.
Each daily serving of red meat in the form of mixed meals (eg. lasagna, burger) was associated with a 27% increase in risk of mortality while red meat as the main dish (eg. steak) was associated with a 29% increase in risk

Should this happen, we would collectively strive to resolve any problems in this regard as compassionately as possible.
💬Such a world would be infinitely kinder to non-human animals.
💬Contrary to popular opinion, it's relatively easy to get lots of protein on an
#animalfree
/
#vegan
diet.
I currently eat about 1100kcal & 100g of protein per day (2g/kg/d).
If carbs make us fat, why are vegans the slimmest of all dietary groups & yet base their meals on.... CARBS❓[tee hee]
High-fatters answering this question:
Vegan diets require more planning because of cultural norms & the way society is structured.
As animal-free diets become increasingly normalised, it should get easier.
It's day 1 (of 28) of eating nothing but ultra-processed
#vegan
/
#animalfree
foods:
➊ I'm v hungry.
➋ If my blood lipids come back normal, I will give up on nutrition science 😜
It's no surprise to me that RFJ Jr opposes both seed oils & "ultra-processing".
Anti-seed oil & anti-UPF rhetoric – like anti-vax rhetoric – is underpinned by scientific illiteracy, conspiracy theories & logical fallacies.
I saved a mouse from being tortured by 2 domestic cats. It was stunned & injured.
I don't know why I called her Geraldine.
After a night's rest at my house (+food & water) I was able to release her back to the wild. I wish her well 🥲.
Cats should be kept indoors imo.
💡Instead of *pretending* that plants have feelings & animal-based diets harm fewer sentient beings and so on...
... why not just admit that you don't care about the animals that you eat❓
It's important that
#vegans
embrace the incontrovertible fact that humans are omnivores & as such it's imperative to take B12 supplements &/or eat B12-fortified food frequently & regularly.
Evidence-based
#vegans
acknowledge some animal products are decent choices *from a nutritional POV*.
But we also hold:
1⃣ Animal products are not required for human health, functioning, performance & vitality.
2⃣ It's morally wrong to needlessly harm/kill sentient beings.

Question: if they were commercially available, would you purchase some❓
Even if companies are legally prevented from labelling 'plant drinks' [sic] as

....
... this won't stop consumers from doing so. Plant milks are here to stay .
💬 Moan, cry; be triggered: it won't change this FACT 🍼👶
I'm a 5 foot 2 petite biological female.
Is it bigoted or unreasonable to not want to share a women-only space (e.g. prison) with a fully functioning biological male that identifies as a woman❔
The answer, I think, is a resounding "NO!".
I eat an
#animalfree
diet for ethical reasons, not bc I think some version of a
#vegan
diet is best for health.
My goal here on twitter & on is to better understand how to plan animal-free diets for good health outcomes.

Some individuals criticise me for hedging my tweets with "I think", "seems" & "imo" etc.
They do not *seem* to understand that science is about probability, NOT absolute certainty.
I will leave "certainty" to cult leaders (including diet gurus 😎) & their acolytes.
I get a lot of attention from anti-vegans & carnivore dieters.
I usually ignore them tbh (bc imo the quality of their arguments is usually rather poor).
But in this post I invite them (& anyone else) to give me their *best* argument for why animal-free diets are unhealthy 👇
💬 The idea that emulating the lives of our ancient ancestors is in general a good strategy for improving human health is an illusion created by confirmation bias.
Am I wrong❔
People in the main don't stick to diets long-term (this includes plant-based diets).
But in my estimation, very few ethical
#vegans
quit veganism (that is, turn their backs on the plight of non-human animals).
FACT: There's a global consensus (among experts) about what makes up a healthy diet.
💬 The idea that there isn't, is an illusion sustained by online grifters, numerous fad diets, diet zealots, tabloid journalism, popular nutrition books & what not.
This is a vacuous take.
If you *choose* to eat animals & their products, please don't cling to the fantasy/cope that this is necessary for health/survival.
Number 5⃣ (
#tofu
steak) for me please.
Superior PUFA/SFA ratio ✅
More protein per calorie ✅
Environmentally friendlier ✅
