Just to clarify, cuz it's confusing: Simon & Schuster did not sign a book deal with that cop. They distribute books for a publisher who signed the book deal.
They should 100% cancel the distribution deal but cannot cancel the book deal; know what to ask for when you contact them

my replies are full of suggestions of dozens of things to buy. Please remember: a lot of people (esp people who are most profoundly impacted) don't have the money to go out and buy all this stuff. Why buy bottled water and ice when you can prepare a day ahead instead?

I heard one of the huge male thriller authors say that his publisher guessed it would take 7 books to make him a big name so they committed to 7 books FROM THE START. publishers aren't committing to authors careers like that anymore, so everyone has to keep their day job
what are peoples thoughts on why fiction writers are producing so much less work than in the past, say up into the 80s but moreso w/r/t the writers of the early part of the 20th c. for the most part we dont have major writers who publish 10, 15, 20+ books anymore.

I've been pushing back lately when people say "it's not well written but I can't put it down" because why don't we consider that unputdownable quality an aspect of "good writing"? That is a skill that trad pub seems to undervalue IMO

Unsolicited published advice for those at all levels: Get yourself some trusted writing friends and get a private chat.
When you're upset or have a sensitive question, go to the chat rather than your public/semi-public social media account or Facebook group with 1.7k members.

Publishers need to stop playing around with this. There's almost nothing stopping your tentpole authors from self publishing at this point if you treat them with this much disrespect.
Authors: we need to stand up with the actors. AI is ALREADY HERE in our work. I just spoke to a Very Famous Author who has to remain nameless for legal reasons. They are held up in a contract negotiation because a Major Publisher wants to train AI on their work.

The first book I ever sold, the author created social media accounts to announce the deal. It hit NYT. She still has a small following. The book is still selling.

This is why I have rolled my eyes at some of the "authors, talk to your agents about ai in your contracts" tweets. Agents are fighting for clauses, and some publishers are simply refusing. Even a Very Famous Author can't get them to budge.
