When I see actors on the tube pawing over some audition sides my stomach lurches. You’re all so brave doing that day in day out. Good luck to all you actors who’ve got auditions today. I see you 💛
I am now a London home owner! 🎉 This has taken years. To some this may not sound like a big deal to others - unattainable. I am aware of the immense privilege -incredibly grateful & proud. When you come from the north & from no money these things feels like someone else’s life.
Honestly being freelance and trying to work around two kids childcare & make enough money to survive, let alone thrive in this industry & city is a real challenge.
I know I’m banging this drum constantly & may be annoying, but I think it’s a really broken system.
Lost another big project that was due at the end of the year yesterday. This is happening to all of us and I wanted to send my support to all those feeling it right now. Let’s keep talking and finding a way through together
Most of theatre (dominated by the middle/upper classes) find working class communication styles too challenging. So many stories of friends/family leaving jobs/having hard experiences due to being found as “too direct” etc. Tiring.
A reminder that our industry is inherently classist and we have a responsibility to consider the barriers we can remove in every decision of power we make - and we don’t have to be polite about it
Who are the most exiting actors around at the moment? All ages, known & not so well known. I’m making a list & would love to hear your thoughts. If I can see them in anything all the better!
I love NHS staff because they treated my mums cancer and she’s been clear ever since. I love NHS staff because they cared for me, brought my daughter into the world safely and saved my life last year when I caught sepsis in child birth 💙

Recommendations of very experienced and highly skilled multi-role actors - those who can really shape shift and work across a number of characters in an ensemble. Thankyou!
For all the creative freelance parents/carers. I’m on my way to rehearsals after 24 hours of a sick bug caught from my daughter. My son shat on my leg as I was leaving. We have ITV in filming today. I see you 🙃
Love to all my fellow adoptees. It’s rough out there at the moment. I shared my thoughts on it all with
@washingtonpost
and I’m ready for the trolls when it gets published ❤️💪

I get to make 6 radio plays with 6 different writers developing them all from scratch. We will be telling stories of people who have/who do care for someone and have interviewed dozens of amazing people to create a public archive. What a wonderful thing.
Introducing our Director
@SarahMeadows1
. Sarah is a multi award-winner and was a director with the prestigious Old Vic 12 programme. Before lockdown Sarah had 2 shows in the West End. Currently she directs at Drama Schools & is developing projects for when theatres re-open.
Shout out to all the working freelance mums in this industry. So many I know are fighting private battles and still showing up with humour, grace & honesty. The challenges of survival are very real rn but they’re managing to make incredible art against the odds. Solidarity ♥️
If anyone needs a chat or guidance or support my DM’s are open. You may want to chat about your work or anything really. I’m so aware that we all need something solid to hold on to, so I can be that for you if you need 💪
Respect to all the director & artists who are parents or carers. Even getting to work is a win when you have huge sleep deprivation, guilt & no time to think. How can we do better for those looking after people & raising the next generation?
Actively employ womxn. Actively employ womxn with caring responsibilities and with flexibility so they can. We need to make sure we don’t lose them from our industry at this crucial time.
1/2 Retweet- Calling playwrights! I would love you to send me your plays - the ones that need to be told soon. I am looking ahead over the next couple of years and am keen to read plays particularly by or about underrepresented groups & stories that tackle challenging ideas
Female directors...question - how do you handle misogyny in the rehearsal room from actors & prod? I’ve had a fair few situations & am reflecting on how we handle these moments. If you have any examples & how you dealt (or didn’t) I’d be very keen to hear. DM if want private
Genuinely fuck you to all the people who have a big or small or tiny problem with the
@sainsburys
advert. You have no idea the constant pain you are causing to so many people (and I can’t understand either but we must sit in it) Fuck you.
Been wondering what theatre can do “when it’s back” to support bringing womxn back into the industry with confidence. Many parents have had months of childcare & no focus on self, career, skills building. They’ve lost jobs or had to leave work. It needs a conscious approach.
CASTING: Black Female comedy actress aged 33 - 35 to play lead in TV Comedy Pilot. Olivia - black executive at an all-white Media Company and has been a lover of sex since she lost her virginity. Intelligent, confident and driven. CV/showreels to msmonoproductions

Trying to write an Arts Council bid whilst looking after a two month old baby is hilariously difficult. I think they should just give me the money for pure audacity
I think I love being a director because I love learning & I love to study my experience of living. Makes life more vivid & alive when you can see it’s mechanisms - if a bit noisy. Why do you do what you do theatre twitter?
My Nanna is celebrating her 99th birthday today 🥳 she didn’t marry or have kids until she was 30 (because “I was having too much fun” & was a nurse in the war. She’s hilarious & I’m hoping she can get to hug my daughter for the first time soon 🙏
First full week working
@oldvictheatre
- away from 4 month old baby Nancy - since she was born. End of an era and start of a new one. Just left her crying out her first nap. Motherhood is a constant lesson in love (and tiredness)

SHAME ON YOU
@BBCWorld
Disgraceful. Damaging. Reductive. Provocative. Childish. An untrue & sexist reading - just dumb af - YOU are a big part of the problem. Be accountable.
I remember having a meeting with him which was bizarre & unnerving & a male member of staff saying “you’re lucky it wasn’t a few years ago he would have had you on the desk”. Stop enabling men like this.
Max Stafford-Clark has spoken out for the first time about the sexual harassment allegations that led to his exit from Out of Joint and to "the collapse of my world”, in a new book in which he also discusses his plans for a new theatre company
An actor just surprised me with these. Unashamedly sharing. Us directors work hard to make actors and writers work be the best it can and that’s what drives us, but when it’s acknowledged for no particular reason is means such a lot ❤️
My greatest parenting win so far is teaching my 2 year old to keep trying.
Watching her quietly trying to build something, it falls down - she say “Oh dear. Ok. Try again.” Builds a stronger and higher tower but it falls down. Tries again. ❤️
Put your hand up if you’re not at

this year 🖐 Nancy and I wish everyone taking a show up success (whatever that looks like for you) and a healthy festival. Any recommendations let me know so I can pass on to people who ask 👍
Today was my last day working in theatre land before I have my baby. Strange feeling to pause a part of yourself & move into the unknown of motherhood. Had the pleasure of working with super brain
@SophiaLeuner
on her fab script
@ParkTheatre
tho. A good way to bow out. 👋 for now
Late to
#OVConnect
but I’m a director emerging from maternity leave & me and my new perspective are on the look out for projects for later in 2020. Looking to connect with new producers, prod companies & creatives who may have some projects looking for a life :)
A few years ago I had to walk out of a job as a stand to push a building in our industry to sack a male predator. After lots of complaints and traumatised women had already spoken out. Why does it have to take so much & even then it’s often acted on begrudgingly...
Getting on the train on my way to start making a show. The baby I am growing’s first rehearsals. Happy

Thankyou to the kindest man who walked the length of the tube carriage to give me his seat just now. I forgot my baby on board badge today and he saw me struggling about in the crowds with my bump. My hero.
Thrilled to be co-directing this with

I often feel like I deserve an award for doing solo bedtime with two kids under three most nights. It’s a drama of many exciting acts & surprises with some cracking performances
So proud of the
