Transgender Anglican priest, public speaker and singer-songwriter. Priest in Charge of St John's in city centre Cardiff. Real life is stranger than fiction.
👋On this Trans Day of Visability, here I am. If you are or maybe trans, or if someone in your family or friendship network is, all good wishes your day. If you are trans or feel you might be, please know there is no need to 'come out' and be visible unless you want to 🙏
Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. A day of mixed emotions as there is so much anti trans aggression at the moment. Hello to everyone, whatever your gender. Know that you are precious and valuable and that you matter. Go gently folks and be kind.
20 years ago I was ordained Deacon in Hereford Cathedral. We made a little bit of history that day as I was the first person to be ordained by the C of E having previously made a gender change. A thread 🧵 1/6 (probably)
Now that Easter is celebrated with our 3 services I can now post that it is Transgender Day of Visability and so if anyone needs to see it. . . here I am just ahead of Evensong tonight in
@stjohnscardiff
where I am the vicar.
#TDOV2024
I've written a prayer which may be helpful for anyone wishing to pray for Brianna Ghey. Please feel free to use it if you like it and to share it with others if you wish 🙏

Hey BBC,
@BBCRadio3
please can you stop referring to 'the tax burden' in your news reports. Tax is a method whereby we collectively pay for the things necessary for our society. It helps us to care for those who need it. The Common Good is important.
Hi
@BBCNews
please stop referring to taxation as the ‘tax burden’. The only burden is people taking more than their fair share. Taxation helps us pay for what we value. Schools, a Health Service an infrastructure and it helps us to help those in need 💪
When you go to buy a tea for someone on the street and someone sees that you are the vicar and pays for the tea for you ‘so you can help someone’. Welcome humanity 🙏
I can't describe how lovely this is. . . I'm delighted to have trained at Westcott. The day I left I wrote on the whiteboard in the lodge 'Thank you Westcott, my heart sang whilst I was with you'. 🙏💚
Today we give thanks for Revd Canon Sarah Jones. Sarah is the first person to have been ordained in the Church of England after having made a gender transition. She is an advocate for social justice and inclusivity in the Church.
Thank you Attitude Magazine for giving me a 2021 Pride Award. I'm honoured to be in such company. The LGBTQIA+ community are wonderful and glorious. You add immeasurably to the beauty of this world.

Thanks Aga for make up!
I’ve just been to Burger King for the first time. Seriously! I took a photo for proof. And now to the Newport Pride Vigil for Brianna Ghey

Richard is the third rough sleeper to die on the streets of Cardiff this year. Every time we met he'd shout, 'Viicaar' I'd reply with 'Ricccchard' and we'd bump fists. May you dwell in God's heavenly city and your portion this day be in peace.
Dear all companies that I call, please stop saying that you are 'unusually busy' and cannot take my call just now. If you are always 'unusually busy' then you are usually busy. Please get more staff, improve your customer service and reduce the pressure on your current employees.
Catch me on ITV Wales News at 6pm this evening, talking about making a gender change in the 1990s and the differences between transitioning then and doing it now.

I was honoured to be invited to speak at the peaceful protest in Cardiff this afternoon. It was good natured and there was no violence. We encountered each other. There were people of different views in Cardiff today. . . but Cardiff you showed how beautiful you are 💚🏴🙏🌈
There were rumours of an anti-immigrant protest in Cardiff today. Again there was simply a peaceful rally celebrating inclusivity and rejecting racism. Well done Cardiff 👏👏👏
#Cardiff
I am tired. It was a bit of an effort to come into the parish today. I met 3 of our vulnerably housed people on the way in. I had one fist bump, one salute and one ‘Love you babe. Have a good day’. In ministry we often receive as well as give 🙏
Delighted to post that on Sunday I was made a member of the Greater Chapter and a Canon of Llandaff Cathedral. I'd like to thank +June and Dean Gerwyn for allowing me this opportunity to contribute to the Cathedral and Diocese.
Most men in the UK only got the right to vote in 1918 with the Representation of the People Act. Women over 21 only got the right to vote in 1928. Your vote is precious and has been hard-won. Your vote matters.
Do vote!

@NatashaMDay
Horrible for you. I'd defo report to the Police. Is there any cctv in the street? Try to write down what he was wearing and it's ok to say I can't remember. You'll almost certainly be ok but a dreadful experience for sure x
Today I am giving thanks for my ordination and to the C of E and the Diocese of Hereford for having the courage to do it. I am giving thanks for all clergy and particularly for those trans, non-binary, gender queer, gay, lesbian and bi-sexual clergy who faithfully serve God 2/6
I'd like to start this week by saying Thank You to whoever nominated me for the Pinc List. I am delighted to be named in it. Thank you to
@WalesOnline
and to
@JoeAli_
for coordinating this. Diolch!
Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance where we can remember those whose lives have been cut short simply because they are trans. Here's my Thought For The Week as broadcast on BBC H&W this morning.

It has been an overly heavy day. I’ll spare you the details as they would come with trigger warnings. However I can say that I am glad to cast myself into God’s presence as I rest tonight and I shall hope to rise with love in my heart tomorrow 🙏
I am thankful to Westcott House and for the beautiful people whom I have sought to serve. I am thankful for my family who have helped to make this possible and who have loved me despite the calls on my heart and on my time. I am grateful to God for this calling. 6/6
Addressing the Rally in Cardiff. Making the point that Brexit will affect the most vulnerable people in society but that the rally is about the damage that suspension could do to our democracy.
Taking pupils seriously is NOT pandering. Usually a child will have agonised for years before talking with others. Incredible courage is needed to talk to the school and many deep discussions will have taken place. This attitude and headline are ignorant and incredibly harmful.
18 months ago I half-jogged half-walked a 4 mile route in the park 3 times a week. It wasn't elegant but I was fit. Then I caught covid. I haven't been able to jog since. Today I got out early and jogged up and down my drive. The blue sky and the cool air on my skin was great🏃♀️
18 years ago today I visited
@Westcott_House
. They chose me and I chose them (and of course John 15.16 applies). Thank you Westcott, ordinands, students and staff for the gifts you gave me in formation. I value them everyday.
Good morning people! I rock up at a local supermarket wearing my

hoodie. The lady in front of me is wearing her Terry Pratchett inspired University Hoodie. What are the chances! Helen and I had to have a photo.
At Stonewall Cymru Conference in the heart of my parish in Cardiff. Delighted to be here as the vicar and a member of the LGBTQ+ community and part of a panel later
#wherelovematters
Delighted with my
@RainbowToffees
EFC badge. Sharing to show my support and also because there was apparently some homophobic chanting at yesterday's game with Chelsea.
Thank you to
@nationaltrust
for asking me to explore gender, trans issues, diversity and inclusion with you today. I was delighted to meet you all and you were fabulous!
I am giving thanks for the Diocese of Hereford and for Llandaff Diocese and for the parishes of Ross, Walford, Brampton Abbotts and St John’s Cardiff. I am thankful for all who have inspired, encouraged and supported me. 5/6
I am giving thanks for all of the clergy and lay ministers who I have served alongside in ministry. I am giving thanks for the Church of England (who loved me a little less than I loved it) and for the wonderful Church in Wales. 4/6
With the news that 2 teenagers have been convicted of the murder of Brianna, I'm sharing again the prayer I wrote for her when she died. Love is the key to a better world and so I shall also be praying for the 2 teenagers convicted and their families and friends

There was a small anti trans rally in Cardiff yesterday. I went along as to speak with people and to stand in solidarity with the Trans and LGBTQ community of Cardiff.

I am giving thanks for my Training Incumbent The Rev’d John Hunnisett a caring and dedicated priest who taught me so much. 3/6
We announced this morning that I have been appointed as Priest-in-Charge of The City Parish of St John The Baptist, Cardiff. I shall leave my current post at Michaelmas (Sunday 30th September) and be licensed in Cardiff on Thursday 18th October.
Along with being significant for more than one religious community, today is also Transgender Day of Visibility. Visibility is important as it gives hope to people. I am a C of E vicar. I care for people. I am trans. I'm cheering for all trans people today

#TDOV2018
I have been rather over-committed for far too long. I've been able to let go of some tasks this past week. This morning I have exercised and bought some nice bread. Cardiff looks beautiful as it always does and the sky is blue.

We sent a letter to the Prime Minister to demand that the ban on Conversion Therapy would also protect trans people. This is your opportunity to add your voice and signature to the petition.
Please sign and re-tweet. Thank you!

Da iawn to the organisers of the vigil for Dr Gary Jenkins and to everyone who gathered in Cardiff tonight. It was a moving event after an horrific attack. Let us build communities of peace and love 🌈🙏
Last night I went to see Aida at St David's Hall. It was performed by a Ukrainian Company. It was super. At the end the band played the Ukrainian National Anthem. We all stood and cheered. This was quite a moment!

This feels so wrong. Inside I'm yelling 'get your hands off her'. All sorts of alarm bells ringing in my head here. I appreciate that I don't know either of you and the context of the video but. . .
I'm looking forward to presenting my session 'Trans Issues: The Realities, The Questions and some of the Answers' for Kent Fire and Rescue Services today.
Delighted to be at Glamorgan County Cricket Club to help to progress Inclusion and Diversity.
@GlamCricket
is already a leader in EDI within cricket and they are keen to do more. Good things are coming 🏏
The Bishop of Worcester and The Bishop of Dudley have stated that they are in favour of same sex couples being able to be married in Church. This is an important letter. There is a long way to go but this is a good step in the right direction.
#faithfullylgbt
The Bishop of Dudley and I have written to all licensed clergy in the Diocese of Worcester as the ‘Living in Love and Faith’ process draws towards its conclusion.
Excl: Some of the UK’s most senior religious leaders - including former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams - have written to the PM urging him to ban trans as well as gay conversion therapy.
“To be trans is to enter a sacred journey of becoming whole”.
Very sad and shocked to learn of the death of Bishop Alan Wilson. He was a bright light in grey skies and a strong advocate for inclusion of LGBTQ people in the Church of England. May he rest in peace.
What an appalling thing to do. Despite its faults, the BBC is very important. It is a gift to us and very good value. I am sick of HM Govt underfunding national infrastructure, reducing performance and selling off what they can.
I met many special people at Westcott House. Anna was a beautiful person and it was a very happy thought that she was vicar of St Bene't's. We have lost a beautiful soul 🙏
Democracy is fragile. You cannot take it for granted. We are seeing the result of allowing leaders to promote anger and division. Prayers for the USA and also a warning to us all - we must not support leaders who seek to divide and marginalise.
Delighted to have been interviewed for the BBC World Service on the subject of my ordinations in 2004 and 2005. The interview will be broadcast tomorrow morning.
@JustinWelby
Dear Archbishop

I find it very sad that only heterosexual bishops were invited to bring their spouses. I think your tweet should say 'Bishops and spouses of heterosexual Bishops have arrived from around the world for the

I just passed a chap I'd met at Pride Cymru 2018. I said that I was glad we'd recognised each other after such a fleeting meet. He said 'We danced at Pride'. As we parted he said 'May we dance again soon'. I think this would be a good way to finish many conversations.

Sorry and sad to see that abuse. If it helps, here’s a photo of my just now en-route to a Theological College proudly wearing my Rainbow Toffees pin badge. Love to you all NSNO 🙏
Today I'm delighted to be taking part in the Diversity and Inclusion Week organised by the Intellectual Property Office. I'll be speaking about Sex and Gender, trans issues and their intersection with Christian and Feminist perspectives.
It was good to meet Katie and Trev from ITV News yesterday and to film a piece about the importance of HIV Testing, It takes seconds to order a free, confidential postal test via this link: and get results in a few days.

@jessphillips
Thank you for posting this. It is a dreadful but much needed post and a much needed reality check on the violence suffered by women and girls. Thank you for having the courage to include Brianna Ghey even though you knew the nasty comments you would get 🙏
The data on trans performance in sport is nuanced and complex. Blanket bans or blanket inclusion are not best practice. Demonising trans people is just prejudice. We need to do the work to get this right. Thx
