(2/4)Little Mac has lowered activity levels, a loss of appetite, & gastrointestinal issues, on top of her ongoing age-related issues. After exhausting all treatment options, our team is now focusing on keeping her comfortable for as long as possible.

Happy 3 months to this little cutie! Marta now weighs about 12 pounds and according to amazing Vet Tech Cressa she is strong and healthy and loves playing with her mom Ajax! Keeper Karen shares that the two enjoy taking turns playfully stalking and pouncing on one another.

The Santa Barbara Zoo has an exciting announcement! At 4:05 AM on August 6th, Ajax the Amur leopard gave birth to a 1.1 pound baby girl. Given the name Marta by her Premier Foster Feeder sponsors, she is the first Amur leopard cub born at the Zoo in 20 years.

The Southern three-banded armadillo is the only species of armadillo that can completely curl up into a ball.

The island fox has an incredible sense of smell, which is related to the amount of surface area in their nose that is covered with olfactory sensing cells. Inside this nose is approximately 50 square inches of these cells, which means there are around 200 million!

As the temperature begins to fall during the winter months, Xiao the Chinese alligator and several other herptiles around the Zoo will begin to brumate.
“Brumation” is a state of prolonged lethargy similar to hibernation.

IT'S A BOY! The Zoo's happy to report that our new giraffe calf born yesterday is male. Twiga received his first exam earlier today, where he measured in at six feet tall and 125.5 pounds! Both baby and mom, Adia, are doing well and bonding behind the scenes.

(3/4)A behavioral study was conducted to observe Mac's behavior after the passing of her companion, Sujatha. This study provided data that Mac was thriving in her environment, even on her own. Our experts believe her declining health to be directly associated with her old age.

PUPDATE: The most recent baby otter exam showed that these cuties are growing well! At approximately 200 grams, or about .5 pounds, they have nearly doubled in size. Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest species of otter as the majority of adults weigh less than ten pounds!

She's small but mighty! Since her oral melanoma diagnosis last April, Jasmin the fennec fox is still showing no signs of new mass growth of metastasis due to her Melanoma vaccine treatment. Usually for dogs, this treatment hasn't been done with any other fennec foxes we know of!
