I flew over the Grand Canyon and the Blue Ridge Mountains in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and it's really impressive.
Also chatted with members of the team about how it's all coming together.
"I think you have to be honest and trusting. You need to not treat them as business entities, but as partners."
We played Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and talked to the global team that's making it.

PlayStation appears to be losing Themes with PS5, but gaining picture-in-picture viewing features...which Xbox lost a while ago, but has now gained Themes.
This is way funnier to me than it should be.
Finished Pentiment. Phenomenal narrative adventure that handles the consequence of ambiguity in crime better than anything else I've seen/played this year. Great mystery, characters, and a love letter to 16th century Germany. Thanks,
@Obsidian

With Baldur's Gate 3 getting so much (rightfully deserved) attention, I hope more people check out Dungeons and Dragons: Honor among Thieves. It's still one of my favorite films of the year and I genuinely believe in a few years it'll be looked back on as a modern classic.
Halo Infinite sandbox update. Pretty aesthetic and design focused, it's worth a read.
Highlights:
-Hunters will be more faster and more dangerous
-Some equipment is physics-based, with wild results
Also more gun renders, which look *fantastic*.
First time every trying out the

Design Lab, I wanted my first picks to be special, so I decided to make two controllers themed after characters from
@ArkaneStudios
games.
Random thoughts I've had re - Xbox Games Showcase:
-This is easily the strongest first-party Xbox has ever had
-Obsidian is proving they're a powerhouse with backing
-Fable, Avowed, inXile's next game, (presumably) The Outer Worlds 2; Xbox could be *the* WRPG publisher next-gen
Phil Spencer recently talked a fair bit about Halo Infinite, hinting at it being a platform rather than a standalone game.
This is in line with rumors from WC's sources, including the fact the multiplayer may be entirely free-to-play.
That's Hi-Fi Rush done. What a phenomenal experience. Blown away by the art, music, animations, and characters. Already a secure pick for one of my favorite games of the year. Fantastic work by

I love Starfield. A slow opening aside (it doesn't funnel you the way Skyrim/Fallout 4 do) the payoff is incredible.
This is easily the best mainline BGS story, and some of the faction questlines could've been their own expansions.
#Starfield
I won't be surprised at all if Call of Duty is moved to a biannual model once the deal closes. Let Raven, Toys for Bob, Beenox, etc work on other games, whether it's older stuff or new IP.
@BenjiSales
I'm pleasantly (but mildly) surprised Hades 2 is that high. Seems like awareness of the first game really exploded.
Makes sense given this is Supergiant's first-ever sequel.
Sometimes I just like to sit back and think about Arkane. What a phenomenal output over the past decade. Definitely one of the studios I'm most interested in for the next generation.
Watching the progression of this art as BossLogic draws the new

game reveal has been fascinating. More of these kinds of quirky, artistic reveals please.
I think the next couple of years are going to show people that the Xbox Publishing division got the same massive budget increase as everything else. Exciting times.
Microsoft is reportedly exploring a browser-based solution for bringing Cloud Gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to iOS in 2021. This is the route Amazon Luna takes, so it's not surprising to see Microsoft take this route.

@JezCorden
It's still wild to me that Blizzard's engine improved to the point they can use these detailed character models for cutscenes and regular gameplay.
Some big updates on Sea of Thieves.
-Just crossed 15 million players.
-This is up from 10 million players in January 2020.
-Over a million copies sold on Steam since its June 3 launch.
-June 2020 was its biggest month ever, over 3.3 million players.
Everything else about Redfall looks great so I'm still playing day one, but this is a *weird* choice for a first-person game.
I might be in the vocal minority, but I'd have preferred it the other way around: Performance mode at launch, Quality mode sometime after.
Alright, God of War prediction time. I spent a while re-watching the God of War Ragnarok trailer frame-by-frame and I've got a few theories about what's happening in the story.
#GodofWarRagnarok
(Also an excuse to just gush over that trailer in a thread)
Man.
Between The Callisto Protocol in December, Dead Space remake in January 2023, and Resident Evil 4 remake in March 2023, if everything holds in regards to release dates, we're about to have one of the best stretches of big-budget horror games ever.
A listing for Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course has appeared on Xbox saying it's available now. Possible shadow drop incoming tomorrow?
Thanks to my friend
@BearClawGaming
for spotting this one!
The Dead Space remake is phenomenal.
@MotiveStudio
brought this back the right way, with meaningful changes that leave scares beat-for-beat where needed.
My review:
My latest: I spoke with a member of the ZeniMax QA team about why they are organizing, how the effort is going under Microsoft's neutrality agreement, and what they hope to accomplish in the future.
Playstation VR2:
-Launching Feb. 22, 2023.
-Starting at $550
-Also a $600 bundle that includes Horizon Call of the Mountain.
Launching a headset for more than you're charging for the console in the U.S. is certainly one strategy.
@klobrille
After the reveal of Forza Horizon 5, I found myself thinking "I really feel sorry for Playground Games because one-upping this is going to be incredibly difficult."
Then I remembered I thought the same thing after seeing Forza Horizon 4.
So I've been playing Gears Tactics for the past few days, and it absolutely rules. While the awesome
@JezCorden
is working on Windows Central's review,
@BearClawGaming
and I, both being Gears fans, are planning on getting together to record and talk about it in the weeks to come.
The Callisto Protocol is awesome. Big budget terror that pays heavy homage to Dead Space, but still introduces a couple of news ideas. It's a gruesome adventure that's well worth playing.
#TheCallistoProtocol
My review:
Official deals confirmed with Nintendo *and* Valve/Steam.
Leaves Sony out as the obvious exception that hasn't agreed yet (though we know it's been offered) and definitely helps to add pressure as some regulatory decisions can be expected in the coming weeks.
Microsoft kept its word and has allowed the ZeniMax Media workers to unionize. It's a huge departure for "big tech" and sets massive precedent for the North American gaming industry as 2023 kicks off.
Oh hey, I got to review Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition.
This remaster is an excellent end to the trilogy that fixes major issues I had like the Home City card unlock, with smart changes like vastly better Native American presentation.
I would love if this becomes a yearly tradition. Feels like a fun way to start out the year and I appreciate this format of just letting the people who actually make games discuss projects in-depth.
BREAKING: A new Xbox Developer_Direct arrives on January 18, with a look at Obsidian's Avowed, MachineGames' Indiana Jones project, and more.

Microsoft has renegotiated the music licenses for Alan Wake and the game is back on Steam. It's coming back to the Xbox Store soon. Awesome, thanks MS!
Amusing that Alan Wake would come back on the day that Red Dead Redemption 2 is just hours away.
Confirmed!
Excited to see this, and appreciate Xbox +Bethesda being transparent about a dedicated Starfield show being in the works for later. This is potentially a great new format for the companies to use.
The Initiative has picked up more major talent, bringing on Tom Shepherd, former Technical Director at Rockstar Games. Tom worked on games like Red Dead Redemption.
Slowly but surely they're filling all the key positions and getting the foundation down.
Had to say goodbye to Butterfinger today. Almost 17 years together. I'm not losing a pet, she was a family member. Heck, she was closer than most family I've had.
Laila tov, girl. You can rest now.
Xbox Series X|S are the fastest selling Xbox consoles ever, per Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. PS5 is the fastest-selling PlayStation console ever.
Supply (and microchips as a whole) will continue to be a problem but this could easily be the best generation ever for Sony and MS.
Microsoft is allowing developers to use Project xCloud for accessing Xbox development kits.
This is really cool. Using it to ease the strain of WFH makes perfect sense. Expect to see more of this used for devs and demos/ preview events in the future.
Games have been delayed left and right over the last two years thanks to factors induced by the pandemic. Analysts say that's likely to continue in 2022, but perhaps not for the exact same reasons.
My latest:
Prey is such a magnificent, underrated gem. It was my GOTY 2017, so it really warms my heart to see my friend
@shinobi602
sharing his experiences after recently playing it. Give this a watch folks (and honestly, watch The Joy of Gaming in general).
This is one way to get an otherwise slow day started. First off, I love the approach Xbox is taking. People are starved for next-gen news and this whets that appetite.
Second, full credit to
@JezCorden
for correctly reporting the specs a while ago, even when many doubted him.
I don't think I can overstate how excited for this I am. Age of Mythology (like Age of Empires 2) was a MASSIVE game for me growing up.
Also super cool this is coming to Xbox and PC at the same time.
A family plan has long felt like one of the last pieces of the puzzle for Microsoft's newfound gaming investment over the last few years. Good synergy with the Activision Blizzard acquisition, getting more "casual" content that's easier for families to access for less money.
Some original reporting from me:
Where's the video game industry going, from the lasting effects of the pandemic to the seeming mass consolidation it's undergoing? I inquired of several now-independent AAA veterans to learn the answers.
I'm extremely happy to announce that November 2018 has been the best month in traffic and views for
@TiCGameNetwork
ever. My expectations and hopes have been exceeded. Thank you to everybody who reads and shares what we write. Without your support, this wouldn't be possible :)
A new State of Play for
#TheLastofUsPart2
is coming on May 27 at 4:00 p.m. EST. Around 20 minutes of footage, includes 8 minutes of "never before seen" gameplay.
I hope this follows the blueprint of the Ghost of Tsushima State of Play, which was great.
Looks like Game Pass could soon be combined with Xbox Live Gold at a lower price, called Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
This would be a very smart move, and the fact it's being called "Game Pass" Ultimate is telling. Game Pass is Microsoft's focus.
@shinobi602
I'm going to spend an unholy amount of time just figuring out where to build my base in Starfield, to say nothing of customizing spaceships and exploring, so that feels like the obvious choice.
Our own
@JezCorden
on Windows Central wrote a great review for The Outer Worlds. Describes worldbuilding as "...something that fans of Firefly and Cowboy Bebop will utterly adore."
I was already in but this absolutely seals the deal.
@BenjiSales
This, right here.
I firmly believe this is the most promising Xbox and PlayStation have ever looked. Having it be simultaneous? Buckle up, this is going to be amazing.
Pretty telling that multiple artists and content creators I follow all report issues with their work stolen and sold as NFTs in the same day. Just saying.
Saw Underwater. Great pacing, never felt like any scene was too short or too long. Claustrophobic, good use of fear of the unknown with some decent scares and surprises. Always nice when a horror cast is competent and makes smart choices. Also, Kristen Stewart is fantastic.
At a recent Bleeding Edge preview event, I got the chance to interview creative director Rahni Tucker (
@flabb0
) and senior designer Gerald Poon. We talked about the origins of the game, post-launch support, the acquisition by Xbox and more.
Halo Infinite is most likely going to contain microtransactions, but Chris Lee from 343 Industries has previously stated there will be no real-money lootboxes. With Gears 5 and Sea of Thieves following suit, it appears to be an XGS-wide standard.
Forgot to share this yesterday. Here's my favorite 15 games from the past decade.
Gears 5
RDR2
God of War
Prey
Total War: Warhammer II
Dishonored 2
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Bloodborne
The Last of Us
Dark Souls
Skyrim
Gears of War 3
Dead Space 2
Halo: Reach
Mass Effect 2
So,
#Gears5Hivebusters
is a fantastic addition to the franchise. It takes everything that already worked in Gears 5 (my GOTY 2019) and combines it with some smart improvements, surprisingly quiet character moments and absolutely gorgeous vistas.
Review:
Guerrilla Games has shared more info on Horizon Forbidden West.
-Aiming for 2021 release date.
-"Dozens" of new machines.
-Underwater areas to explore.
-New human tribes, one of which can override machines for use in war.
This sounds incredible.
I hope that moving forward, we can see the Gears franchise alternate between a big mainline title and a Tactics-style game. Gears Tactics was excellent and there's plenty of room for this "spin-off" series to continue. Loved this strategic ride!
@splashdamage
@CoalitionGears
According to Obsidian's CEO Feargus Urquhart, the studio has four teams right now: One on The Outer Worlds (the majority), one wrapping up work on POE2, and "two other teams that are starting things up."
Microsoft's RPG output next-gen could be awesome.
@BlessingJr
With every new track I play, I think "oh man, that was cool, the game is done evolving now" and with every new track I am proven wrong. Immaculate.
