I am over the moon to receive a Project Grant award from Breast Cancer Now.
The project aims to leverage existing community infrastructures - by training service providers to adapt their services - to improve diet and physical activity support in breast cancer care.
I recently delivered a workshop on structuring paragraphs to our
@NCLUni_SportSci
stage 3 students as part of a writing retreat.
It is a simple method but it has helped me countless times to get words on paper. Hopefully it will help their writing too.
Chuffed to have passed my PhD viva today
@UniOfHull
. Thanks to my supervisors and examiners. Particular thanks to
@GregTees
as external examiner - what a great bloke to meet and learn from.
Well, I am very humbled & surprised to receive this open research award. Thanks to all fellow speakers,
@sboneham
& others
@UniofNewcastle
for putting on a great event
I always stay behind after giving a lecture so students can ask 1-on-1 questions.
Today, after giving a lecture to 2nd year students on exercise for people with obesity, the one question I got asked:
"How much can you bench?"
Next week I start at
@StudentsNCL
as a lecturer in
@NCLUni_SportSci
. It will be a strange start but I can't wait to join the team!
Really enjoyed my ~2yrs as a postdoc at
@NUSportEx
, great Department and people.
Started the week with an ECR grant rejected at the 1st stage.
Finished the week with an NIHR BRC grant approved for a real exciting project as co-I, plus a day of listening to oustanding talks by our stage 3 students

Effects of Exercise on Cancer Treatment Efficacy: A Systematic Review of Preclinical and Clinical Studies
Nice review. IMO it highlights how far away we are from knowing anything about exercise & cancer treatment efficacy in humans
I have been using simulations to identify the smallest sample size required to achieve (80%) power in a multilevel model, given assumed population parameters (inspired by
@lakens
' MOOC).
The paper below gives a nice tutorial of how to do this in R
We are looking for a Research Associate to work on an exciting 3-year project in breast cancer
The project aims to improve women's access to diet and physical activity support after breast cancer treatment
I am very happy to chat to anyone interested
A nice email to receive amid how crazy academia is currently feeling. Looking forward to share open access.
The serological responses to acute exercise in humans reduce cancer cell growth in vitro: A systematic review and meta-analysis

@AlastairJordan
Reflecting on the decade..
2010: 17 yr old signing a new deal at Cas Tigers. Doing a BTEC National Diploma in Sport Science alongside full-time training.
2020: 18 months into a postdoc.
Strange and exciting decade for me professionally. Happy new year!

For this months staff feature we'd like to Introduce Dr.
@SamOrange01
, a Lecturer in Clinical Exercise Science
@UniofNewcastle
.
Sam’s research focuses on the role of physical activity in cancer prevention and survivorship, spanning both clinical and mechanistic research fields
Really happy that our home-based resistance training study has been accepted in Translational Sports Medicine.
On a personal note, I spent ~2yrs on this project, met some great people & learnt a lot.
Will post link to paper soon.

Effects of velocity-based training vs. alternative resistance training on changes in strength, power and sprint speed: a systematic review, meta-analysis and quality of evidence appraisal
Really excited for this paper to be accepted in
@JSportsSci
It starts to show the work we are doing (
@HullSportExSci
@HullCoaching
) with adults who are severely obese. Good timing too post-thesis submission!
Full text pre-print:

We show comparable effects of supervised vs. unsupervised resistance exercise on physical function in older adults (caveats apply).
What is the optimal type and dose of physical activity for colorectal cancer prevention?
In this paper, I synthesize the best available evidence to try answer this important question
I continue to be inspired and humbled by all the academics who carry out and communicate their research in a non-native language. It is hard enough to do in your first language
Neat infographic of our recent paper in

My experience is that when UG students write their dissertations, they almost always try to spin a non-significant finding into a 'positive' result. Why do they do this? Is it because most papers they read report positive findings?
More filming for the upcoming semester - this is the sit-to-stand velocity/power test using the
@GymAware
PowerTool. Previously validated against 3D motion capture in older adults
On my way to
#AICR2022
from the UK
Looking forward to meet everyone there & give some thoughts on our recently-completed feasibility study of remotely-supervised exercise for patients with primary liver cancer
The AICR 2022 Research Conference on Diet, Obesity, Physical Activity, and Cancer has been approved as a Continuing Professional Education Accredited Provider by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. RDs can receive up to 17.5 CPEU hours. Register now:
Thoroughly enjoyed the AICR 2022 Research Conference. It was great to represent my colleagues and share our ongoing work in liver cancer.
The best part was meeting great people and learning from what they're doing. Until next time..

When my 300m rowing times are 0.5-1.5s slower than usual I tell myself it's measurement error. When they are 0.5-1.5s faster than usual my training has clearly paid off and I am in peak physical condition.

Looking forward to start this important project soon with Prof Helen Reeves and

!
After collecting data on most days of the week for 18 months, the final post-test of my main PhD project has been completed. Extremely humbling experience, enjoyed (almost) every minute of it!
-Runs training study with "aging adults" (aged > 50 y)
-Mum meets inc criteria so volunteers to participate
-Mum completes training intervention
-Paper gets published
-Shows Mum published paper
-Mum curses you for classing her as an "aging adult"
Systematic review and meta-analysis of velocity-based training vs. other resistance training methods.
Enjoyed working on this with a strong team. Hopefully it will have a worthwhile contribution to the field.

I really enjoyed meeting the lovely women at the

Bored of reading papers titled "The validity of a novel [insert technique] to measure [insert dependent variable]"
You know before reading it that the paper will conclude the novel technique is an 'effective alternative to the gold standard'

For those of us who are likely to be paid in full during the
#coronavirus
outbreak (although never say never), please consider maintaining your usual payments to local businesses - the dog walker, baby sitter, local gym etc.
Great afternoon at the parliamently session Levelling Up Obesity Care. Lots of interesting discussions about next steps for obesity management in England.
Turns out they do let riff-raff into the House of Commons.
@novonordisk
Pleased to see our protocol paper online, describing the protocol for a virtually-supervised group exercise intervention in older patients with liver cancer.
The study is ongoing and we are learning a lot about the feasibility of this approach.
Really enjoyed talking to

A-STEM today about mechanisms linking physical activity & bowel cancer risk. And chatting with PGR students afterwards - great bunch. Thanks for having me

The chair sit-to-stand test on

#TheTruthAboutGettingFit
- some people bouncing off the chair some putting full weight on chair.....terrible standardisation
It's too easy to got caught up in writing papers, ethics applications, data analyses etc., and lose sight of why you got involved in research in the first place.
When I run exercise sessions with cancer patients it reminds me of this.
I had a very enjoyable afternoon, good discussions with a great group, thanks for organising

The coastal venue wasn't bad either. I went for a swim afterwards, pity no one was there to witness 🏊♂️
Congratulations 🥳 to

I believe this is a hat-trick...her third consecutive award! Congratulations on sustained excellence.

Really pleased with this article in

First day back at work has finished with two minor revise and resubmits. After 2017 proved to be a year of X manuscript rejections (X was large), I'll take that.

Cant help but think this is just too much committment too soon.
Enjoyed filming how to develop individual load-velocity profiles in the back squat today with

It was a pleasure to sit on the panel for the
