“Sorry lads, can’t make it to Aus - got to bowl 10 overs up the hill on Saturday”
Brilliant stuff from Sean Longstaff, who is currently taking the new ball for Tynemouth. Love the fact he still plays club 🏏
Just dismissed Haydon Mustard, son of Phil, too…
England were ahead for 16 minutes of normal time in the last six games of the tournament. In the knock out rounds? 1 second. They’ve massively underperformed for a team with that level of talent. That’s on the manager & his tactics.
Andrew Strauss's comments re: Sun not being the usual Lord's crowd was telling. The fact that, at £25 a ticket, people usually excluded could get in should be celebrated. After all, this is supposed to be a game for all, not just for the 'haves'. Throwaway remark revealed a lot.
Anyone who can’t see the difference between a county and a franchise, take a look at the Bristolian celebrations in the Hollies. The passion comes out of history and attachment to something at the heart of a community (and cider).
Some good news tonight: Mondli has pulled through a 3rd operation to remove a blood clot on his brain.
He is back in an induced coma but is stable. He has friends by his side, and they are working hard to get his family over too.
Come on young man, we are all with you. 🙏🙏
Somerset's T20 Blast livestream partner Trade Nation has pledged to donate £50 for every six, and £150 for every ball struck out of Taunton during Friday's match against Glamorgan to aid Mondli Khumalo's recovery |
@SamJDalling
Sat down to watch The Hundred because ultimately the cricket is top notch. But when you’ve got two blokes on comms who took what they needed from county cricket but have no respect for it then, nah, not for me
A good pal of mine has just cycled from Surrey to the match today in memory of his son. Eddie and the club have properly looked after him…
The video below is not an easy watch but it tells his story. If any of you can spare a few pennies, Dave would be very grateful 👇
Club cricket is vital - Dan Lawrence nor Jack Leach went to a school with top notch facilities. Leach's school had an astro pitch. But that didn't stop them doing 'ok'.
Craig O for
@SomersetCCC
in F/C cricket since start of 2020:
459 runs @ 32.78 (4 x 50s)
60 wickets at 13.46
12 catches.
Can't do more than that...

Wow. Smeed electric, Banton brilliant, Roussow, well he’s just Rilee isn’t he? Don’t forget the Professor: 5fer for Mr Green. Hats off.

Last year, when starting out, I contacted George to see if he'd be willing to share a few thoughts. Without hesitation he gave me the best part of an hour on Zoom chatting, answering Qs. Nothing 'in it' for him but it helped me greatly. Won't forget it.
The county live streams are growing exponentially, & as a result, so is the audience.
Delighted to be asked to put this together for
@telecricket
- firstly, on the background, and then on how being able doing some comms myself means so much 👇
Been sub par a while. Tried to hold out for end of summer but couldn’t quite make it.
Been a privilege to waffle re Som, Midd & the DPL. Plus cover an int. series in Scotland.
Checked in to finally get the bulimia sorted. Held on too long but here now. Don’t do it my way.
Robbie Savage took his spot in the dugout for the 1st time yesterday as a manager. His love for Macclesfield FC shines through - here is the full-time moment after a fairytale 89th minute winner…
Piece for Guardian Football here 👇
10 years ago I watched Dan Burn and Luke Ayling take Yeovil past Sheffield United and Brentford in the play offs to reach the Championship. Now the club has no assets and is about to become a National South outfit. Very sad.
Lot yesterday about Leach being average. Bloke bowled 50-odd overs in 14 months. Illness, injury and months carrying jumpers - not one word of complaint. His Test career is 11 games old. He has 40 wickets at under 30. It's like some people want these guys to fail...

Before inserting knives, remember the run
@SomersetCCC
had. No1 expected much in T20. But they found their formula, are fine cricketers & will only get better. And they care so much - see SF celebs. This will hurt them greatly & that shouldn't be taken for granted
#wearesomerset
Really enjoyed sitting down with Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Josh Wilson-Esbrand for this.
Title decider for their parent clubs tonight but their minds are focussed on Coventry City's play-off push. And UNO. Lots of UNO. 👇
This was fun. And a really nice moment / thing to debut on.
Hectic weekend so was up at five to prep before a lovely chat with Max, Barry and Nedum about the old soccer thing 👇
There'll be a
@SomersetCCC
Test debut at
@HomeOfCricket
2morrow: one of cricket's loveliest humans, a lady who knows when play will re-start even before the umpires & provider of fine coffee
@Entailleur
will make her scorebox bow. Thoroughly deserved. Go well Polly and enjoy 😊
Unless I've missed something, you'd never know a domestic 50 over comp was going on if you picked up a newspaper today. Other than maybe that Ollie Robinson has been released from the 100. To me, that's sad, really sad.
@MattersCounty
Guardian debut today, although alas not cricket or football. This one was a little more personal / closer to home unfortunately....

Fancy a cricketing bargain and want to help Afghan refugees as they re-start life in England? Look no further. One week left to bid. Please, if you can, share and help spread the word.
Time to talk about Tom Abell?
@SomersetCCC
- having reached 80 - has 1,003 f/c runs since start of BWT at 52.78. He's also got 10 wickets. 3 x 100s and 5 x 50s.
#WeAreSomerset
#VeryAbell
Saddens me that Worcestershire got a wonderful win at Durham, Somerset just chased 400+ & one of the best games ever has taken place at Cheltenham, and yet there is no-one there to pen any colour.
Working on something to right that wrong next year.
#CountyCricket
County Championship is 9 days away & I’ve no where to write about it for. A real shame as I love it, have put thousands of voluntary into it & it helps hugely my sanity.
Unlikely, but if anyone needs words, please do shout.
I’ll dabble with YouTube & see how we get on.
Missed Finals Day & big chance to cover footy today because of MH. Gutted to miss them; head tells me it’s failure. Writing this feels like trying to justify. But somewhere deep down I know I did right; I needed to protect & get better. If in similar boat, please put urself 1st
Human gets ill & spends weeks away from home in isolation. Then spends few weeks in bubble. Human knows he is likely to be away from family for next few months. Human elects not to give up 2 weeks with wife & children for a game of sport. Same "choice" as other humans made before
Brilliant news that
@craigoverton12
will be staying with
@SomersetCCC
- he bowled beautifully against Glamorgan and his pace was up too. Will go down as a West Country legend

For all the Craig O talk, Davey has been outstanding. Most improved county Cricketer?

Flintoff appointed England Lions head coach. I like that. I like that a lot. His passion shines through, and he is - based on Field of Dreams - brilliant with young talents. The kids clearly love him dearly, and joy is, after all, what it is all about.
Lovely opening stint from
@danjadz_
here. The important thing here is that he is OK, so I'm v. pleased that it was the opening question!
I've had the pleasure of Dan's company a little recently, & he is top-drawer. He doesn't need me to tell you to subscribe, but please do 👇
Alas I've nowhere to place county reports this year, so not really written any.
But after a glorious day in the company of
@frankwatson58
,
@MarieKelly96
, John C & Chris O at New Road I felt the urge, during a stroll by the river, to pen my thoughts on Day 1 of Worcs v Surrey👇
This guy was incredible. He left at 5am the next morning for America. Others (**cough**) might have binned it off.
County cricket needs more people like Daniel Sams - he gets it.
The response of the cricket community was as swift, as it was heartfelt. Unity, a collective sense of shock, followed by a collective bout of generosity. It has moved those involved, and those not |

win the

is about
#WeAreSomerset
There are a lot of people fine people at
#WatfordFC
who have worked (& continue to work) tirelessly to be the 'Original Family Club'.
But those at the very top, on the pitch & (some) in the stands are failing them badly.
My take 👇
"600 runs in 15 innings with seven fifty-plus scores tells half the story. For those runs have taken him just 304 balls at a strike rate of 197" |
@SamJDalling
The BBC broadcasts every
#RLC21
game live, using a team of fine commentators. 7 games today - surely whoever runs the website needs to do them justice? Just one RLC link compared to 16 on The Hundred. The 100 has plenty of positives & deserves coverage. But would balance hurt?
Almost a year ago, Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar were killed on their way home in Notts
Both loved their cricket & I'm v. grateful to the pros who have donated shirts for an auction in their memory.
Grateful for any shares, bids, etc.
Lovely to be on
@SomersetCCC
's live stream. Cracking day with
@LuffSophie
&
@HarryEverett_14
. Fab to have Matt Renshaw (worth going back for H's interview) and Tom Banton on. Both spoke brilliantly & it's clear the players love the club. A much needed safe place
#WeAreSomerset
An honour to sit down with
@GiftonNoel
. I could have listened to him all day.
He spoke eloquently on v.difficult topics. Much of what he said is visible in events this week.
His love for

; GT; coaching; giving back; for GT, shone brightly.
Had a cracking day at
@thesilkmen
on Saturday with Robbie Savage...
Not often you get this level of behind-the-scenes access so v.grateful for them letting it happen. 👇
Some DMs sent to friends today sadden me. It's ok to savour one thing & leave it at that. There doesn't have to be comparisons, or digs at others. A beauty being human is we have different pleasures. You can love the
#RLC21

The assumption that English domestic red-ball cricket is subservient to the betterment of the Test side grates on many. Why? Because it is false. |
@SamJDalling
Fantastic to see the
@SomersetCCC
YT channel shortlisted for YouTube channel of the year; well deserved for the team who put so much time, love and expertise into it. Great to play a small part in it during the 2021 season; plenty more to come!
Excellent win for
@SomersetCCC
over Surrey tonight - Will Jacks was once again impressive - he will be an international sooner rather than later - but it was James Hildreth, on his 200th T20 appearance who stole the show...

Loved sitting down with Neil Ruddock yesterday. He was everything I thought he'd be & more...
Thanks to
@jamielorriman
for the brilliant picture, too 👇
Well that was a bit of a whirlwind. It has been a surreal weekend of football for me. From Wrexham's promotion to that. You know, that. 5 up after 22 minutes...yes, that.

What a brilliant couple of days at Trent Bridge. Thrilling cricket.
Lovely to write about Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone today, Tammy Beaumont yesterday and got my first front page byline in the Sunday paper!
This is incredible to see. The effort that Ben, Dan Cooper and the others behind the scenes put in is incredible. They are first there and last to leave, and are doing work that largely wasn't part of their roles 18 months ago. Richly deserve this recognition.
