WHAT?? 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
So basically each team would eliminate 30 or more minor league jobs that pay, at most, $16.8k apiece. $500k total.
This is what we're dealing with here.
Major League Baseball asked for the ability to eliminate hundreds of minor league playing jobs in its latest labor proposal, sources told ESPN. The league would not be allowed to implement the plan until after 2022.
Details, free and unlocked, at ESPN:
Thinking this one will make a bunch of you happy:
Per a source, Marcelo Mayer and Blaze Jordan are being promoted from Salem to Greenville. Drive have a home series starting tomorrow. No word yet on countermoves in Greenville.
If you played ball in New England in the 90s/00s, you threw knuckleballs warming up. It was required. That was because of Tim Wakefield.
If you weren't there at that time, you just can't know what he meant. And by all accounts, 80-grade person.
RIP Wake.
Pro tip: If you follow an account thinking they know what they're taking about that says the Red Sox "are seriously considering Enmanuel Valdez as their SS/2B to start the 2023 season," you're doing it wrong. No chance. The guy literally doesn't even play shortstop.
Gut reaction by many will be Red Sox are selling and/or cutting payroll, but getting a top 20 arm for a 6th/7th inning guy is a terrific bit of business. Schreiber was what, Sox' 5th best reliever?
A former MLB scout texted me as I was writing this to say Sox fleeced KC here.
Something to remember, if you get frustrated with Devers' (relative) struggles this season: He would be the youngest position player on the Salem Red Sox, Boston's High A affiliate. Patience.
@ColeyMick
Of all the players to have ever played the game, I can't think of anyone else who I would have been more likely to guess this happened to. Maybe Rocco Baldelli or something for a different reason, but of course Alex Verdugo became allergic to his tattoos and batting gloves.
Again, you trade John Schreiber for this no matter where you are in the competitive cycle.
No question he will debut in our top 20 and likely higher. He's a guy with helium.
New Red Sox RHP David Sandlin was the Royals 11th rd. pick in 2022 & signed for $397,500. Short strider w/a sturdy, athletic frame. FB was 92-96 T98 last year, but has hit 100 this winter w/20+" of IVB. SL & split both show bat missing potential. Really interesting arm w/upside.
Red Sox up to 13-20.
FWIW, the 2019 World Series Champion Washington Nationals started 14-19. Without the extra wild card. So... it ain't over yet folks.
Wow, per the transaction wire, the Red Sox have signed RHP Carlos Martínez. You know him from his time with St. Louis, he signed in late March with the Giants. He hasn't pitched yet this year and was released on April 28.
Red Sox drafted Ramos in the 5th round in 2010. Reached Portland before leaving as a MLFA after 2016. Spent time with LAD, SFG, and now AZ before making it to the show.
Good for him. That's awesome.
Red Sox RHP Feleipe Franks throwing a pick in his first professional pass attempt. Adrian Phillips doing what he can to help convince him to try the mound rather than the pocket.
Sad news: Per the MiLB transactions, Big Joe Davis has retired.
Big Joe was a fan favorite everywhere he played. He was big in size and personality. He hit the ball damn hard. Best of luck to Joe in whatever is next.

OK, one more time.
What an awful look for MLB. On the broadcast of your championship, they're highlighting that the sideline reporter is raffling off a pair of shoes to support THE EMPLOYEES YOU GROSSLY UNDERPAY AND UNDERSUPPORT.
What the actual F is wrong with these idiots?

Locastro, who is one of the fastest players in MLB (possibly the fastest), tore his ACL in July (on a Verdugo flyball). ESPN/AP recently said he's expected to be ready for opening day. 4th OF type.
Per MiLB transactions, Salem OF Roman Anthony (
#SP60
No. 6) has been promoted to High-A Greenville.
Probably has the most helium of anyone in the system, putting up great batted ball, swing decision, & plate coverage numbers. If he starts elevating the ball, will break out huge.

flew all players and coaches from their team in the winter Venezuelan development program (the "parallel league" or Liga Paralela to the VZ winter league) up to Boston for Games 1 & 2 of the World Series, calling off that week of games.
Per the milb transactions log, the Red Sox added another arm to their IFA class, Dominican lefty Nicolas De La Cruz.
If his bio is correct, at age 17, he is 6-4, 252 lbs.
I need him to make it to the majors like I need to breathe air to live.
For everyone thinking Philadelphia taking Song is slick, it's really not. He will have to stay on the MLB roster for at least 90 days if he ever returns to baseball, even if, for now, they can stash him on the military list.
My hot take: Dick move by DD.
Interesting. Among the usual coaches, scouts, trainers, the Red Sox are hiring dieticians for each affiliate and a roving nutrition coordinator. I love this. Treat your premium investments like premium investments and teach them how to fuel the machine properly.
Teel wasn't connected with the Sox in any mocks, but he also wasn't available at 14 in any of the mocks I saw. Generally considered the top catcher in the class. Worked out that the positional fit lined up with their best player available.
The Red Sox placed four prospects on the BA Top 100: Mayer at 15, Casas 19, Yorke 31, and Duran 91.
Considering the last time Boston had a top 46 prospect (on the preseason list) was 2017 I believe, this marks a solid milestone on the system rebuild.
So by the way, for all those with the smartass "start the duck boats!" replies every time the team makes a non-premier signing or trade, nailing a Renfroe-type signing that sets them up in RF for 3 years is what allows the team to go get the premier guy elsewhere.
Schreiber has had one season in his career in which he was worth more than 0.1 fWAR. Why are people acting like he was the closer or something? This trade is a no-brainer.
The trade of Matt Barnes closes the door on the Red Sox' legendary 2011 draft. 9 players they signed (and 2 they didn't) played in MLB, combining so far for 87.2 bWAR, primarily from Betts, JBJ, Shaw, Barnes, & Noe Ramirez.
Priester is under team control through at least 2029, but if he's optioned for 24 more days, he'd remain under team control for 2030 as well. Something to watch.
(h/t to
@EthanHullihen
on the assist with that)
Feels like the Red Sox liked Romero, didn't think he'd make it to 41, and might be looking to save a little money to use at 41. This draft is deep from here to that pick. Potential to get 2 guys they think are 1st rd talents.
Checks key boxes for them. Hit tool. Makeup.
We can also confirm
@milb_central
report that Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel, our
#2
and
#5
-ranked prospects in the system, are being promoted to Double-A Portland. Will finish season getting a taste of the level they'll start 2024 at.
Fun roster down in Brockton this summer. Yes, those are the sons of Gary Sheffield, David Ortiz, and Manny Ramirez in the same college summer league lineup. Keith Foulke's son Kade is also a pitcher on the team.
Jansen strikes me as upgrading the other catcher spot, not the "RH bat". Wong is catching 3 or 4 games in a row at this point and enters games he doesn't start. I wonder if they're worried about his workload - he's slowed down a bit in July.
SS Marcelo Mayer, no. 2 on the
#SP60
, has been placed on the Salem IL and is undergoing further testing on his wrist sprain. He is apparently in Boston for that testing.
Appears that LHP Brandon Walter is being promoted to Worcester.
#SP60
no. 6 prospect was our Pitcher of the Month in April. After a couple tough starts to start May, will repeat as Pitcher of the Week tomorrow.
Potential Bello/Walter/Winckowski/Seabold/Crawford rotation. Wow.
Casas' first 5 g in AAA off the IL: 2/20, 7 K
The 4 since, incl today: 6/16, 1 2B, 2 HR, 3 K.
If they wait until 8/19, he retains his rookie eligibility for next year. Red Sox can get a draft pick if he finishes in the top 3 in the ROY voting. Would be silly to call up sooner.
So take out this year, it's 12/353. That is a lower AAV than what the Red Sox offered doing same with the two arb years (8/253). And WAY below his counter offer (10/383).
This confirms to me that this is getting done because the market has completely changed.
We've now heard from multiple sources, as we've speculated, that Jay Groome is indeed being promoted to Portland for his next start, which should be Thursday or Friday.
Niko Kavadas is hitting .400/.526/.1.013 in June. 1.539 OPS w/ 2 g left.
Best month I could find from 2008 on is Nick Yorke last August. He hit .414/.500/.816 for a 1.316 OPS. Only >1.300 month I saw.
Kavadas is ~200 points of OPS above any Red Sox MiLB hitter month in 15 yrs.
Blake Swihart is not the reason a fastball goes middle-middle and gets crushed. If you're a MLB starting pitcher and need a catcher binkie, that's your problem. Grow up and learn to execute a game plan.
Presuming the translation is mostly accurate, "The fact that the minor league environment has improved" is what stands out to me.
You get guys to play your sport by giving them reason to do so. He chose the US in part because he'd get paid above the poverty line now.
K, that's your choice and fine by me. I'll lose the one listener to use six characters of my bio to potentialy make members of a marginalized group feel respected and included. Enjoy whatever other podcasts you're listening to!
Nick Yorke has reached base in 65 of his last 66 games. .385/.445/.708 with 14 HR over 311 PA in that time split between Low-A and High-A.
Easily the Offensive POTY in the system this year. It's not really close.
Expect the Red Sox media relations push for Ceddanne Rafaela for Rookie of the Year to reach a fever pitch in September, given that would come with a draft pick.
Honestly, team isn't doing its job if they don't.
I'm trying to figure out the catch of this Springs and Mazza for Hernandez and Sogard deal.
Bloom built up the pitching depth such that these two were completely expendable and he got a legit prospect in return. That's unreal.
Pretty much any fan who's seen a minor league game this year: Yaaaaaas the pitch clock is awesome!
MLB players: Why are you killing the game?
Guys, it's not about you. Sorry.
Red Sox draft picks Mikey Romero (24th overall) and Cutter Coffey (41st overall) are both at tonight's game. Would appear they're in town for physicals, etc.
Might mean nothing, might not:
About an hour and 15 minutes ago, LF Pedro Castellanos got pulled from the Portland game in the top of the 6th.
About half an hour ago, RF Marcus Wilson got pulled from the Worcester game in the bottom of the 5th.
Interesting...

Wow. First Red Sox regular to see winter league action in some time, I think? I think closest is Hanley in the DR in 2016.
Vázquez last played winter ball in 2016.

🚨-Boston Red Sox catcher Christian Vázquez, will make his return tomorrow to

⚾️🇵🇷(Cangrejeros of Santurce) for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
The former World Series champion is active and is expected to be in the lineup.
So, for those still on the fence, Manfred just justified missing the start of the season by saying they couldn't risk entering the season and the players striking.
Think through that for a minute. Keep in mind they imposed the lockout and didn't come to the table for 43 days.
This was retweeted by Cannon himself, which seemingly confirms it.
And yeah this means 2B is open in Greenville so it seems probable that Nick Yorke might get promoted to fill that spot as well.
In case you haven't been paying attention, Jeter Downs is on one. .333/.517/1.048 (yes that's his slugging pct.) in 6 games.
Can't imagine we'd jump him back over Duran based on the AFL alone, but I'm wondering if he could play well enough we'd bump him back up to a 5 grade...
Just learned that Noah Song, who went on the 60-day IL this morning, needs Tommy John surgery. More adversity for right-hander, who after his 2019 debut had a multi-year absence due to his military commitment, followed by a roller-coaster 2023 with the Phillies as a Rule 5 pick.
Confirmed w/ a source that CF/SS Ceddanne Rafaela is being promoted to Portland. .330/.368/.589 in 209 PA w/ typical slick D for High-A Greenville this year. Currently 14th (& rising) on the

@brendan_camp
spotted hints on IG first.
In response to Mayer promotion, seeing a lot of "OK, now do Casas."
Would be silly to call him up before 8/19. If they do, he'll exhaust his rookie eligibility this year with no shot at ROY. Team can get picks for its player winning ROY, so save his eligibility for next year.
Man. That is an insane deal for him. Good for Xander.
Said at the start of the offseason, I liked him best depending on the money. I am glad the Red Sox did not give him this contract.
Pivot to Correa. Get the SS who won't cost picks and is also the best one in the market.
Let me join Stats in a call to stop comparing Rafaela to Betts. The comparison starts and stops at squinting at his stance and seeing a similarity. They are not similar beyond that.
Rafaela is a talented defender who may add some value at the plate. Let him be Ceddanne Rafaela.
If reports are true that he's been offered the job, Craig Breslow would become the first Red Sox head of baseball operations with a SoxProspects player page.
Coffey, at first glance, is very different from Romero. Romero is hit-over-power, might move to 2B if SS doesn't work. Coffey is power-over-hit with a cannon who can also pitch and probably moves to 3B.
Something to consider while noshing at your cookout today: With Sale, Eovaldi, Whitlock, Hill, and, potentially, Wacha all unavailable, the Red Sox will be forced to stoop all the way down to... (checks notes) recalling one of the top 50 prospects in the game.
Nice.
RIP to Homer, the JetBlue Park doggo and unofficial back fields mascot at Fenway South for more than a decade. Was always great to see him running around.
For what it's worth, "they got lucky this guy fell to them" turns into "they're smart enough to take the guy that fell to them unlike the teams in front of them" at some point, right? It's not all dumb luck.
I'm aware you think this because you've sent it like 3 times in the last 5 minutes.
Tell me the AL team that is CLEARLY better than the Red Sox on paper right now.
Also you can QO Paxton if you hang on to him so your premise is kind of nonsense.
Again, confirmed with a team source that Wikelman Gonzalez and Blaze Jordan are being promoted to Portland after the break.
@Hunter_Noll
on this one too.
Interesting to consider even, say, 5 yrs ago, if Roman Anthony is even on anyone's radar.
.228/.376/.316 in Salem doesn't jump off the page.
87% Z-contact, 17% chase, 35.3% hard-hit, 105.2 mph 90th pctle exit velo at age 19 do. If he gets the ball in the air more, watch out.
You can't approach sports with the mindset of "favorites to win the championship or sell." Why play the games then? That's nonsense.
They have one of the best top 6s of any lineup on MLB right now and they're about to add Story. Bullpen is among MLB best. Get a SP and let's go.
Unsurprisingly, the Red Sox have released Danny Santana. Was signed at a point AAA was thin. Played in 7 FCL games ramping up after a susp., but after org acquired a bunch of high minors players in trades + got healthy in MLB, pushing others down. Now no need for him.
I really don't think this would happen, but I wouldn't mind giving Dylan Crews $10.8m and punting on the rest of the draft if that floats him to 14.
Again, it's not going to happen, but... I wouldn't hate it.
