The fact that ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE will make something like 3X as much on its opening weekend ($120m give or take) at the box office as INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE is remarkable. Speaks volumes about how the audience for the first film exploded over the last 4 years. Love to see it.
GODZILLA MINUS ONE ended its U.S. theatrical run today. It was supposed to play for a week. It ran for 2 months and made nearly $57 million domestically, saving the box office during a bad stretch. It's now the 3rd biggest non-English language film ever in the U.S. Tip your cap.
If I asked Hayley Atwell a question and she called me a nasty man, then proceeded to grab my wrist with a smile, I'm certain I would collapse into a pile of useless dust
I was not close with Scott Wampler but I was fortunate to work with him at Fangoria. He was insanely kind to me. A true one of a kind and a man I've never heard anyone speak ill of. I feel lucky to have known him at all. RIP good sir. You will truly be missed.
Just absolutely unreal how many A-list creatives have come and gone for various STAR WARS movies since 2017. I don't know man. Lucasfilm needs to figure this shit out.
I'll have my full chat with
@DevonESawa
up soon but for now...
There's a Final Destination reboot in the works and if the go the Halloween (2018) route and retcon some things, he is game to return!
The director of the Marvels had only directed one feature before.
It was the failed retelling of Candyman.
They’re letting people with barely any experience direct 250 mil dollar films based on their race and gender.
Be as critical of it as you want. It’s all rigged.
Welp. Just got my first offer to edit AI-generated content (reviews specifically) from a company that shall remain nameless. This shit is coming, fellow journalists. I think it's going to be one of two ways: embrace it or find a new line of work. Just disheartening stuff.
Am I saying that ELEMENTAL is going to turn it around and become an unqualified success? No. However, the audience retention suggests Disney really should grit its teeth and bear it with Pixar originals for a while. I break it down for
@slashfilm
3 years ago I interviewed
@Massawyrm
for
@ModernTimesMag
. I had very little legitimate experience. He was truly wonderful to me and, in every interaction I've ever had with him since, he has never been anything but a model human being. He is a class act.
It's here! For the 10th anniversary of STAR WARS DARTH PLAGUEIS, maybe the greatest Star Wars novel ever written, I did a retrospective for
@slashfilm
, complete with insight from none other than author James Luceno! I am so happy this came together.
BOND and MISSION were coming off of very successful runs with large, built in, international audiences. It's not an apples to apples situation AT ALL. Those films were not nearly as dependent on a huge domestic turnout. NO TIME TO DIE did nearly 80% of its business overseas.
No Time to Die opened at 55 mil, Mission Fallout 61 both legged out to 700 mil ww. Don't remember the trades declaring them disappoints when they opened. Also both had massive budgets. Go see
#IndianaJones
everyone. It's a blast. The trades need to stop rooting against films.
I don't have much to add to the Dwayne Johnson discourse. I can say this though...
I was supposed to interview The Rock at SDCC two years ago. He left me hanging. I was crushed. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds was a true gentleman to me on one of the worst days of my career.
#Stuber
absolutely owns. What we saw was a work in progress cut but if what ends up released is somehow better you're all in great shape.
@kumailn
and
@DaveBautista
are the duo we didn't know we needed. Loved it
#SXSW
Now SEATED for
#Air
. This is it! SXSW 2023 comes to a close with Ben Affleck's long awaited return to the director's chair and I am very, very excited. Let's go.

Tonight is the last night I get to spend with Buster and I can't even begin to process that. Made a bed on the living room floor like a kid at a sleepover so I can be with him. I'm going to miss him so much.
Alright everyone it's finally live! For the 10th anniversary of SINISTER, I spoke with
@scottderrickson
,
@Massawyrm
and many others to document its history for
@slashfilm
. I absolutely love this movie and it was an honor to tell the movie's story.
FAST X, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE DEAD RECKONING, INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY. What do they have in common? Sky high budgets, even by franchise blockbuster standards. It's a big issue that seems to be getting worse. I break it down for
@slashfilm
Buster passed away peacefully today. I'm gutted but my friend left this world with belly rubs and warm cement. He grew up outside and over the last few days he was very attracted to the outside. It was oddly poetic. Rest easy big guy. I'll miss you terribly.
Low budget never went away but mid budget is (thankfully) trying to make a comeback. I think we have to see a few of them truly break out before studios start actively investing in more. We need more WRATH OF MAN ($104M BO/$40M budget) or POOR THINGS ($117M BO/$35M Budget).
Overseas,

One of my biggest takeaways from the EVIL DEAD RISE conversation is that people *love* EVIL DEAD (2013) and it's even more beloved now than it was in its day. Maybe the next movie serves as a sequel to both RISE and 2013, best of both worlds, maximum profit?
Freelancing is brutal. If you need to make more money, realistically, you have to hustle to find new gigs on top of your current gigs, even if you're already at "full time." Raises aren't a thing in this world, in my experience. At some point, you just can't take on any more.
How in the ever living fuck did Damar Hamlin's critical injury become about COVID conspiracy theories overnight??? Fuck every single one of you peddling that trash.
IT'S HERE!!!!!!!!!
@FANGORIA
Vol. 2, issue
#18
. This represents the first time I've ever had a byline in a print magazine and I simply couldn't be more thrilled.
I'm not the only one to point this out but the fact that MINIONS THE RISE OF GRU and TOP GUN MAVERICK were both supposed to hit theaters in 2020, waited it out, and have become gigantic, cinema-saving hits in 2022 is pretty fascinating.
I wrote this article a couple days ago but ANYONE BUT YOU is in uncharted territory right now. It has increased its take three weekends straight and even topped the domestic charts on Monday. it's wild. I break it down for
@slashfilm
.
Absolutely relieved to see the budget for EVIL DEAD RISE is pegged at $15 million. Even if it *only* debuts with $15 million domestically, it could still easily profit in theaters with say, $65M worldwide (give or take). Very much an easy ask.
Finished
@petersagal
's The Incomplete Book of Running today. The exact thing I needed, right when I needed it. Inspiring stuff of the most relatable and seemingly possible order. A book that made me feel better when I needed to feel better.
I'm back at
@inversedotcom
! Inspired by the BARBIE vs OPPENHEIMER box office battle that has taken the internet by storm, I take us back in time to 2008 when Christopher Nolan's Batman faced his biggest test: MAMMA MIA!
BARBARIAN is absolutely insane, scary, unpredictable, tense and brilliant. Also funny! Truly awesome stuff and perhaps my favorite movie of the year so far. Go in as blind as possible. But go.
#SDCC
It's not an exaggeration to say that
@slashfilm
saved my career.
@PeterSciretta
has been incredible to me since I got here. I've truly adored doing
@SlashFilmDaily
with him. I will do my part to help keep this site great as Peter moves on. Thanks for everything, friend.
Big news: Today is my last day at
@slashfilm
, a site I created almost 18 years ago. It’s been an amazing run. Thank you to everyone who read the site over the years, listened to the podcast and a big thank you to the writers and editors who helped make it what it is today.
If Viola Davis - perhaps the greatest actor alive - wants to do a zombie movie, every studio in Hollywood should divert all available resources to make that happen
Viola Davis says she “would love to do a zombie movie.”
“I want a ‘Train to Busan.’ I want my version of ‘Train to Busan.’ I want to fight some zombies. That’s what I want to do.”

HAUNTED MANSION opening to less than $25 million domestic on a $150 million budget is B R U T A L. Disney has ***got*** to get this budget stuff sorted out. And yes, releasing this in late July in the most crowded corridor of the year instead of October was not wise. Yikes.
My brother and I took my 63 year old mom to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge for her birthday. She is overwhelmed and cannot stop crying. This is one of those "life is so worth it" moments.
BOTTOMS is absolutely hilarious, unhinged and sort of indescribable. A great time. Also, put Marshawn Lynch in every single movie ever from here on out. Seriously. Every one of em.
#SXSW
My LEGENDS OF THE MONSTERVERSE omnibus finally came! Backed this on Kickstarter ages ago. Couldn’t be happier. It's gorgeous.
@LegendaryComics
did a ridiculously great job with this one. The slipcover, in particular, rules.
I'd like to add that, in a world full of people who think they're funny, Scott Wampler was the funniest person online I've ever encountered. Period. How many people make you belly laugh with a tweet? Honestly. I will never let the term "churning hog" go because of this man.
I was not close with Scott Wampler but I was fortunate to work with him at Fangoria. He was insanely kind to me. A true one of a kind and a man I've never heard anyone speak ill of. I feel lucky to have known him at all. RIP good sir. You will truly be missed.
Roger Corman was 98. He had well over 900 credits to his name. The number of directors, actors, writers, crew members and other filmmakers that learned on his sets? Cinema history flows from Corman's filmography. What an incredible life. RIP, good sir.
The sheer number of high profile box office flops/disappointments 2023 may ultimately produce is downright scary. Something isn't working. Change must come and come fast.
Yes,
@EriktheMovieman
is right and this is why I harp so hard on Hollywood's budget crisis (yes, it's a crisis at this point). Studios *and* theaters desperately need these franchise tentpoles. We get to a bad place very quickly if they keep losing money.
Only just now finding out someone was trying to drag popcorn guy? As a lifelong lover of the theatrical experience, this rules. He's teeing up the ball and setting people up for a good experience. That's awesome.
I (and others) have talked about this a lot recently but I needed to get my thoughts on the record: Hollywood is shooting itself in the foot right now. The box office is left bare until mid-Oct and is simply not sustainable. My thoughts for
@slashfilm
.
I have made it and am suddenly overcome with emotion. Oct 2021 I hurt my hip badly and was on a cane for months. I never thought I'd be the same. It's been a slow climb back. Today? I say fuck you to circumstance ^ run 13 miles. See you on the other side.
Onward.
#AustinMarathon
It simply cannot be overstated just how big of a weekend BARBIE had at the box office. Biggest opening ever for a movie directed by a woman (congrats Greta Gerwig), biggest non-sequel, non-reboot, non-superhero weekend ever.
IT'S HERE!!!! I totally interviewed actual FRAGGLES for
@slashfilm
! This was one of the coolest things I've ever done and, for what it's worth, Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock is delightful. It's streaming now on Apple TV+.
