Before I left on paternity leave, I created this giant, comprehensive guide to getting into and understanding Destiny 2.
It was a ton of work and I’m super proud of it.
I hope it helps you or some friends get into the game/come back before Lightfall
I so sincerely wish people felt more comfortable quitting things they don’t like.
Hate Destiny 2? Can’t believe Blizz wants you to make a new Diablo 4 character every season?
Quit! Just quit. Do something you enjoy!
Because the endless negative discourse is fucking exhausting
People saying Lightfall is the worst Destiny expansion is … hilarious. Not even close
The thing is, the campaign (because of its Strand entanglement) and the story are both a mess. Pretty disappointing.
But the system changes? Neomuna? All the post-campaign shit? Excellent.
This backlash is so weird. Saying it’s too much for a big chunk of players just doesn’t sit right.
First, I believe in you.
Second, If you won’t join a single other player, what content do you even need the class item for? You already have better versions of the same effects.
This is one of those “please, please ignore the negative feedback” moments. This mission is cool and unique because it has to be duo’d. I want to see more stuff like this, not less.
This is one of those “please, please ignore the negative feedback” moments. This mission is cool and unique because it has to be duo’d. I want to see more stuff like this, not less.
Dual Destiny is one of the best missions bungie has ever made, and its a shame that we will probably never get anything like it again due to the unrelenting negative feedback on it just because you cant play it solo
Bungie has absolutely communicated some things very poorly over the years.
But the amount of people who think Destiny 2 is ending with The Final Shape is truly mind blowing.
They could not have been more clear for over TWO YEARS. Destiny is not going away. Jesus Christ.
I've been a part of the Destiny community for 9 years. I've been covering it professionally for 6 of those years. With that said:
The "Bungie only cares about Marathon now, RIP Destiny 2" thing is easily the stupidest community tantrum or theory yet.
Gonna be this guy.
I think this Destiny bug devalues all achievement in the game right now.
Solo flawless dungeon? No problem thanks to Super Gun.
Master raids been giving you trouble for years? Just burn through it with the auto rifle grenade launcher!
Hope they rollback.
I think it’s super rad that people in Destiny challenge themselves to do raid encounters solo.
I also think it shouldn’t be possible and that an entire raid being solo-able is a major flaw in design. And it’s why RoN is so soul-crushingly boring to farm each week.
I asked
@joegoroth
about Lance Reddick's love for Destiny, and how that might affect Zavala going forward.
Then I took what Joe and I talked about and brought it to
@lancereddick
.
Here's Destiny 2's game director and Commander Zavala himself on the Titan Vanguard's future.
Bungie and
@ImKeithDavid
make the best out of an impossible situation with Commander Zavala in The Final Shape.
My latest for Polygon, and my favorite thing I’ve written about Destiny in years.
Please read it and, if you enjoy it, share it.
The Final Shape is extremely good so far. Very high quality, and the devs who worked on it should feel extremely proud. I’m excited to play more.
Server issues are, as always, extremely unfortunate. It harms the experience, and the devs (+ the engineers!) don’t deserve that.
@JustinMcElroy
Everyday, I ask my wife how it’s going for her on PS5. Tuesday, she said “much better than before, it’s only crashed twice today!” and then I watched it crash for a third time before my very eyes.
Unfortunately, the stuff that’s messy with Lightfall is its first impression. Thats something Bungie used to fumble often. Then they fixed it in Witch Queen.
So when the first thing you play feels like going backwards (even if it’s still leagues better than the oldies) feels bad
I have yet to go Flawless in Trials of Osiris in D2.
Anyone out there with a Flawless interested in helping me rectify that?
I’m slightly above average, I think. Went Flawless a few times in Trials of the Nine.
Part of why I love talking to
@joegoroth
about Destiny 2 is that he'll start out by telling me he's bad at golf only to somehow bring it back and land the example perfectly.
Anyway, here's weapon crafting, origin perks, and sunsetting through the lens of a golf metaphor:
Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen treats weapon upgrades like golf clubs. We spoke to
@joegoroth
and
@blakebattle
about the upcoming Destiny expansion’s approach to crafting
This is my living room. You cannot stop me. I've grown more powerful than you could possibly imagine.
Truly this is the most important thing I've ever written. I hope you enjoy it.
No spoilers in here!
I talked to
@joegoroth
and
@blakebattle
about the upcoming Witch Queen campaign, how it paves the way for new players to get into raids, how that potentially impacts future raid bosses, and how sunset locations play into Destiny stories.
Check it out:
New Exotic mission fucking rules. Love that it's timed. Love that it's hard. Love how it's hidden in DD!
Two things I don't like:
1) Tormentors are still inferior boss enemies to Lucent Hive
2) The inevitable discourse about this having a very tight timer is going to age me
Best part of the Diablo stream was hearing
@JPiepiora
tell players that seasons are inflection points, and it’s cool to stop playing and come back later.
As a living games fan (and writer specializing in them) it’s nice to hear a dev say something fans desperately need to hear
I am beyond excited to say today is my first day as a full-time employee
@Polygon
. I've been working here and with some of these incredible people for over four years, when
@TheRiftHerald
first launched.
I've grown since then, all thanks to the people around me.
@zenzland
There’s a big difference between constructive criticism around things that can change and rampaging about core aspects of the game or non-negotiable things.
If you can’t stomach the Destiny 2 Eververse, you should probably just quit. It’s not like weapon balance or wanting maps
@spikelmao
I would tone that back a little bit. I think Destiny can be a ton of fun solo, and those players should be welcome!
However, I think that choosing to be a solo player does mean that you can’t get everything in the game. If you understand that, the more the merrier!
@artnkicks
Paying for an expansion does not entitle you to not have to play the game to get the rewards.
You’re paying for the opportunity to get the class item, not the class item itself.
Episodes look cool!
But hey, when are we getting the two dungeons?
And much more importantly, are we getting a reprised raid like we have every year for three years? Feels like we need to hear something about that regardless of the answer.
Destiny broke its all-time Steam record with Lightfall. Nine years into a franchise. That. Does. Not. Happen.
Is Bungie using the success of Destiny to fund other projects? Of course it is! That's what studios do
I would be genuinely shocked if Destiny isn't still going in 2030
This is a perfect thread:
Great adjustments. (I’d prefer them all day 1 but hey, I said I get it and I still do)
Encouragement that doing all 50 runs is worth it.
Confirmation of generous loot.
And best, a reminder that exclusive, hard to get shit is good for the game!
We’ve got updates on the rollout for the BRAVE arsenal starting April 9, plus some important callouts to highlight just how much loot you’ll be swimming in during Destiny 2: Into the Light.
To be clear. This a media literacy problem for the community.
Like one YouTuber misunderstood when Bungie announced BEYOND LIGHT, and now everyone is fully ignoring devs literally saying "we can't wait for you to see DESTINY 2's next saga"
The misinformation is just wild
Like, when I see someone with a solo flawless emblem, I’d like to be able to think “wow, nice. That’s an accomplishment for Ghosts”
If Bungie doesn’t roll back, all solo flawless emblems that are currently in the game are meaningless. That sucks.
@PaulTassi
It's just such a bizarre move, right? Like. It's a really cool image, and then everyone is like "greetings Guardian." Just really pulls you out of an otherwise cool moment.
I was able to visit Bungie a couple weeks ago and check out The Final Shape. I also got to talk to
@CatamyKX
and Ben Wommack about what I saw.
I put up three previews this morning, each of which focus on a different piece of the expansion.
I’ll thread them here:
This is why people are desperate to know what’s actually next. When Destiny is good, it’s not just great, it’s the best. And the thought of getting The Final Shape and no more expansions is pretty scary.
Really hoping we get some bigger news on Frontiers in the fall!
I do, however, agree that Bungie will attempt to shift the Destiny 2 PvP player base primarily to Marathon for that kind of content once it launches.
But I think that's a good thing, honestly. Those players deserve a PvP game with actual PvP support.
I understand the knee-jerk negative reaction to people hiding streams of day 1s. But I think it misses the point.
This is a competition, for these players especially. The entertainment for us is secondary.
And I think the fact people care that much is good for Destiny
@MeklordPrime
I mean, Diablo 3 patch notes I covered last year — a full decade after it’s release — performed better than news concerning many, many other very popular games.
And that’s for a game that hasn’t had an expansion since 2014.
Diablo 4 seasons will be just fine.
My review for The Witch Queen just went live.
I go into it a lot in the piece, but Destiny has never been better than this. A triumph on Bungie's part.
Destiny is in good hands with
@joegoroth
,
@blakebattle
,
@kingkeoua
and the entire Witch Queen squad.
(Hey everyone here who is worried about being judged by a random player for your speed, skill or comms in this mission: Why don’t you just … group up together? There are so many of you)
Became a dad yesterday.
Pretty great so far, and we’re looking forward to taking her home this afternoon.
This also means that I’m officially on paternity leave! And won’t be back
@Polygon
until the end of May.
Gonna spend a couple months just chillin’ with this baby instead.
Fallout here with a great video that gets at the heart of my own frustration around this Festival of the Lost event. I was gonna finish before Bungie killed the farm. I won't be finishing it now. Bummer.
In this quote, Rian nails why his evolved Luke works so well for me in TLJ.
But even better, and the least shocking thing you’ll read all day: All the angry replies in this thread are from Twitter Blue subscribers.
"I think it disrespects the character of Luke Skywalker by treating him not as a true mythic hero overcoming recurring wounds & flaws, but as a video game character who has achieved a binary, permanent power-up"
— Rian Johnson
#StarWars
Seeing a lot of talk about Final Shape story stuff.
I personally don’t believe we saw enough of it (and we skipped around as well) for me to make a judgement. But I liked what I saw.
We all played the same stuff at Bungie. Others have different opinions, but I wouldn’t panic.
@tomwarren
I’m not sure what purpose the system serves in its current place. Tying it to Guardian Ranks and resetting it every season both makes it frustrating and gives it no meaning.
I did some Wellspring cheesing (easier, faster, no macro, but fewer points) just to get to 7. Annoying
I think at this point the Destiny community should be able to look at content creators who post “this is Bungie’s LAST CHANCE” videos as non-serious hate farmers.
Like there are some things you just can’t say every fucking year and still sound like a serious person, man
The Final Shape is extremely good so far. Very high quality, and the devs who worked on it should feel extremely proud. I’m excited to play more.
Server issues are, as always, extremely unfortunate. It harms the experience, and the devs (+ the engineers!) don’t deserve that.
Today I get to do the thing. I’ve been promoted at Polygon!
I’ll be working with guides more regularly and spending my days recommending games to our readers.
Yes, I’ll still be covering and guiding and reviewing Destiny (and other games!) in this new role.
@Skarrow9
It looks very similar to the Strand leak last year. However, I really don’t feel comfortable with treating it like it’s fact until we get an actual art station link for this as well. Or proof it was ever there.
Also LOL to the people who think it was intentional if it’s real
Any mutuals out there with Destiny 2 day 1 raid experience looking for a crew for Kings Fall/Wrath of the Machine? The Friday timing has left us with three open slots.
The three of us have gotten day 1 emblems from VoG 2 and Vow. Two of us also have DSC and Scourge.
Been talking to a lot of people about this patch because it’s frustrating from a player perspective.
I understand bugs must be squashed, but how and when they’re eliminated can really alter how players perceive the game.
A quick thread 🧵
@PaulTassi
I mean, they can do that as a story approach, but you still need something to point that out. Maybe it's just Zavala saying "there's something different about the air today, Guardian. Do you feel it?"
There has to be some kind of recognition that things have changed.
@wizardelysian
Do you mean … in the past 10 months?
They changed up their entire company focus and future plans in the past 10 months? Since they last spoke heavily about the next saga?
After launching their most financially successful expansion ever just 4 months ago? Seriously?
@jmrivera02
Bi, but, like, I was watching the ending cutscene for Halo 2 at my desk today for reasons and I just started crying? That feels like it has to count for something?
My feedback for Bungie is thus:
Thank you for the timed mission! It kicks ass! Please don’t get scared of timers again because of some vocal players. Some of us really love and miss them.
The ratio of no timer to timer is very wide. I’d love to see it shrink a bit in the future
Setting the undeniable bias I have aside
I've always been pro-timers in difficult exotic missions tbh. I loved both Whisper and Zero Hour because they really tested my ability to clear enemies, burn bosses, and my builds.
@joegoroth
@PaulTassi
It’s always been our policy not to tell y’all what to do, because I don’t know how your game works behind the scenes. I’ve always been comfortable with that.
Sometimes yelling into the ether feels good (I’ve done it!) but it’s important for fans to know they can’t change it all
Thinkin about Satoru Iwata
"I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world."
He & other board members took a 50% paycut when Nintendo was underperforming.
@uwuadi2112
It’s actually bad in this exact scenario, where it being a 2 player only mission is what makes it so cool.
You cannot give a solo option here and maintain the mission
Sometimes getting to work around something you like a lot is really cool.
But sometimes half-playing Destiny to go double check my work for a guide just makes me want to play it more, and that’s an evil few understand.
@tomwarren
While I think there are some vocal people who insist on that, that's not what I'm talking about here
And just having dealt with Destiny fans and the up/down, I would be frankly shocked if the drop-off between Final Shape and whatever expansion comes next is actually significant.
Whoa! Are leaders in the Destiny community who financially benefit from drama dooming over something they don’t have a complete picture of that will only be concerning if it’s still the case three full months from now?
Must be a day that ends in Y.
Do you know how many “make or break” points Destiny has had? Every fall since it’s release.
Games don’t die like this. They die like Anthem, Avengers, and the bevy of other, unfinished Destiny-likes we’ve seen.
Destiny will continue to ebb and flow, like all good living games.
The Witch Queen, set to release later this year, is beginning to look like one last 'make or break' moment for
#Destiny2
, with many fans declaring they're fed up with Bungie's recent choices.
Do you think they can deliver?
@joegoroth
@PaulTassi
I think if you’re still having fun with Destiny — even if you have issues with it (who doesn’t? I’m willing to bet you all have issues with your game!)
But if you have stopped having fun: leave! Come back later. Maybe you’ll rediscover fun. I feel like that’s part of the process
I'm normally a pile of anxiety and doubt over my job, but I think I may have had one of my best weeks ever at Polygon last week.
I put out three, long pieces I am super proud of, all with different editors, AND I took a day off. Feels pretty good.
@keoKe_mrw98
@BillyDorito
And Diablo 3. It’s how ARPGs do seasons because, unlike other loot games, Diablo isn’t designed for infinite progression. It’s built to replay
It’s my final Bungie interview before I take a couple weeks vacation! Here’s my chat with
@joegoroth
, where we talk about modernizing the Vault of Glass raid for Destiny 2!
And yes, I asked about Fatebringer.
@Skarrow9
Yes. Bungie skipped us around, and everyone skipped the same stuff. We’re all missing the same pieces of what happens.
Nobody got the full picture during the experience.
Plus the original announcement said the raid is part of the story AND mission 8 comes after.
Bungie is in a bad spot with the economy of D2. But it's a problem it caused.
By deprecating Legendary Shards and offering nothing, it puts veteran players on the same footing as new players, which is a massive problem in an investment-based game like Destiny.
Fuck this.

As usual, the Titan neutral game looks amazing! It’s why I’ve played the class as my main for so many years. But I’m always excited when I get my Super on other classes. I feel like I just end up holding onto these roaming Titan Supers because they feel so worthless by comparison
