It’s in the way we structure sentences. The way our stories flow. Our structure and twists and what we choose to emphasise when. It might prove to be a huge asset in how it captures people but it also might be an obstacle for others to ‘tune into’ the rhythm of our prose.

I think autism means that my examination and development of characters is gentle and nuanced. The way people change and grow isn’t vastly measurable as an external display at times. Sometimes their entire journey is only huge for THEM, like a shift in how they deal with problems.

I think ADHD means my stories are excitable. Bubbling on their way to ‘get to the good bits’ with well paced shorter chapters and reveals, but not everyone connects with that journey. My characters rarely do ‘small talk’ which helps brevity but some might say lacks texture.

I’m sure this can be frustrating on both sides but for the most part it doesn’t bother me because if my neurodivergent stories are more likely to land with neurodivergent minds, I’ve catered for a group of people who are rarely considered and honestly I think that’s magic.
