**VISION ZERO CHICAGO 2022 WRAPPED***
2022 was heartbreaking. Families lost children with such bright futures. We lost neighbors who were making our city a better place. No stats or analysis can capture the immense loss caused by PREVENTABLE traffic violence. But we need to.. 1/
It's incredible that people have been convinced that they need SUVs and pickup trucks to haul whatever it is they can fit in this cart and push around inside the store
It's that one day a year CDMX opens up nearly 50mi of roads to cyclists, joggers, wheelchair users, skateboarders, kids, seniors, families. Thousands and thousands of people.
Just kidding, it's every Sunday.
Drivers are crashing into fixed objects like buildings, trees, and bus stops all the time.
In fact, in Chicago, they did so over 3,000 times in 2024 so far.
If you include parked cars, drivers crashed into something that wasn't moving at all in 28% of all crashes in 2024.
Every time I take the L I feel so fkn cool.
Every time I bike by a train cutting through a neighborhood I feel so fkn cool.
Every time I hear "doors closing" I feel so fkn cool.
I feel so fkn cool living in a city, I wish we ran more trains so I could feel fkn cool more often.
CDOT: "we are getting conflicted priorities. You want us to slow down cars but speed up transit and we don't know how to do that."
THOSE AREN'T CONFLICTING PRIORITIES. IT'S LITERALLY WHAT WE WANT YOU TO DO ON ALL OF OUR STREETS.
Huge victory for direct action and activism in Chicago today. This is how direct action gets the goods. YOU can transform your city too. Sometimes, all it takes is some high-vis, signs, grit, and persistence.
#chiredlightaction
DuSable Lake Shore Dr averages 7 crashes a day.
Since 2018: 12.6K crashes. 30K ppl involved. 35 killed. 460 severely injured. 3000 injured.
$115M in lost wages, medical expenses, police work, and property damage every year.
That's $317K every single day.
Today will mark the 11th pedestrian death so far this year in Chicago. Take a good hard look at where people are being killed and tell me that fighting for safe streets isn't linked to the fight against systemic racism and redlining and and and....
I took
@metraUPN
from Ogilvie to Ravenswood today for my second inter-Chicago Metra ride ever and oh my god if we had <$3 intercity fares and trains every 20min throughout the day that would be so game changer. I'm officially
@Metra
pilled.
Why is Chicago getting so many protected bike lane projects rn?
A. The pent up construction demand from the concrete shortage that is finally easing up
B. New mayor
Yo,
@ChicagoDOT
and
@IDOT_Illinois
, if y'all are gonna stay so bent on transportation, stop prioritizing car throughput and start prioritizing people throughout.
Folks didn't just walk out onto this intersection, this kind of action happened thanks to the hard work of over 20 marshals, 40 organizers, and 100s of jammers. SEVEN converging bike protests, catching Chicagohenge, a lie-in, and an epic party all-in-one. Truly the best people.
Chicago, we deserve better than the scraps of safe streets infra that
@chicagosmayor
,
@ChicagoDOT
, and alderpeople give us. We deserve a safer and more equitable way to get around our city. We deserve a Bike Grid and we will keep jamming till that happens.
#bikegridnow
Yesterday was my first full day with my Bullitt and my life has been transformed.
Biked 50 miles yesterday carrying all sorts of stuff around town going from Humboldt Park to Lincoln Park to Uptown to Lakeview to Humboldt to the Jam to Northerly Island and back to Humboldt.
Aaannnddd we're back with some tea. This time a driver literally drove onto the sidewalk to get around the diverter. Can confirm, the drivers are NOT okay.
Throwback to having my carbon fiber bike, laptop, mirrorless camera, and all material belongings I used for nearly a year abroad on the Blue line and I didn't get murdered 5 times and robbed 10 times by the people smoking weed on the train. Train safety tips... 🧵
Can someone in the USDOT or Congress tell the Mayor of Chicago that letting CDOT and IDOT move forward with their plans for Lake Shore Drive impacts NATIONAL goals???
USDOT report confirms: highway expansions are climate disasters.
"America cannot meet its goals to decarbonize the transportation sector by switching to EVs without reducing how much Americans drive, according to a new USDOT report sent up to Congress"
Today is the last day for registered public comment on
@ChicagosMayor
's plans for DLSD.
Don't want a highway on our lakefront? Send an email to info
@ndlsd
.org.
"All your options are terrible. Chicago does not want a highway on the lakefront. Invest in transit."
Hit send.
If you think getting a hundred emails from constituents, asking you to endorse a safe streets policy, is "spam" then maybe you're not ready to be alder...
New CTA service expansion just dropped.
An additional 21,000 Chicagoans will be within a half mile from the 9 bus with direct connections to the Metra, the 78 Montrose bus, and the 81 Lawrence bus.
A huge win for Chicago,
@cta
,
@ChicagoDOT
, and
@AldMattMartin
.
Why is it so hard to escape the sounds of cars in Chicago. I just want a quiet plaza where I can read and not have to spend money to sit down. I'll even take some benches on residential streets.
Transit advocates: People should have better alternatives to driving personal vehicles, especially when it comes to trips <3mi, which are the most common kind.
People on Twitter: YOU HATE OLD PEOPLE?? YOU DON'T THINK PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES NEED TO GET GROCERIES?!??
Chicago's 10 worst crashes this year based on economic cost. The comprehensive cost of these ten crashes is $290 MILLION.
DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH SAFE STREETS INFRASTRUCTURE WE COULD BUY WITH THAT MUCH??? 1,200 MILES OF PROTECTED BIKE LANES.
Since 2018-
14,244 crashes. 7 crashes a day.
Out of the 2,128 days since 2018, there has only been 13 days without a crash. Last time was 1/2/2023.
3,558 injured people. 505 incapacitating injuries. 40 people killed.
$506M in economic costs shouldered by society. $86M a year.
those dang bike people have shut down lakeshore drive for their silly protests...if you have any routine or urgent medical care appointments you have them to thank.
I don't know what's happening on i90 but it's probably a different bike group.
Here it is, the worst intersection by ward. Want to know which intersection is the worst in your ward??? Drop your ward number, I'll get to it in the next 21-46 hours.
It's absolutely wild that
@ChicagosMayor
thinks he can just push aside the dissent of 14 Aldermen, 50 State Senators, and 109 State Representatives and pave the way for a wildly unpopular highway project.
IDOT and CDOT will pave over community pushback with a $4B highway project funded by the
@USDOT
.
Our elected officials need to push back against our city and state agencies and stop this project, now! This is a project that
@ChicagosMayor
and
@GovPritzker
must halt.
Ranked Choice voting is being discussed in the Illinois State House tomorrow and witness slips need help!! Currently, opponents beat out proponents 4:1.
Please share!!
All Illinois residents can fill out a witness slip here as proponents:
CTA needs a rewards program. Take 15 trips in one month, you get fares refunded for the month. Take 240 trips a year, you get the whole year refunded. Take 800 trips a year, you get to throw a pie at Dorval Carter.
But also fare capping.
CTA Board approves $2.9B to contractors Walsh-Vinci to build the Red Line Extension after federal gov't doubles down on investment.
President Dorval Carter, wiping away tears, said the project is "long overdue" and has been his "singular focus."
@ChicagoDOT
, your new standard for protected bike lanes in Chicago is crumbling since cars drive all over them. You might want to raise your standards (and your curbs) a bit more.
CDOT does not anticipate more people driving their cars on the LFT during closure of DLSD???? HAS CDOT NEVER SEEN WHAT DRIVERS DO WHEN THERE'S HEAVY TRAFFIC. WHAT A BAD RESPONSE OMFG
They also call DLSD an 'expressway'. Which is illegal to build on the lakefront under the Lakefront Protection Ordinance.
Regardless of how many times CDOT and IDOT say it's got a "boulevard feel"...if it quacks like a duck.
"How many Chicagoans need to tell you they don't want a highway before you bring any amount of bold vision to your plans?" We got the (overwhelmingly critical) public comments IDOT and CDOT received on their Lake Shore Drive redesign plan. Take a look:
"Racist and anti-semitic DePaul student whose family owns several airbnbs and will never feel the impact of the policies he supports doesn't like poor people, this and more 11."
When people complain about people who bike being so tense all the time it's because this type of violence can happen to anyone us at any time. This very well could have been me.
Thinking of all the victims of traffic violence today, especially our most vulnerable Chicagoans.
Tragic news: A driver fatally struck a man, 59, riding a bike last night just before 8 PM in 5100 block of N. Damen in Ravenswood, same block as Winnemac Park bike bath. Motorist stopped at the scene and, as of early this morning, citations were pending.
Of the top 50 individual donors in the Chicago Mayoral race, all 50 donated to Paul Vallas, representing $8.6M in donations.
Of the top 100 individual donors, 98 donated to Paul Vallas, representing $10M in donations.
These 98 donors make up 32% of ALL donations in this race.
Rebuilding Chicago: Ten major projects are planned or underway, representing a total investment of $396 million. Of the projects, three are scheduled to be completed in 2024 and the remaining seven are anticipated to be completed from 2025 through 2030.
Five more feet? I would have been killed. On my other bike? I could have been killed.
I am so exhausted with grappling with the fact that a driver can kill me and flee the scene. I am so exhausted.
the longest ride in april was this 2 hour long ride from Wacker and Wabash to the Chicago Botanic Garden....
the person was not a member so this ebike trip cost them $55.
To my friends and allies who had glass bottles thrown at them, had c*ps harass them, been threatened by strangers on twitter, fought against a city who doesn't seem to care for human life, had loved ones injured or killed by traffic violence - it's okay to cry. I'll cry with you.
I don't think we should have Chicago plow our sidewalks. I think we should have property owners plow the streets. Oh I'm sorry, does that sound ridiculous to you??
Do you hate property taxes? Did you know in 2023, nearly 85% of the Police Pension's revenue will come from property taxes?
That's nearly 50% of all property tax revenue that goes to the City Budget. All going to one pension fund.
"Dickens Greenway is a typical Chicago solution in search of a problem"
2022-2023, the area around Dickens & Stockton saw 30 car crashes with 68 injuries.
Total # of crashes on Dickens from Stockton to Racine in 2 yrs?
117 crashes costing city, ppl, insurers, etc. over $2.5M.
CDOT is getting absolutely bodied by RTA, Aldermen, Constituents, and Advocacy Orgs and yet they are just repeating the same silly talking points that RTA, Aldermen, Constituents, and Advocacy Orgs have called out as flawed. This is a sad sad example of government capacity.
