I transitioned when Posie Parker and Katherine Deves were literally wearing nappies. Whilst they were in 5th grade I was part of the generation of women who, through actions small and large helped create the opportunities they enjoy today, so no, I won't be hearing them 'speak'.
The delightful annual song cycle, ecology and often very confiding nature of these pretty little jewels of the eucalypt canopy make the Spotted Pardalote my favourite bird. This was a very challenging illustration.

Australia is generally an easy going, welcoming and diverse nation and we know when to mind our own business. Posie Parker was ignored when she came to make trouble here because we recognised that she was trying to appropriate feminism to spread hate. It's really that simple.
As an elder of the Australian trans community I am deeply hurt by the Prime Minister's response to Piers Morgan's questioning. Let's make no mistakes here, Albanese's failure to call out the hate which is implicit in the question 'what is a woman'... 🧵

I leave you tonight with this enormous Malla Malla flowering event which I came across once near Blackall in western Queensland. For a 7 km stretch all I could see extending to the horizon was this mass of flowers at the feet of the sparse acacia scrub.

What humans have failed to grasp is that the 3.5 billion year long story of life on earth is littered with millions of extremely successful species which are now extinct because the environment which created and fostered them changed. This is the rule and there are no exceptions.

All this rubbish going on over in the UK and meanwhile, so many trans kids going through our system here with few issues if any and then there's folk like me who transitioned in 1980 at age 21 and have had an amazing life. Anti trans folk are just hateful fascists, nothing else.

Fairly sure Julia Gillard beat her to that title. I would support Sussan Ley working in the role as an assistant in a Kmart self serve checkout area rather than any public office.
Older male Superb Lyrebird excluding a younger male from his territory. Not uncommon this time of year in Royal National Park. I observed this for around 20 minutes. At one point they flew straight over my head and brushed me with their wings.

It's awful coming here every day and seeing 'Rowling' and 'Gender Critical' trending. I transitioned in 1980 and have had a wonderful life full of opportunity. I will stand against bigotry and bullying to my last breath to ensure every trans kid enjoys the same as what I have.
Great news! All the Platypuses which were part of the rewilding program on the Hacking River in Royal National Park have survived the massive flood and remain in their territories. We can reasonably presume that the puggle, which wasn't fitted with a tracker has also survived.
I observed platypuses in Royal NP again today at the same location I regularly find them. This time for 20 minutes with excellent views, often only about 5 metres distant. I will be including platypus encounters on my tours in this location from here on.

It was a misty start in the rainforest this morning. The soundscape was the song tiny gerygones, treecreepers, whistlers, parrots and robins . . . Enticed to begin breeding by the Autumn rains, Superb Lyrebird calls were resounding through the forest. 🧵 1/

I asked 109 thirteen year old students today to raise their hands if they had ever walked in a forest. 11 raised their hands. I asked them to raise their hands if they walked in a forest regularly and there were no hands. I see no grounds for hope.
Among the excellent mammal encounters I had at Barren Ground Nature Reserve today was this splendid Echidna. It's so quaint that these unassuming rock stars of mammalian evolution pass their days so simply: snuffling about in the earth for an invertebrate meal.

There's so much hate here I was going to leave Twitter tonight. If I do, I can't continue to speak up for my people, share and receive stories from nature and sell my bird books 😏 I have two coming out this year: Little Brown Birds and The Bark Foragers. 🧵 1/

Opal is one of our beautiful Sydney Zoo Koalas. Koalas don't sweat, so during this heatwave most of them have been hanging their arms and legs like this. This exposes their palms and soles to the air and, by increasing blood flow to these areas this helps cool them.

That was Stonewall, not Australia. Take care not to misappropriate the place of trans women for your cause. There were no out trans folk in the first Mardi Gras, we were far too oppressed and marginalised (by the law, police and society) to even try that on in Sydney in 1978.
When the Epacris begins to bloom, the male Superb Lyrebirds only mimic their local male repertoire, the female young of the Yellow-throated Scrubwrens have dispersed and Eastern Yellow Robins are chasing off their offspring we know that Autumn is here in Sydney.

I had so many magical encounters surrounded by this stunning rainforest today. I can't remember when I was so deeply touched so many times by the bird song, diversity and behaviour or enjoyed birding more . . .
The local Dharawal people call this month Ngoonungi - Murrai'yunggory. It's when the flying foxes begin to appear in numbers and Waratahs decorate the forests. For me it is when the first Forest Brown and Brown Ringlet butterflies appear and Brown Gerygones start nesting.

I haven't said a lot about the World Athletics ban on trans women in Track and Field but, as a global pioneer for transgender women in the sport, I was devastated at the announcement. As a result I no longer support elite athletics, it's simply a transphobic institution.
@JaneCaro
Thank you Jane. It seems ridiculous for me to even have to say this, I had a tough and confusing time as a child but I transitioned in 1980 when I was 21 (the legal age you could do this at the time). I've had an amazing life full of adventure and opportunity ever since.
Whilst climbing this rainforest hill in Royal NP this morning I was regaled all the way with the haunting beauty of the Bassian Thrush song. I consider this bird to be among Australia's finest singers. You can meet this bird and hear its song here:
was a failure of leadership which throws trans women under a bus and further emboldens the voices of hate who are unashamedly calling for the eradication of transgender women in our society. 👇
Has anyone else noticed that the majority of haters who flock to transphobic posts are men? Even in kindergarten I noted how fiercely boys would gatekeep gender, because they feared their lofty place above girls could be threatened by any deviation from the norms they policed. 1/
There's nothing that isn't gorgeous about a walk in the Sydney bush. To be surrounded by the gorgeous holobiont - an ecology in deep communication - the birds, butterflies, bird song, frog calls, the 'plopping' of berries dropping into the river . . . 🧵 👇

Also, somebody invents a lie like "regenerative grazing" and then dozens of science and researchers have to devote thousands of hours to check those claims and then thousands of others have to spend years pushing back on what becomes entrenched BS.

The scrubwrens around Sydney tell us a fascinating story of how birds of the same foraging guild evolve in form and behaviour so they can live side-by-side without directly competing with each other. Learn more and meet them in my "Bird Watching" course:
Don't complain about rain on the east coast. This is lyrebird country and these birds love it. The water in the soil brings the worms to surface and triggers their breeding season. The Hacking River Valley will be resounding to their song as I type.

Once again, Victoria's LGBTQI+ community and entertainers have come under attack by hate groups - this time out in my neck of the woods, the City of Monash.
And it's more than just placards and yelling - some councillors have received death threats.

We shouldn't be funding private schools and certainly not religious ones which are premised on brainwashing children about supernatural nonsense.
Let's be certain here, the best and latest in science supports the lived experience of transgender people. Gender is a natal aspect of our biology and, being the lens through which we know ourselves, understand our relationships and move in this world is vastly more important ...

For many years now Australia has been building a nation where diversity and inclusion are a centrepiece of our cultural ambitions. Posie Parker can come here and spew her vile rhetoric, but I have every confidence that the vast majority see her for who she is and will reject her.
