A friend in Russia tells me that he voted today. The voting booth wasn't covered, so no privacy. Standing next to the "booth" was a police officer with an assault rifle. And my friend was forced by his employer to send a photo of himself holding his ballot.

I absolutely agree with Yashin's main thesis, that collective blame against Russians for the war is dumb. But I think we ought to stop generalizing the 700,000 Russians who left the country as politically conscious/active. That is simply not the case.

Big eruption of the Shiveluch volcano on Kamchatka's eastern range. It's an active volcano to start, but this was an uncommonly large emission, with nearby villages, like Klyuchi, getting covered in a thick layer of ash.

Visited the recently opened Russian bookstore, Poltory Komnaty, in Istanbul. Very few books available as most were sold in the first two weeks of its operation. Nice place and super nice employees!

Why are we still not calling it Prigozhin's Putsch? It's both conceptually accurate and uses alliteration. "Coup attempt" - bulky "Mutiny" - sounds like we're on a pirate ship "Revolt/rebellion" - positive associations "Insurrection" - bland

Too much of a stretch based on a very specific dispute in a very specific region, the Republic of Tatarstan. No, Russia's regions are not prepared to openly challenge the center (i.e. Moscow). 20+ years of intense centralization, on many fronts, have made this nearly impossible.
