I thought Luca's reaction to Selby's 147 was magic. A proper hug, and genuine warmth and pleasure at seeing a fellow professional achieve something special.
Lots of takeaways for England, but surely that’s the last time Harry Brook is batting down at 5 in white-ball cricket. A complete waste of resources batting behind Moeen and Bairstow. The second best bat in England after Root - should be at 4 in ODIs and 3 in T20s.
#T20WoldCup
If Australia somehow hang on to win the Ashes, it’ll be the biggest miscarriage of justice since OJ Simpson. Scrambled home in Birmingham after Stokes’ mad declaration, cheated at Lord’s, battered in Leeds, battered in Manchester. Now doing a rain dance.

England's First Test Series Win in 39 Years!
In 2000, 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙝𝙖𝙢 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙚 (64*) & Hick (40) made impossible possible when they chased down 176 runs v Pakistan in Karachi.
It was also Pakistan's first defeat in 35 Tests at National Stadium.
Nobody in the history of snooker, or any sport, has been able to freewheel - from absolutely nowhere - and steamroller world-class opponents like Ronnie O'Sullivan can. He couldn't make a 50 break an hour ago and what he's done since is astonishing. A pure genius.
All hail Kyren Wilson, a deserving world champion. The best player across the 17 days, no doubt.
Final thing from me on this year's World Snooker Championship.
In theory, my WC awards - but more general reflections and a few moans, too.
Lovely end to the year, winners at 22/1, 11/1 and 5/1 in the New Year’s Eve match in the Big Bash. 43pts profit
Ends a solid year overall, with various bets on Brisbane Heat in the Bash still running
Thanks, as ever, for reading & not abusing

SF screams of ‘we can’t win so don’t care about the tournament anymore’ from the Australians. So early in the Australian summer, there’s no excuse to not produce a fresh wicket. Genuinely embarrassing, and there should be consequences

Surrey win a thriller, big guns Notts humbled again, Derbyshire make short work of another big run chase and Sam Northeast puts on a batting clinic.
Sky showed highlights of the second Test, again. Disappointing.
So much mutual respect between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry here. Great interview on the BBC and kudos to Rishi Persad for giving these legends the space to talk to each other like that.
Time for the ICC to do more to level up Test cricket. You’ve got the big two, England and West Indies, and then minnows like India and Australia falling miles behind. They really need more help.

A few hard luck stories for him in recent weeks so really pleased
@BenColeyGolf
tipped the 1-2 at
#TheOpen
at 70/1 and 30/1. Not enough space on here to say how good he is, but he's bloody good.
Awesome from John Higgins. So pleased he’s won another big one after a few near misses. John was the first person I interviewed when starting
@SportingLife
. I was so nervous I couldn’t turn the dictaphone on and get my words out. He was class: so friendly and warm. Proper legend.
Regardless of Kyren’s mistakes, another major semi-final for Ronnie O’Sullivan this week is just an incredible effort. Remarkable consistency given his age
I know it's early days and this is probably unfair, but Jamie Smith really does look a very rare talent doesn't he. So much of Pietersen in his game.
Glad they didn't take him to India, but he's here to stay now.
#ENGvSL
Maxwell!
7/1 Man of the Match winner confirmed after a brilliant all-round display from Glenn Maxwell. Slightly aggrieved the top bowler bet didn’t land, given he was by far the best bowler, but we’ll take it.
Nearly 70pts profit in the last three days. Love the Bash.
#BBL13
Lingmerth birdies the last to win. 1pt ew at 200/1. That was a very stressful weekend and makes up for a bit of bad luck last Sunday, and then some. I know prices would’ve been very sensitive at that level but hopefully a few readers got a bet on and paid for a something nice.
Cannot have this at all. Snooker is a drug to Ronnie and sadly, I don’t think he can live without it.
Lucrative exhibitions springing up in China might tempt him away from the main tour for a second, but he ain’t giving it up while he’s dominating it.
‘Maybe he's come to that crossroads in his life, maybe if he wins the eighth World Championship it might be time for him to say, look I've gone out at the top.'
Ken Doherty speculates on ITV that Ronnie O'Sullivan might see a Crucible triumph as the time to retire from snooker.
Brisbane Heat - advised at 9/1 to win the Big Bash and 9/2 to finish in the top 2 (league table) - win the Big Bash with a commanding victory in the final.
The best team in the competition from start to finish and deserving winners.

👏 Simply incredible!
🏏 Rishabh Pant hits an unbeaten 89 as India seal a stunning 2-1 series win over Australia.
✅
@Richard_Mann11
tipped Pant to be the top India series batsman at 20/1 and Marnus Labuschagne top Australia series batsman at 10/3.
The thing about
#TheHundred
– we were promised the best cricket played by the best in the world.Nobody can say that’s the case.
The cricket is largely poor and some of these aren’t the best in England, never mind the world.
Enjoyed some of it, but champions won’t be made here
The Beeb coverage of the snooker is so poor, Hendry and McManus apart. I’m sorry, but it really is. They don’t know half of the players and the analysis just isn’t there. I always use sky cricket as the benchmark - maybe I’m biased - and this offers nothing
The first of two golf previews from
@BenColeyGolf
this week, kicking off with the European Tour.
Ben is currently enjoying a Cream Tea on the south coast, but has three bets picked out.
US PGA preview to come at 5.30.
Some strong stuff from a furious Shaun Murphy last night/this morning.
"...Since turning professional at 15, I have earned the right to call myself a professional snooker player. He hasn't done that. He shouldn't be on the table."
Tears in his eyes, tears in mine. Get in there Alastair Cook! Not having any of this 'he's not pretty to watch, he's limited' bollocks - he's a brilliant, brilliant cricketer and we've been lucky to watch him.

Best story of the week is Leeds’ David Grace reaching the last eight of the Northern Ireland Open. Fell off the tour a couple of years ago, even came on a Sporting Life podcast, but now back on the big stage. Been 3-1 down in almost every match but keeps winning.

Thanks so much for the kind messages re Woakes.
Great to get a big one over the line after a few frustrating near misses of late.
Fingers crossed Cummins can finish the job in the second innings.

Always the temptation to play safe in huge series, and I realise I'm putting myself there to be shot at here
But you've got to stick to your beliefs and I believe Australia are a poor cricket side - across all formats.
Here's my
#Ashes
Antepost preview
Frustrating week on the cricket, but delighted with a big win at the Welsh Open as Gary Wilson lands outright money at 40/1.
Players Championship preview coming once it gets priced up properly.
Thank the Lord - common sense prevails.
12/1 Man of the Match winner on Rohit Sharma and a 3pt win on India to win the Test.
Frustrating that Malan didn't capitalise on a good start, but still a really good week.
#ENGvIND
Massive well done to
@BenColeyGolf
who has bagged a 250/1 winner on the golf this week. Nobody - bar me of course - works harder and the man lives and breathes his sport and the pursuit of big winners. Well deserved.
That man O’Sullivan delivers again!
A big relief to finish the season with back-to-back outright winners – Robertson (10/3) in the Tour Champs and now Ronnie (6/1) in the Worlds.
Consecutive Crucible winners, too, after Selby last year. Lovely jubbly
Got to be chuffed for Will Rhodes. Poorly treated at Yorkshire - in terms of opportunities anyway - so moves to Warwickshire and wins the County Championship as captain. Returns to Headingley this week and makes a brilliant century today.
Strong words from Dawid Malan earlier and I have to agree. No central contract for him, despite being one of the most productive T20 bats in the world for a few years. V good ODI record, too. Crawley gets a full contract, because he plays Test cricket. Leach, too. Not right
Just shy of 70pts profit in the Big Bash, so surely now is the time to plug tomorrow's first Test preview.
It's India v England when Bazball faces a trial by spin.
#BBL13

England can’t win the Ashes with Bairstow as keeper. Taking 40 wickets at Manchester and the Oval will be hard enough, but creating 50 chances, virtually impossible.
#Ashes2023
Matt Brocklebank (Value Bet) is that good layers were protesting against his tipping on the track before the Derby. 25/1 Antepost Derby tip landed, along with 14/1 and 12/1 winners on the day. Genius.

Haven't had a wash today, but I've changed six nappies and written a lengthy preview of Saturday's World Cup card at Meydan.
Someone please read it, for God's sake.
Mark Selby talking about ‘mind games’ and Ronnie being ‘disrespectful’ but he’s happy to play on for three and four snookers when there’s no way the balls will allow him to get them - quite often to slow O’Sullivan down and break up his rhythm. Surely it’s all the same.

A few reflections from this year's World Snooker Championship - good and bad.
What a finish to the season and we have a worthy world champion in Luca Brecel.
Thanks for the reads, likes and retweets. It's much appreciated.

descending into farce now. Claire Balding cuts off the most deserving award winner of the night in his victory speech while, Ronnie not shortlisted and Lewis Hamilton wouldn't make the dress code for Wiggle.
New Year’s Eve in the Big Bash was magic, so hoping for more of the same on New Year’s Day.
Both matches covered here, with some big-priced darts.

Australia too strong on the big day, typically. India too timid in a final, typically.
Touched on it in my preview, but India messing about with pitches for the SF revealed insecurities that needn't have been there.
And in the end, it cost them.

Bazball is great and all that, but professional sportspeople and teams have to have some level of discipline. We've seen very little from England today.

Big Bash final preview: Brisbane Heat face final frontier
Have thoroughly enjoyed this year’s edition, regardless of the result tomorrow
Thanks to anyone who has read the previews
Older snooker fans are often too quick to harp back to the 80s, but my generation has been so lucky to grow up in O’Sullivan’s era. What a privilege. You can have your 80s and I’ll take Ronnie every day of the week.
#snooker
Little wonder Ashwin has the record he has. Only plays at home, bowling spin on these pitches. I could take 500 Test wickets bowling underarm spin in India.
#INDvENG
Ponting spot on. To not bowl England’s greatest ever cricketer, England’s best bowler, with the game on the line was hard to understand. Back your best players.

I pray that this is the end of the celebrity obsession. No love island star or public figures (god I hate that term) getting us through this crisis, just heroic NHS staff, wagon drivers, shop workers, carers. Real people with real jobs serving the country. Hope we don’t forget.
Looks like Harry Brook’s poor IPL has counted against him for World Cup selection. But I can’t believe he isn’t a batter batsman than Jason Roy at present.

James Anderson now third in the ICC Test bowling rankings. At 40 years of age. Ridiculous. These pitches in Pakistan probably won’t help, but not inconceivable that he’s number one at some point in the next 12 months. At his age, that is just insane.
#PAKvENG
English cricket fans don't appreciate Jos Buttler anywhere near enough. Probably the best white-ball batsman of all time - or v close - and he gets slated for being less successful in Test cricket. His Test batting average only slightly lower than Brad Haddin's, too.
#IPL2022
England's spinners: 10-0-54-4
England's seamers: 10-0-122-0
Remarkably, Moeen and Livingstone didn't bowl their full quota.
Incredibly bad from England - the captain must have been asleep.

If we're picking Div 2 top order bats for England now, you could make a strong case for Will Rhodes. Run machine. Would be a handy signing for Yorkshire...
If true, a temporary England selection panel effectively retiring their greatest ever Test cricketer - when he's still bowling brilliantly and the rest of the team is crap - is quite something.
James Anderson would be right to ask, what happened to selecting on performance?
