Her name was Yvonne Dunlop. She was only 26 when she was burned to death by Thomas McElwee. Her nine year old son narrowly escaped with his life and three children were robbed of their mother. Today we should be remembering them rather a sectarian killer.
Proud to join the family, friends & comrades of Thomas McElwee 🇮🇪to mark his 42nd anniversary. “Remember, Thomas was only 23 years old when he died. Despite the adversities that he faced, he was filled with hope & aspiration; ambitious for himself, this community, & the future.”

Jeffrey Donaldson grew up in a rural working class family of eight children, had a secondary rather than grammar education, and saw three members of his family murdered in the troubles. I suspect Danny's background is far more privileged.

When Fiachra's father oversaw the IRA in Derry it strapped bombs to human beings and gave the victims a choice between being a suicide bomber or having their family executed.
@JamieBrysonCPNI We will not treat our unionist neighbours the way we have been treated in the past. Govern every single citizen equally.

I really don't understand how a united Ireland is viable if an overwhelming majority of nationalists believe there was no alternative to a terrorist campaign against their unionist neighbours. No unionist could feel safe in that state.
EXCLUSIVE: 7 in 10 nationalists agree with Michelle O’Neill that there was 'no alternative' to the IRA campaign. A @lucidtalk poll finds 69% believe 'violent resistance to British rule during the Troubles' was the only option - just 25% disagree.

Danny Lennon's contribution to Irish 'freedom' was killing three children. This atrocity led to the formation of the Peace People, which Sinn Féin and the IRA organised thugs to attack.
Our thoughts are with the family of Óglach Danny Lennon who was killed on active Service on the 10th August 1976.

Sinn Féin won't be investing an extra billion into health, the Brits will. The only reason this pledge is on the table is because of the financial security offered by the Union.
Privileged to attend the Health and Social Care awards, to recognise the amazing work and thank our health workers. Sinn Féin will invest an extra £1 billion in health to reduce waiting lists, recruit more GPs and nurses, and further support cancer and mental health services.

Made in Belfast, and worth adding Northern Ireland's contribution to Ukraine's defence is only possible because we're part of a major military power.
🚨Britain is set to send the world’s most advanced anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine, the Defence Secretary has announced. Designed to destroy fighter jets and helicopters, Starstreak is the fastest short-range surface-to-air missile developed 🧵👇.

I see the people who routinely tortured their prisoners and dumped their bodies in unmarked graves are gaslighting about brutality again.
There has been big reaction to my tweet on the 1983 H Block escape. There are opposing views of legacy events. I am proud of being part of the biggest escape in British penal history,in wake of the British systemic brutality of prisoners and deaths of 10 comrades on Hunger Strike.

The Good Friday Agreement says *nothing* about the single market. The term doesn't appear in the Agreement. A bit of honesty about what it says would go a long way rather than grubby politicians misusing it further their own agendas.
It’s not rocket science. You can’t stick to the Good Friday agreement (endorsed by a referendum, with 71% in favour) *and* take NI out of the single market (not endorsed by a referendum). Time to stop dancing to the tune of 100 democracy deniers on a WhatsApp group… #Frost.

Hello, I'm Nichola Mallon and you may remember me for standing down in North Belfast to turn the contest into a sectarian headcount between Sinn Féin and the DUP.
SDLP deputy leader @NicholaMallon tells conference election is again being reduced to a "sectarian headcount". Accuses DUP of irrational positions, mood swings & reacting to "loudest loyalist voice on social media". "Vote Jeffrey's party and you'll get Jamie Bryson politics."

Remembering Martin McCaughey and Dessie Grew on their 32nd anniversary. RIP. “Remember Martin McCaughey and remember Dessie Grew. and look at them straight in the face and say into yourself, you didn’t beat them, you’ll never beat us.”. ⁃ Martin McGuinness

For a bit of context, Alex Murphy was responsible for lynching two soldiers he took prisoner in West Belfast. What Tim's highlighted here is the humanity with which he and Murphy were treated by the RUC compared to the brutality with which the IRA treated its prisoners.
This is IRA volunteer Alex Murphy being led across the carpark in Castlereagh in 1988. Like many republicans, I too, made that walk, handcuffed and knowing for sure you’re going to prison. Cops making jokes, sneering. Some experience. To those who made it, my respect.

Imagine the howls of outrage we'd be hearing from Michelle O'Neill, Colum Eastwood and Naomi Long if Boris Johnson had made a speech threatening to cut off vaccine supplies. And yet when the EU threatens to cut off life saving medicines we don't hear a peep!.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has threatened to block vaccine exports to the UK and other countries with markedly higher rollouts of coronavirus jabs. Read more:

McElwee 'resisted' by burning a young Protestant mother to death in one of the most horrific sectarian murders of the troubles. Nobody should be celebrating the killers of young women.
“In a few months my body might be no more, but like Bobby, Francis, Patsy and Raymond I will not be dead. So long as one Irishman resists the occupation of our country and fights for the establishment of a democratic and socialist republic”- Óglach Tom McElwee

Food shortages are a direct consequence of Alliance insisting we remain in the European single market rather than the UK one. Farry loudly opposed the Internal Markets Bill which would have mitigated the worst of this and ensured food could be supplied to NI with fewer problems.
We opposed Brexit and warned of these and other consequences. Anyone who can’t recognise that a hard Brexit would entail some form of special arrangement for NI is delusional. We are doing all we can to soften the impact of the Protocol. Maybe the backstop wasn’t so bad afterall?.

Michelle O'Neill could demonstrate her commitment to being a First Minister for all by commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bloody Friday. She could call upon Gerry Adams, the IRA commander responsible, to finally cooperate with an enquiry.
As a First Minister for all, I want to deliver for everyone. I am determined to form an Executive, to support workers and families through the rising cost-of-living, to fix our health service, and ensure a better future for all. Speaking on @CNN from Washington D.C.

Imagine leading the only mainstream party in Ireland that won't condemn sectarian murder and thinking you're a cause of unity rather than division.
A century of partition has cost us dearly. That past was defined by those who divide. The future is for those of us who unite. The opportunity and rewards of Irish unity belong to all of us who call our beautiful island home #IrishUnity #Saoirse

This is fundamentally dishonest. The Ombudsman's report didn't find any evidence of collusion. Indeed, the report highlights the police had no prior knowledge of the murders and acted promptly and thoroughly to bring those responsible to justice.
The Police Ombudsman’s report shows again the shocking levels of collusion & failure within the RUC and state agencies here in murder. Though the legacy of our past is difficult, we must always support families & victims in their fight for truth & justice. Thinking of them today

Agreed, it's unacceptable. Meanwhile, would anyone like to guess the percentage of Protestants that work in the school where Chris is principal? CCMS is a much bigger employer than Shorts with a far greater problem with underrepresentation in its workforce.

I see Matthew O'Toole's the latest supposedly moderate nationalist who is more angry at unionists for calling out sectarian comments than he is with Richard Neal for making them.

James Nesbitt and Susan McKay aren't 'moderate unionists' - they're nationalists. However, it does speak volumes about Joe Brolly's mindset that he forever defines people by the community they are born into rather than the political identity they adopt.
The reason the @duponline TUV and LCC attack sensible, moderate unionists (James Nesbitt, Susan McKay, Doug Beattie etc) progressive academics & journalists is because they have, as Susan puts it, “an existential dread of democracy.” Better for NI to burn than share power.

Unionism needs to improve its discourse but nationalism is hardly hosting Plato's symposium. In the last year Higgins refused to attend a cross-community church service, O'Neill paid tribute to sectarian killers, and Harvey sneers at unionists about their 'precious union'.

Adams, of course, isn't telling the truth. The 1920 Government of Ireland Act provided a peaceful route to a united Ireland, as did the 1949 Ireland Act. We even had a border poll in 1973 at the height of the troubles which SF rejected because they knew they'd lose.
Mr Adams says this is the first generation to have the option of peacefully attaining a United Ireland. "We won that on the back of struggle," he said. "We won that by staying true to democratic and republican objectives." . FULL STORY:.

What really underscores the fact the hunger strikers were criminals is that their leader in the Maze, Bik McFarlane, was responsible for this nakedly sectarian massacre. Ultimately Bobby Sands and the 9 others died in an attempt to sanitise atrocities like this.
On this day in 1975, five people were killed or fatally injured in a Provisional IRA attack on the Bayardo Bar in Belfast. The youngest was 17-year-old Linda Boyle. The IRA member who led the attack sang the closing song at Sinn Féin's virtual St. Patrick's Day concert in 2021.

No verbal warning was given to. *checks notes*. the IRA unit that had minutes previously opened fire on a police station with a mounted heavy machine gun.

Perhaps Simon, as Chairman of the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee, would like to explain why it's 'necessary' that butter in a sandwich needs an EU vet's certificate?.
No business likes rules and regulations but they are necessary. M&S has form on this and is in danger of becoming the “boy who cried wolf”. At one time I believe they wanted us to join the Euro? So, enough ‘scares’ thanks very much.

I see Kevin Boyle, at forty years of age, has finally discovered that terrorism is in actual fact a bad thing.
Inside the US Capitol today: 2 explosives devices placed inside, a woman shot & killed and terrorists storming Congress preventing a peaceful transition of power after a free & fair election. Republicans with the PA House GOP leading have made the USA an int’l embarrassment.

I think it says a lot about where Irish republicanism is when a song written to protest the murder of children is an 'insult'.
The contradiction with Zombie is that for years the D4 press foisted rugby on the whole country as *the* national sport, yet now the IRFU and an IT journo want to foist a song on us that is not inclusive and is an insult to republicans across Ireland and nationalists in the North.

Interesting shift from Alliance, previously they argued they wanted to put constitutional politics aside to prioritise bread and butter issues. Now Farry wants the Irish unity debate to dominate our politics.
Stephen Farry at yesterday's Ireland's Future event stated that "Unionists cannot stay out of the Unity debate indefinitely". Those forums are not debates and surely S Farry can understand why Unionism doesn't want to join a discussion aimed at bringing about its own destruction.

50.9% of Irish voters opted for pro-partition parties in 1918. Of the 124 Sinn Féin TDs in the first Dáil, 64 of them voted to endorse partition. The Irish people, north and south, reaffirmed that partition was legitimate with the 1998 referendum on the Good Friday Agreement.
