I spend most of my time lost in thought. Or not thought, but daydreams. Not just daytime though, also at night. Dusk included.
Wait what were we talking about?
I had never kicked anyone out of church, until last Saturday.
The Pride festival is across the street from our church, & we proudly opened up our building as a way to support the LGBTQIA+ community. It was a fun day with a parade, music, food, and celebrations of love.

Our underfunded snow removal services can't get our underfunded roads clear enough to drive the underfunded busses to the underfunded schools. If only there were some common thread to all this...

@masonmennenga
I'm gobsmacked by how frequently I encounter people who BOTH:
(A) Think that the Bible is the literal word of God upon which the fate of their eternal soul depends,
AND
(B) Haven't read it.
I could understand one or the other. But both?!‽‽

I admit that I'm not the most budget-astute person, but did AK just bump the salaries of the governor & legislators by OMG% while also telling our students to give up hoping for luxuries like books and roofs?

The forecast calls for snowfall the depth of a giraffe in heels. School has been canceled for a decade and Anchorage has sold all of its snowplows to fund construction of a dome for a pets pickleball league.

But until they can speak without hate, they will not be welcome in my church, because my church is a place to escape hate. It’s a place to escape shame. It’s a place to find sanctuary.

NEW IDEA: What if we all collectively chipped in, each according to their ability (maybe as a percentage of income and wealth) and with that pooled money we provided services that benefit the public, such as childcare and snowplows?

The phrase “All Are Welcome" is intended as hospitality, but it’s sometimes the opposite. If a wife had a restraining order against her abusive husband, a church shouldn’t allow him to come sit next to her on Sunday morning:

Today "C." came into my office and said "I wanted to let you know because you've been my pastor for 5 years... As of tomorrow I will have a home, and be off of the streets, thanks to the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness."

An environment that is hospital to him is inhospitable to her. Similarly, when those boys showed up at our church with the intent of shaming my beloved gay siblings, our community had a choice to make: Welcome one group or the other.

It seems like the sub was destroyed because they ignored regulations. Alaskans survived the 2018 earthquake because builders followed regulations. Be VERY skeptical of those who push for deregulation.

We were guided by the theology that a church’s proper place is to stand in between the bigots who throw stones and their targets. God will always be found standing with and for the oppressed.

I'm proud to share that I've been added to the board of directors of Covenant House Alaska. I and everyone at First Presbyterian look forward to working together lift young people out of homelessness, "with absolute respect and unconditional love."

But Pride is a place to be free from the shame that so-called christians continuously spew. Bringing that message to Pride is nothing less than an act of hate.

So I shut them up &shut them down, raised my voice &loomed large over them. I told them to leave & stayed in their faces til they were past the edge of our property, resisting the urge to bark at them like a guard dog until I reached the length of my chain & wagged back to church.

I joined many of Alaska's clergypeople in signing this letter. It's time for the legislature to demonstrate that ethics matter.
Thank you Rev. Andy Bartel.
@GovDunleavy
This bill combined with the removal of protections against discrimination seem like an intentional assault on the LGBTQ community. Intentional or not, you need to correct it.

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood! Juneteenth Anchorage Citywide Celebration parking is available for free at First Presbyterian Church at 616 West 10th. Our bathrooms are also open.
Also, if you ask really nicely, I will tell you a joke that’s probably terrible.

Tomorrow's sermon explains the theological, spiritual, &scriptural reasons we're LGBTQ-affirming: Not DESPITE our faith but BECAUSE of it. ... So ppl can be equipped to respond to anti-gay rhetoric with love&kindness, & w/ steadfast biblical & academic rigor. Y'all are invited.

HELP REQUESTED: Anchorage, here's a chance to be part of something beautiful! Anchorage nurse Holly Fisk is donating her kidney to save her neighbor's life. As you can imagine, surgery of this nature takes a lot of time and effort, so to support her we need help in 2 ways:

It goes against my grain to kick people out of church. If those boys ever want to come speak to me, I’d be happy to join them in a conversation with no innocent bystanders.

Here they were at Pride, with the same combative attitude and lies that call love a sin and call eternal hell an act of a loving god. I was there at chruch with people who are gay…

Then three three kids - well, they were probably in their 20s, but kids to me - approached the church, shoulder to shoulder like soldiers in closed-ranks. I had seen them before, at the Planned Parenthood rally when they condemned me to hell.

People have been asking me what I think about the "Jesus Gets Us" commercials. Here are some thoughts. On the surface it seems like a friendly and simple message. But with ALL things religious and ALL professional advertising, you should dig deeper.

At the PP rally they spoke only to me, at a time when I was alone. I listened patiently then, and replied with biblically-sound positions. It didn’t work, but I was willing to give them a conversation.

They had been coached, and were ready with prepared quotes and rehearsed verses from only those parts of the bible that could be forced without consent into their talking points.

People who would overhear these angry children call orientation an abomination; who would once again be forced to hear the sickening drivel of a pre-written essay about a god who coincidentally shared the same bigotry as its followers.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
And my attitude is spiteful
I looked outside and my heart dropped
Make it stop make it stop make it stop
It seems as if the weather hates us
And the plows are on hiatus
The streets are just a slushy slop
Make it stop make it stop make it stop

A guy was trolling me about my church's support of BLM & LGBTQIA+ ppl. I offered him a conversation so he called the church. I was calm & cited scripture & science. He yelled "YOU SOUND LIKE AN EFFEMINATE BABY! SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP YOU BABY! BABY!!"
So I guess it was a draw?

Sad to learn that Vic Fischer has died.
He was the last surviving delegate to the 1955 convention that wrote Alaska’s Constitution.
Born in Berlin in 1924. Raised in Germany & Russia. Moved to AK at 26.
Served in the territorial legislature and state Senate.

If any LGBTQIA+ people are reading this, please know that hateful homophobes don't speak for Jesus. God made gay people, loves gay people, and celebrates and affirms the love of gay people. If you want to find an affirming church near you, I can help you do that.

If parents can opt kids out of sex ed, and out of history that they don't like, and out of the big bang and evolution… Can I opt my kid out of math because it makes everyone sad and she’ll never use it?

There was a very important discussion/vote about the mayor's plan for sheltering homeless people. He didn't show up.
Winter will be here in no time, and people will die because there is no plan.

Selective Localism is weird. Pro-constitutional-convention ads decry outside money, but they also tend to be pro-Tshibaka& ignore her outside fundraising. "Lifelong Alaskan" is a selling point yet we elect Dan Sullivan. Localism is doubly bad if you only apply it against opponents

Happy pride month y'all. If anyone tries to use the bible to justify abuse & exclusion of LGBTQIA+ people, let me know and I will fight them. Nonviolently of course because that's part of my gig but I will bludgeon them with my exegetical acuity & acumen.

One recent snowy morning I arrived at church & was sad to have to wake a homeless man and ask him to move elsewhere, because we had school children coming in. We chatted and I gave him some food. He’s not the cause of homelessness, he’s the victim of it. His name is Albert.

As a parent I should get to approve every thought & emotion each teacher has before they have them. I want veto power over their hopes & dreams. I should pick their outfits. I demand absolute control & so does every other parent. TEACHERS, YOU BELONG TO US. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.
Revised bill would require Alaska parents to approve students’ classes, textbooks and lessons, the Alaska Beacon's James Brooks (
