In Ohio, parents must submit standardized test results or have a portfolio reviewed by a teacher. This, according to authorities, was the reason K. was taking the online test. Ohio’s homeschool law put K. in contact with a mandatory reporter—and that contact saved her life.

I have a story to tell you. Actually, two stories. The stories of Emani and K. This is a story of the difference a state's homeschooling laws can make in the life of an abused child.

The Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE) is a group of child advocates focused on homeschooling. We are interested in this cause because we were ourselves homeschooled and we care deeply about making homeschooled children’s lives better.

Authorities following up on the tip found that K. was severely underweight and malnourished, and was being kept locked in a filthy trailer, monitored by a security camera. Unlike Emani, K. was rescued. Unlike Emani, K. will have the chance to grow up.

Today is #DayOfTheHomeschooledChild . Over 1.7 million children are homeschooled in the U.S. But state homeschool laws have almost no measures to make sure homeschooled children are safe and educated. Here's what that policy failure looks like (🧵):

In September, a teacher administering an online test noticed that K. was having trouble paying attention and asked if anything was wrong. K. reported that she was hungry and that she was fed only rice once a day. Deeply worried, the teacher reported her concerns to a tipline.

Because Emani was homeschooled, there were no teachers to notice that she was hungry. Emani’s parents used homeschooling to isolate her, and she paid the ultimate price. Emani will never have the chance to grow up. Emani is gone.
