It is with a heavy heart we have to announce that avain flu has been confirmed in northern gannets on RSPB Grassholm, the 3rd largest colony in the world for this species. We will keep you updated as we learn more. See blog link for details

What a day! Assistant Warden Alys Perry came up trumps with this Bay-breasted Warbler, a 1st for Wales and a 2nd (?) for Britain. No landings tomorrow due to forecast but extra boats have been laid on for Saturday. Contact 01437 721721 to enquire

I've been working with Manx shearwaters for many years but nothing beats that feeling of lifting a nest box lid and finding an old friend safely back and wearing an electronic device you last saw 14,000 miles ago! Welcome home EZ05183
We were treated to the sight of around 200 common dolphins spread across St Brides Bay yesterday morning with a few venturing into Ramsey Sound
@RSPBCymru
@Natures_Voice
Just 12 years ago this scene would not have been witnessed on Ramsey. Rat eradication in 2000 led to storm petrels breeding for the first time in 2008. Now they are fighting over nest sites (sound up for the song)

Big thank you all our volunteers (too many to name) and Thousand Islands Expeditions for allowing our Bay-breasted Warbler twitch to pass off smoothly. And of course to the 160 very well behaved folk who came to see it! The bird also behaved impeccably and everyone left happy!
Do not disturb! Grey seal pupping season is here. A reminder to kayakers not to land on any of our beaches from now on. Even if no pups are present yet, pregnant cows will be in attendance. You are welcome to access the harbour wall via the landing steps.
🚨 WE ARE HIRING! 🚨

The first confirmed breeding record of cuckoo on Ramsey since 1973! It had been a good spring for sightings of this declining species with at least 3 birds logged including a long staying singing male. The baffled looking meadow pipit host has done a fine job 👍
Just a few notes about tomorrow:
1. Thousand Islands Expeditions are the only boat company licenced to land
2. There are no facilities for private landings
3. There is no access to the island via our beaches. We are in peak seal pupping season and disturbance is a SSSI offence
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER update: Bird still present at 16:30 today. If you are coming to Ramsey tomorrow, please only turn up at St Justinians if you are PRE-BOOKED on a boat with Thousand Islands. Please park in the dedicated field car park above the lifeboat station. Thanks
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER still present on Ramsey today. As predicted no chance of boats today due to sea conditions. Tomorrow still looks ok though and we are laying on another extra boat at 1230....please phone 01437 721721 to book (bird will be looked for at first light tomorrow)
Manx shearwater nest box check. Both these chicks weigh a healthy 583g (adults weigh 400-420). The one on the right is 61 days old and needs to shed a fair few grams before fledging around 72 days (the fluff ball is 44 days old)
A flock of 38 jays this morning is an island record for this scarce visitor - here's 6 of them! My woodland friends tell me its been a poor acorn year which sees them extending their range in search of food

Notice to all water users: grey seal pupping season is upon us in Pembrokeshire. Please can you all (re) familiarise yourselves with the

Annual end of season trip to Grassholm to cut free gannets entangled in fishing line. A second successive ‘good’ year with only 11 fledglings and 3 adults needing freeing. Thank you to Thousand Island Expeditions
@RamseyIslandFun
for once again providing free boat hire
'1 million tonnes of fishing related plastic ends up in the world's oceans every year'...we see the direct effects of this on

. We'll soon be heading out for our annual efforts to free entangled birds

Grassholm update: No obvious signs of bird flu on the island yet this year but the impact of last year's significant outbreak is obvious. Large gaps in the colony which was to be expected. Full survey to come in June with results to follow
#AvianInfluenza
With all the doom and gloom surrounding seabirds at the moment here's a glimmer of light - the results of our latest Manx shearwater census are in and its good news! Up 30% to 6,225 pairs....see blog for details
Manx shearwaters nearly became extinct on Ramsey following the introduction of non native invasive brown rats. Following an eradication project in 1999 the Manxie population recovered, and in 2022 we counted 6,225 occupied burrows
#WildIsles
Exciting news coming from Mallorca. First Balearic shearwater egg laid in one of the nest boxes we installed in 2016! This will make monitoring and research of this Critically Endangered seabird easier and cause less disturbance. Thanks
@BirdLife_Malta
for design advice
Managed to get out to Grassholm today for our annual trip to cut free birds entangled in fishing gear. Always strange to see this 36,000 pair colony largely empty. Good news is only 14 needed freeing, lowest total on record and continues the trend of recent years
My last day with

Still no sign of

on Grassholm this year. Look hard and you'll see a newly hatched chick. The bird in front was turning its egg. Normal behaviour so far 🤞
If you live on the coast in Pembrokeshire, particularly campsites with lit toilet blocks, it would be really helpful if you could minimise lighting at night this month. A lot of fledgling Manx shearwaters were grounded last night in the current murky conditions 1/2

Happy St Davids Day and a big welcome to our new Assistant Warden, Alys Perry

The Bay-breasted warbler has reappeared. There will be no boat landings to the island until Saturday at the earliest due to the weather conditions & forecast. We will post updates of its presence daily. Please call Thousand Islands on 01437721721 to enquiry.
Back on Ramsey for the 2021 season and a male wheatear was waiting for us! Pretty sure it’s the earliest on record but not unpacked laptop yet to check!
@PembsBirds
42 Manx shearwater fledglings brought in by the public this week were successfully released yesterday evening as the storms eased. Nearly 100 to date. Thank you all and a great demonstration of partnership between local charities and businesses
Here they come! After 51 days in that egg shell the first Manx shearwater chicks are hatching in the study burrows. A further 70 days of nightly feeds by the adults to follow (2 feeds in one night if lucky)then its next stop Argentina! Now that’s special!
#seabirds
The pups are popping out. 29 grey seal pups born on our study beaches as of today. This compares to 21 on this date last year and 26 in 2019. We should now see a steep rise in coming weeks with numbers peaking around the 3rd week of September.
Last nest box Manx shearwater chick standing, weighing a healthy 502g at 73 days old. Not bad from first time parents, one of which was itself ringed as a fledgling here in 2014 in a burrow less than 200m away.
Next stop Argentina..

Filmed during today’s seal pup monitoring round. I just missed this pup being born and the new mother was in no mood to let her neighbour get too close

For the first time in over 25 years of RSPB ownership the island hasn't opened to the public on 1st April (or at least tried to open, weather doesn't always play ball!) - here are a few photos to hopefully keep spirits up in the meantime

A phone isn't the best way to capture wildlife pics on our 100m high cliffs but the guillemots were packed on ledges in their 1000's this morning and over 150 grey seals jostled on Porth Lleuog
#YearoftheSea

The grey seal pupping season may just be starting on the Isle of May but out west we thought we were done. However 10 born in the last 4 days suggests otherwise, including this little one born last night on the harbour beach

Checking the Manxie nest boxes for signs of activity and a few birds were home by day including a male bird who is one of our original stalwarts having bred in box 15 since 2016 . In that time he’s crossed the Atlantic 11 times, a distance totalling (roughly!) 77,000 miles!
Incredible hirundine migration today. Minimum 8,000 swallows headed south through the morning and more unusually a huge house martin movement with 2,500 in under 3 hours (200 sand martins too).Some of the house martins paused to refuel at the pond
🚨Applications for our long term volunteer post on Ramsey for 2022 are OPEN🚨
You will be an integral part of the island team and, if previous post holders are anything to go by, it should set you up well for a career in conservation
See link for info
Since I last saw this geolocator tracking device it has travelled approx 28,800 miles! 2 return trips to Argentina for it's Manx shearwater owner. Looking forward to analysing it's migration tracks
Spectacular skies today as the Pembrokeshire Dangler served up menacing meaty showers interspersed with brilliant sunshine in a biting NW wind

The chough are busy keeping their energy levels up in these bitingly cold easterly winds. This is one of the 'harbour pair' feeding near one of our ponds today

logged our first razorbill ‘jumpling’ of the year yesterday. They spend minimal time on the cliffs to reduce predation risk, completing the fledging process out at sea with the male bird. Good luck little ones!
No let up in chough numbers. This flock of 50 was part of at least 62 on the island today. Also our first pied flycatchers of the year with 2 in the garden this afternoon
@PembsBirds
We have Chough fledglings!!
Six of our Chough pairs have now successfully fledged young. The adults are now busily feeding their very demanding fledglings.

It's been a while but we're back! Ramsey will be open to the public again from Sunday May 2nd. For more info and details how to book see the blog link below. Hope to see you soon!
Manx shearwater nest box check today and we have our first chick, 51 days after the egg was laid. Weighing 42g today it will hopefully reach close to 650g by mid August before fledging at around 450g in early September
Back out on Ramsey for the season. Luckily the crane was in good working order! A month of cleaning and maintenance lies ahead before we open on 1st April!
I've been waiting for a nice morning to share some real time

sightings but it's yet another drab and windy morning out there and the garden in empty! So here's a red kite that flew over the house a few mornings ago, watching me closely!
