The airbag is perhaps the most popular car safety feature. It is also the most mis-sold and misunderstood (as seen in a recent FIR against a car maker). Here is a thread that I hope will provide more clarity on airbag functioning/effectiveness (1/n)

@QuantumIndian3 @streetfrontier Then I assume the median opening will be closed to ensure the flyover usage and the signal will also be taken down I guess to ensure continuous flow, leaving no footpath or crossing. Good luck to the pedestrians...

@streetfrontier Oh, you meant it at the median opening then? I thought it was mid block looking at the black line location. Yes the crossing at the signal (both sides) with a traffic island acting as a curb extension is better.

@dabir @motordave2 @blrcitytraffic @DriveSmart_IN @TopDriverIndia @ReduceRoadRisks @Jabalpursafety @dhans4all @skr77s Not technically realistic (can see him push the baby through the roof :)), but a good message. Hopefully parents won't argue by saying I will hold the child tightly.

@motordave2 @DriveSmart_IN This is what a tyre 'burst' looks like, which is an explosive event as the air comes out randomly. Rim damages (LF wheel here) can be caused during roll as well. My guess: Driver overshot the curve and steered left & right in quick successions in panic causing the roll.

The slipping of the tyre from the rim is caused after a collision with a curb-like object. This is the same mistake police officers do when they start blaming tyre bursts for crashes.

@Annaashu2 Yes, but it's the NHAI engineers who give a green light to the contractor by comparing the site with the DPR. NHAI isn't innocent in this

@DriveSmart_IN @iam_Sudip Yes, the extra lane is to either accommodate further expansions or create an emergency stopping area for longer bridges. Either way, the lane marking is incorrect and lack of signage is an @NHAI_Official speciality. Reminds of the Cyrus Mistry crash.

@manuganji IMO, road safety or any safety for that matter should never be left to behaviour or human nature. There should always be checks in place. Also with the way things are headed, a metal cage won't be enough either.

@SquatAsian I don't have the exact GPS, but another article mentions the location as L&T gate Hazira Highway Surat. Please share the redesign once you are done. @NHAI_Official can learn a thing or two.

@motordave2 @DriveSmart_IN @dabir @RCBengaluru @skr77s @MORTHIndia @nitin_gadkari @ChristinMP_ Thought so. Thankfully the occupants survived even after getting crushed between 2 vehicles. Thanks for sharing.

@DriveSmart_IN @TuchIndia @ReduceRoadRisks Gap acceptance is an interesting concept as it changes from vehicle to vehicle type and country to country. E.g. Indian two wheeler riders take gaps as low as 3s!

@motordave2 @DriveSmart_IN @MORTHIndia @nitin_gadkari @ChristinMP_ @NHAI_Official Looks like the Noida expressway where the speed limit is 100kph. IIRC the highway is elevated with barricading. I wonder why the pedestrian was there.

@theyawninchihua I recently met some members of the Bharat NCAP team. They have already started working on the Bharat NCAP 2.0 for which they are considering Indian crash data as they too have doubts on the representativeness of the current NCAP protocol for India. Let's hope 2.0 is better.

@theyawninchihua Glad to see IIHS continue to push crash test boundaries. Many people don't realise that the current NCAP tests barely touch the surface when it comes to real world crashes, especially in India.
