PSA - Be kind to your Ag Retail people. Often the news we are delivering is out of our control and trust me - we would rather have it any other way. Your one phone with us, is often our 10th on the same subject with different farmers. We are all trying to do our best in

I used to watch my Grandpa test grain at the kitchen table every fall & wait over baited breath for the number to decide if they could "go" or not - now every time I do a moisture test I think of him

Dear Agronomists & Consultants, building plans that are not feasible, not possible with their equipment, agronomically unsound & that are designed to confuse farmers, to show your "value" is an abuse of power. They trust us

If I have learned anything since joining the ag industry its that; it is being available almost all the time, not "regular" hours; it's a community, not a group of customers; and it's a lifestyle, not a job. Most of all, it's rewarding as hell.

PSA - you don't need to be a "farm kid" to make a great agriculture professional. It's our job in ag to show all kids that being involved in this industry isn't an exclusive club

When I started in ag, I thought it was strange that ag events left time to "network" (usually over beer). 10 years into my career & I have come to realize the stronger your network, the better agronomist you can be. I guess those beers do pay off!

PSA today - check the seed weight on your bags before you start seeding canola - MOST BAGS NO LONGER WEIGH 50LBS - and therefore 1 bag will not seed out 10ac at 5lbs/ac. Your ROI will thank me in Sept

What fantastic work done by Team Alberta! Testing completed on wetlands for over 150 chemistries persistence in Alberta to ensure pesticides are being used responsibly. Not 1 exceeded the acceptable level set by the PMRA.

We joke at retail about this time of year, the farmers "getting the itch" as soon as the weather starts to warm up - I have to admit as an agronomist I get that same "itch" in April

Agronomy Tip 101: If a product is $1000 cheaper than its competitor, chances are they are not the same thing. 1# of nutrient in OXIDE form is not the same as 1# of nutrient in SULPHATE form. If it looks too good to be true it probably is

In my opinion, some of the strongest in the workforce come out of the 4H program (farming or non farming). The volume of "public funding" being cut from all types of agricultural services & programs is staggering

Wild oats emerging above the canopy in your fields? Check out this plant 8 total tillers, 7 with dead growing points & 1 that made a head, classic sub-lethal dose symptoms. Was it caused by: low water volume, wild oat stage at application or resistance?

"Must be really slowing down around there at this time of year" - Soil sampling started, plots still coming off, rotation planning for 2024, canola early booking deadlines, spreading fall fertilizer & granular herbicide... different but I wouldn't exactly say slow
Here is your annual PSA that spraying above 28 degrees Celsius (I like to use 25 as my "this is your last tank" cutoff) can reduce efficiency of your $30+/ac tank mix, and I want your money well spent.

One of safest, most tested and HIGHLY SCRUTINIZED products on the market - I believe this product, after 40 years, is still, one of the most critical tools we have in agriculture
Don't forget to pull plants. We were called out for a hail damage estimate and low & behold we found clubroot in the entrance. This helps determine which clubroot source we will deploy next year

Lots of questions on yellowing crops this week. "CROP RESPONSE" or "FLASH" can occur if your herbicide had a high surfactant load & good growing conditions AT THE SAME TIME. Plants that Metabolize herbicide while growing fast may experience excess stress that causes yellowing!

After some hail, I am getting loads of questions on "rescue treatments" - here's my unpopular philosophy at flower/heading, <20% damage will likely benefit from an app of foliar phos & biostimulant within 3 days of damage, greater damage likely cannot be "rescued"
