Please pray for me!
I am beginning a two-week placement at St Giles-in-Reading as part of my discernment to the priesthood.
I will give updates throughout my time there!
‘Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.’
Jeremiah 22:3
Holy Trinity, Reading is one of the most incredible urban parishes with regard to its architecture and installations.
A Queen Anne era pulpit; a rood screen from an RC Cathedral; an altar from Nashdom; and an enormous quantity of vestments.
Almighty God, you gave your servant St. Charles boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the
And that I may go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness…
High Mass for the Feast of S. Blaise according to the English Missal.
@EnglishMissal
‘Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.’
Canon F3-
‘In every church and chapel there shall be provided, for the celebration of Holy Communion, a chalice for the wine and a paten or other vessel for the bread, of gold, silver, or other suitable metal.’
On a recent trip to Reading, I was gifted a silver-plated thurible by a Vicar. This morning, after much grumbling and elbow-grease, I have restored it to a former glory.
It is yet another loving addition to my small collection of ecclesiastical tat that I hope to grow!
Excellent Caroline items at The Duke of Portland’s collection:
The Chalice used at Charles’ last Holy Communion before his martyrdom.
The pearl earring he wore during his execution.
A lovely print made in the 18th century.
Whilst not wishing to enter the fray with regard to the discourse around Benediction and TEC, I will just note how interesting the sea change has been with regard to Benediction in the last 150 years.
Even Charles Gore, Principal of Pusey House, refused to do it!
Pray for the repose of the soul of Sir John Betjeman, who died this day in 1984.
A staunch highchurchman and advocate of traditional architecture, he was a Poet Laureate and all around jolly sound chap.
His documentaries are superb and still on the BBC. What a man!
Just arrived! But, in classic Richard style, I’ve turned up half an hour before Mass begins and the Church is currently locked 😂
But I’m glad to be here after a long trek from the East :)
Please pray for me!

Two years ago, upon the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II died. Today, we pray for the repose of her soul, that God in his grace and mercy may bring her to Him.
God bless Her Majesty, and God save the King!
Here I am before the pulpit in which ‘National Apostasy’ was preached!
'As for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way.’ 1 Samuel 12:23
“And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.”- Revelation to S. John the Divine, 12:1
Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis!
Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and come together, all ye that love her; rejoice for joy, all ye that have mourned: that ye may be glad, and be satisfied with the breasts of your consolation.
I was glad when they unto me: We will go into the house of the LORD.
Happy Mothering Sunday!
Sweet Sacrament divine,
hid in thine earthly home,
lo, round thy lowly shrine,
with suppliant hearts we come;
Jesus, to thee our voice we raise
in songs of love and heartfelt praise:
sweet Sacrament divine.
Could you imagine if a company was entirely unable to appoint its directors…
This is an entirely unacceptable state of affairs! But alas, it’s a growing pattern.

@burdenofthem
showed me a video from thr Coronation of HM Queen (1953) when she curtseyed at the name of Jesus during the Creed.
Very sound
Alleluia! Christ is risen!
He is risen, indeed. Alleluia!
By thine Agony and bloody Sweat; by thy Cross and Passion; by thy precious Death and Burial; by thy glorious Resurrection and Ascension; and by the coming of the Holy Ghost,
Good Lord, deliver us.
My last Sunday on placement!
It’s been such a lovely time; I’m really grateful for all who have welcomed me to Reading over this fortnight.
Thanks especially to Fr David Harris, Fr Sebastian Way and Fr Desmond Banister for looking after me!
Two days ago, my father was in Canterbury for the consecration of the new Bishop of Birmingham and took the opportunity to return to the archives he used for his DPhil. He took this wonderful photo of the Howley Library. It’s rather redolent of ‘Camera Bouveriana’ at Pusey House!
Blessed Lord, in whose sight the death of thy saints is precious; We magnify thy name for the abundant grace bestowed upon our martyred Bishops. Grant us, we beseech thee, continual increase of strength, by thy perpetual and life giving spirit. Amen.
Ss.Latimer and Ridley, ora!!
Today was my day off from placement duties, so I took a day trip to Oxford (my university home).
Lovely to see everyone and to have dinner with
@gracemim
I am once again reminding people: celibacy for priests in the Western Roman Catholic Church is a discipline not a doctrine.
Eastern Roman Catholic priests are free to marry; Ordinariate Priests are free to maintain their marriages when they are received from Anglicanism.
Bible: the husband of one wife
Rome: CELIBATE!!! NEVER MARRY!!!
1 Timothy 4:3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.
Do any Anglo-Catholic churches still use this prayer for the monarch of the day after the blessing?
(Found in an ‘Order of Mass and Benediction booklet from the late 1950s- published by The Society of SS. Peter and Paul)
WE beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts; that, as we have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an angel, so by his cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Fabulously old fashioned hymns this morning:
O God, our help in ages past
Ye servants of God, your master proclaim
Eternal Father, strong to save
Let all mortal flesh keep silence
Thy kingdom come! On bended knee
Pray for His Majesty, our Sovereign Lord, King Charles as he undergoes treatment. May God preserve him in health and wealth, long to live.
God save the King!
@nassaujuan
I am aware of a not an inconsequential number of significant theologians who have moved from Oxon and Cantab simply because the US Unis would:
1. Pay more
2. Give more time for research
3. Give them research assistants
4. More job security
@WatchfulRev
Or perhaps it’s a genuine care for the continuation of the non-partisan elements of the government of this country, no longer being caught in the dialectical maelstrom of ideology?
Almighty God, who hast instructed thy holy Church with the heavenly doctrine of thy Evangelist Saint Mark; Give us grace, that being not like children carried away with every blast of vain doctrine, we may be established in the truth of thy Holy Gospel, through Christ our Lord.
Happy Patronal festival from St Peter’s!!
‘And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.’
Philippians 2:8
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
We proclaim today that God died for us on the Cross; that we might be forgiven and that the serpent’s head be crushed.
Interesting omissions at the Novus Ordo in today's Responsorial Psalm...
(note that verse 7 is also omitted in the psalter of the post-Vatican II Liturgy of the Hours)
Thank you to all those who prayed for me!
I can say that I’ve received a distinction in my Pre-Lims; I couldn’t be happier (or more relieved) with my results.
