THREAD 1: MPH concentrations
I will start with the various concentrations (area of specialization) in MPH and link it with the job prospects after graduation. You must choose one when applying to MPH programs.
I worked on 2 published articles in sickle cell disease this year. I found out about the ongoing therapy, involving gene editing, that’ll change the face of sickle cell disease for many years to come. Remarkable news!!!!
Hello all,
Application season for Fall 2021 admission has started this month.
Requirements for admissions have changed a lot within the last few months. I will enumerate them here:

Nurses, Physiotherapists & Pharmacists!!!
Some of you have reached out to me, asking to detail the process of transitioning to the US.
I am working on these threads, with the help of friends that have passed through this route.
I had my own share of Police/SARS brutality in Nigeria. I was almost shot at/killed 6 years ago. Most of them have no restraint whatsoever and believe they can get away with it. It’s time to

GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test essential for graduate admissions in the US. Despite being waived by some programs, it still remains a major element of SOPHAS application and admission into PH programs.
I would like to share some points for self evaluation of your personal statement before you send it out to someone for revisions/editing. Ensure that it answers the following questions:

I scheduled a patient for CS due to previous CS and big baby. She didn't show up. Was rushed to the hospital 2 days after. They tried vaginal birth with misoprostol. Uterus gave way. She passed on with the baby. One of my horrible days ever.
Okay, let's get to business. I could not continue the threads on public health admissions and others due to my commitments over the past few weeks. I will continue to guide and assist those interested in PH programs in the US for the next 1 year.
GRE requirements for MPH programs
GRE is a big problem!
I can not write it
I am weak at calculations
It is too expensive
I do not have money for GRE
There is no time to prepare for it
Please, check this out!!!

Are there MPH programs that accept application without WES?
Yes, there are MPH programs that accept applications without WES and GRE.
Some of these programs are also able waive application fees as well.
Two years ago, I decided to read more about the Biafra war. I am happy I did. I could understand why the pains and anger lasts till today. We need to say it loud to prevent such from happening again. May their souls Rest In Peace!
#BiafraRemembranceDay
I understand how it feels when you read through the admission requirements of some universities and you see GRE. It has discouraged many from pursuing their graduate programs. Preparation requires at least 2 -3 months of studying.

THREAD 2:
Who can apply to MPH programs
When to apply
How to apply
Where to apply
Public health programs are not just meant for specific groups of people. Anyone can apply to these programs irrespective of their backgrounds.
Still on GRE
In the past few years, many have been advocating for the removal of GRE as a requirements for graduate admissions in the US. Few years ago, a coalition of organizations, academicians, administrators and researchers was formed
SOPHAS and Public health admission
I received lots of questions on sophas based on the thread I shared two days ago. Here, I will review the SOPHAS application process.

Always great seeing you around with that smile😂 I was one of your residents and you did inspire me. Keep up the good works!!!!
THREAD 5: FUNDING FOR PH PROGRAMS
There are funding opportunities for public health programs across the United States. However, universities invest more on their Ph.Ds than MPH.
Ph.D students can function in many capacities than MPH students.

How do I use less resources and get a good score? How do I combine GRE preparation with my work schedule and still do well? What score makes my application competitive?
I will share this information in the next thread.
It’s official. I was recognized for my outstanding performance and overall excellence in research & teaching as an Assistant Professor of Public Health and awarded tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. The process of tenure is rigorous and fraught with several highs and
I sat for my GRE 6 years ago, while working in the hospital. I was busy but had to create time for it. I got a score that improved my application for the MPH. Three years after, I used the same GRE score for my PhD application. I was funded for both programs.

We have to start from somewhere, Chief. I was surprised at the comments supporting the woman too. Our culture plus religion have created a mental picture of how someone should look/dress and any deviation from is tagged as indecent. This is not right.
I will share the general information here for everyone. If there are other details that might need a private platform or chat
We might create a private platform for those interested.
All information shared will be FREE.
Please stay tuned!!!

Sometimes, you close your eyes and still see their faces, even after 7 years. It keeps you motivated to prevent the next death. But what would you do when the resources to save them aren’t provided/ available?
@DrOlufunmilayo
One of my painful experiences while practising in Nigeria was losing women who objected CS to death. All of them were educated - bankers, nurse. They had the necessary information at their disposal but they believed that "Hebrew women" do not deliver via CS.
@DrOlufunmilayo
I think Religion played a huge part in this mess. People that delivered via CS are viewed as weak women. You hear the word " Hebrew women". It is difficult to liberate people from this because religious leaders are viewed as higher than doctors.
During the epidemic, I requested for transcripts from two universities in the US. I paid $21 for the two. The pdf copies were sent to my email the following day. How long do we continue in this mess?
These Nigerian universities especially public universities always requesting bribe before giving out transcripts needs to stop. People missing out on opportunities because of transcript delay.
So, biostatistics and epidemiologists are some of the areas abandoned by people because it involves lots of calculations and the ability to use one or more statistical softwares. The COVID-19 pandemic will also open up many opportunities in these 2.
For medical doctors going into MPH, I know the intent of thy heart😆. Residency is still possible after MPH but depends on a number of factors too, which I can't explain here. I will devote another section to that.
@ojayfemi
In the US, the guideline by the American Cancer Society recommends colonoscopy screening from age 50 ( Blacks from age 45). However, colorectal cancer incidence has risen significantly in people less than 50. It’s high time they reviewed this recommendation.

My advise: If you are not a medical graduate and want to go far in public health fields in the US or globally,
- choose any of the above concentration for your MPH
- focus on a particular research area
- Continue into the PhD
- Doors will eventually open
@olumuyiwaayo
@oluwatobiloba90
MCB/Biology/Biomedical sciences are well funded. They are all fantastic programs as well. PhD admission is possible after BSc with funding.

It’s easier to be patriotic where things are working well. I couldn’t be patriotic where I was owed for a salary of 900k and was been harassed by a landlord for 250k rent. The disgrace was unbearable. “And you call yourself a doctor”
@QueenEfexii
I think we have the notion that following the residency route makes you fulfilled as a doctor. And those in residency see themselves as being superior to those who aren’t. The truth is that we are all doctors, choose your own path and excel in it. Simple!!!
Most universities offer these concentrations:
- Biostatistics
- Epidemiology
- Health Policy & Management*
(or Health Service Administration)
* HPM is referred to as HSM by most programs
Summary
- Is it competitive- YES
- Is it possible to get admitted with funding? YES
- What do I need? Be competitive!!!
- You can do it. Do not let anyone discourage you.
I am ready to guide through the process too, if interested.......
Doctorate degree in the US elevates you to the few and therefore makes it easier for companies/institutions to file for you. Just 4.5% of the US population have Ph.D compared to 21% with masters.
Here is the list of PH programs and their rankings:
if you are in doubt, send an email to the admission officer of the school and you should get your apply within hours to few days.
Reading this thread almost brought tears to my eyes. We still don’t know much about COVID-19 but the lasting effects on survivors will be huge. Please stay safe!!!
I’m 28 years old. I caught Covid and have spent half my waking hours lying down for the last 3 months, and can’t walk more than 5 minutes without getting extremely out of breath.
Take caution but you’re not bloody immune if you’re young.
I know what many of you feel about Health Service Administration (or Health Policy & Mgt). I know you believed that it would help you manage an hospital better. Yes, it is true but universities' curriculum are geared towards the American health system.
CHECK THIS OUT!!!

Please be strong! You’re doing an amazing job, especially seeing the time and stress that young faculty members put into it. You’re shining light and you will light up the public health world very soon. 🙌🏽
I have faced so much rejection in my life, two major ones this month alone...i've just cried my eyes out. What I am learning through rejection is strength. Strength to be okay with not having my way, strength to appreciate where God has placed me, and strength to slow down...
@ojayfemi
Yes sir!!! The influence of politics in science has created distorted information to the masses. Its so unfortunate. The progress made in the last century to health - cures for infectious dz, medications, vaccinations- all came through research.
It is true that some people got things figured out earlier in life. Many of us take each day as it comes. Some won’t even find a life purpose but will settle for something that brings food to the table. There’s no template for living.
I liked a tweet just now abiut people who haven't found their life purpose and are taking each day as it comes. I remember some people who like to push a certain narrative down people's throat just because they have "made" it.
Please don't bring people down cos you are up there
Do you still have excuses?
All you have to do now is:
- Get a notebook
- Note down the requirements of the schools
- Asterisks the ones that have waived GRE
- Send an email to those programs without information on GRE.

Also,
-Make it personal and authentic. Tell your own story
- Start writing early and make changes as time goes

Besides, the competition is high in this concentration. First, it is usually the number one concentration for Americans. So, you have to compete with them. Second, you also have to compete with people with MBAs.
1. Credentials
You need to evaluate your degree and transcripts, preferably via WES. . This process usually takes months, so start early. Go to the website, register and start now.
@Okpala_IU
has done a wonderful job on that.
Few universities also offer the following concentrations:
- Women's Health,
- Global Health,
- Community Health,
- Social & Behavioral Health,
- Environmental Health
- And others......
However, few universities offer general MPH without concentrations.
An essential tool for my research is ILLiad - an inter-library access to articles worldwide.Literature search found related articles in Norway, Canada, Italy. I sent my request via the University's ILLiad. The articles delivered to my laptop within 48 hrs.
You can prepare on your own. I prepared during my housejob in Lagos and passed well. if you want, I can talk about resources that helped me score well in GRE. You should know that Americans write GRE for admission as well.
